Smile Is the sealant for coasters......

Is the sealant for coasters able to be used to create hot pads/trivets? Will it with stand the heat from something hot being placed on it. Also, does it have a strong smell to it when applied. Reason I'm asking the second question is I have asthma and my brother has agreed to apply it if necessary.

I made several 6X6 hot pads this weekend. Only problem is the ink will wipe off if the tile gets wet. They look wonderful but aren't "practical" if they can't be used. That is why I'm curious if anyone has used the sealant for this purpose. Thanks for any all suggestions!

Default Hot Pad Sealant

I have always used a clear Krylon spray sealant for my coasters. I don't know why that wouldn't work for trivits. I put hot coffee on my coasters and haven't had a problem. HTH.

I just looked on my can of Krylon Crystal Clear sealer & it does not say anything about not using on something that would be in contact with heat. I would imagine any sealer would work. Just make sure you give it the alotted amount of drying time (and then some). I think it would be fine to use with trivets.

I used the Krylon and it IS heat resistant. But yes, if you have asthma, have your brother do it....the smell is overwhelming.

For hot trivets I use stazon black let it dry overnight then color in with sharpies or chalks and blender pen then bake real high for half and hour and NO spray as I have ruined two pans...even with "heat resistant" sealer.

At what temp do you bake? And then when cool, do you apply the sealer? I am new to this and i want as many details as i can get! Also, about sealer... how many coats do you spray on?
Thanks!
