Which set of ink should I start out with, I can only get 1.
Hi everyone, Happy Easter! I hope you all are having a lovely day.
It is rainy and dreary here.
I can only afford to get 1 set of ink pads and I am thinking about the bold colors. Do you think that would be a good one for now? I also like most of the royal regals. Of course pastels are wonderful but they look really light, maybe too light to show up.
I love this website. The cards you all make are awesome!!
So far on my list:
versamark pad
dazzling diamonds pwder
lovely as a tree 1/2 off!
in full bloom
sporting goods, my son plays sports, or I could get the other set but this has the golf tee.
simply sweet
Daisy stamp set
maybe nice and easy notes or something similar.
and I love It's a party! I love the critters but I don't need the lettered stamps. I just want the characters! lol too cute!
When I started I opted for black ink and a set of pastels and the versamark pad. I could have lots of colors that way. Eventually I popped for the BB set later on. I have young kids and use those colors all the time.
hi! I have all 4 sets and I use the bold brights the most often (and black). I also have some of the spots, but I don't care for them too much and I ended up giving most away as door prize gifts.
When I started, I selected Earth Elements because that is my favorite family (I found I tended to be drawn more to these colors and knew they would work with my sets). The 2nd set that I got was Rich Regals (you can't go wrong with the different blues, pinks, etc.). RR might be best at this time of year because of Mother's Day and Father's Day !!!
I agree, if you can only get one set get the BB set. I have been able to stamp them off on scrap paper and get a soft effect for my baby and spring cards.
I agree with julie, On account of spring being here and summer just around the corner, I would go with the BB, like s1itcher46 said, you can always stamp off for a softer effect.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend Nice & Easy Notes. I got it as one of my first sets and never could get the look I wanted and hardly EVER used it. Got rid of it, finally. I would recommend Sketch an Event for a all occasion set. Check the gallery there are some great samples using that set and it's cheaper. YMHO
I agree - get Bold Brights. That was the first full set of pads I got when I started stamping. They are also the ones I still use most often. I now have all the full size pads and love them.

I vote for Bold Brights...some of the soft subtles are very light, and are great for more advanced projects, but you can lighten the brights by stamping off, or if you watercolor, water it down a little. That way you get more versatility from one set. I agree with the others...add black and maybe Basic Brown.

I think that if you can only get one family the bold brights offers the most versatility, you've got purples, pinks, greens, blues, everything. There's a lot of variety. The other color groups are more focused, IMO.
Ditto on mopsandt's comment about Nice and Easy Notes. I also had it and sold it about a year ago. This is one of those sets that has been around FOREVER, so it will surely retire soon.
I think Bold Brights are the best to start with. It has all of the primary colors (red and green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, etc . . .) and they are the best for Summer colors! I always recommend Bold Brights to those who don't know where to start!

I say if you Love Nice & Easy Notes, then get it *because* I think it will retire soon. It was one of my first sets and I still love it. If you're looking for a different all-occasion set, check out Greetings Galore. The "Happy Everything" stamp is just to die for!
I agree with buying the BB for your first set. Just in case you don't know what "stamping off" is, it's when you ink up your stamp and then stamp lightly on scratch paper before stamping on your card. It gives you a softer effect and makes your ink pads more versatile. You can get pastels and brights from one set of inks!
Not quite two years ago I went to an SU! party having never stamped before. I bought the entire set of Rich Regals stamp pads and Toile Blossoms and Elegant Greetings stamp sets right then and there. I bought Earth Elements pads next, and didn't get Bold Basics until some time later. I guess it depends on your style and what stamp sets you have.

Bold Brights gets my vote but I would also add a black pad too. I did not want black when I did my first couple of orders but my demo added it to my hubbies order for xmas and I use it a lot. I kept telling her I did not want it but I was wrong. I use my bold brights the most out of all my color families. Good luck and happy stampin.
I agree, if you can only get one set get the BB set. I have been able to stamp them off on scrap paper and get a soft effect for my baby and spring cards.
I actually started off with more Rich Regals because my taste was flowery and victorian!!
But for versatility and time of year, I have to agree with Bold Brights. And for now you can (as many said) stamp off for a lighter look when you want it.
Maybe you can get Earth Elements for your fall cards.
Don't short the Soft Subtles, though. While they don't always show up great in the scans, they are beautiful colors. I love using the new Paint Prints set with Soft Subtle colors on shimmery white paper!
And as soon as my scanner starts talking to my computer again, I'll post some!!!

I got Bold Brights Stampin Spots (and cardstock) and a black ink pad first.
Next I'm getting Earth Elements Stampin Spots (and cardstock) and the Versamark pad.
Funny about Nice N Easy Notes - that was the first set of stamps I chose because I thought I'd get a lot of use out of them and I have. They cover everything for a beginner I think - birthday, thank you, get well, and no reason.
I have way too many stamps to list that I'll be getting next
In my rapidly growing collection of "stuff" I have 2 full sets, BB and RR. And I have also commited the cardinal sin of not owning a basic black. Can you believe that? But it's coming in my next order. Hehe, I guess I was just waiting until I could get the EE set too, but how could I think I could do w/o a basic black????
I started with EE first - but that is just my personal style....and I don't have kids....which probably make a difference, too.
Why not try this - go into the gallery and pick 10 or 12 cards that catch your eye...and see what colors are predominant in those. That is what I do to help me decided what supplies I want. If every card you pick uses Rich Regals, then you should pronbably get those.
The spots are a great way to get lots of color when you are just starting out....you could get 2 sets for the price of one regular pad set.
And - lastly - I agree, skip Nice & Easy Notes. I bought it way back when and I haven't used it in a long time.
They do have a point.. if undecided you could get 2 sets of spots instead of 1 set of large pads!! Then you can decide later on what colors you want.
I have all of them so I am no help, but I did get Bold Brights First and I think the Soft Subtles was the last set I got in the new style... (I have all the old ones too ;) ) I just have to have them all!!!!
I would suggest looking at the full page of 48 colors, and see which has most of your favorites. These are the colors that you will end up using most. I bought two sets (BB & RR) in the full boxes and got the others a few at a time. However, I will say that there are colors I thought I'd never use, like Barely Banana, Really Rust and Ruby Red -- and I use them all the time! You would be surprised at some of the combinations that are just stunning. So unless you positively hate a color, I would try to get them all eventually.
I definitely say go for the bold brights. As mentioned, you can stamp off. I am glad that people are recommending the black pad, because it is great. I always tell my customers if you can only get 2 ink pads, get the versamark and the black. Also, I have started growing very fond of the basic brown (especially for the In Full Bloom set.). It offers a softer look to the black.
I would also recommend investing in a set of the blender pens. If you get the blender pens, you can use your ink pads (whichever you choose) to (water)color in your images!!
Definitely bold brights -- for all the reasons given. I do like the spots, and won't buy the full size pads (I prefer the Old Style), so I would suggest you get the bold brights and then either earth elements or royal regal, depending upon your preferences. Soft subtles is a little too pale for an every day set.

I have bought single colours all along and wish I had gotten EE and of course basic black.
BUTTTTTTTTTTTTT I hardly ever use the basic black!!!!!
I say get close to coco or chocolate chip. These are what I call the new black!
I just like that the browns don't look so harsh.
Of course basic black has its place when needed.
Bold Brights definitely. If you are looking for a set with words, try Greetings Galore. It has something for almost every occasion. I just used it with coloring in parts of it with markers, they loved it.
Okay I willl give you my 2 cents worth here. Go with two sets of stampin spots. Definitely take the advice of looking at which cards you like and see which colour family comes out on top. Make sure you have either Chocolate Chip or Basic Black or Night of Navy. Any of them are good with outline stamps and colouring. Personally I like Nice & Easy notes. I have found it an old reliable along with Feathered Friends. When I don't feel inspired they make a quick and easy card. I am an odd duck here in that the first stamp family I got was EE followed by RR then SS and lastly BB. I still don't use BB that often.
I didn't read every post, but glancing through them I see BB is the consensus.
And that was what I was going to say too!
NOT just because of spring, BUT because...........
Earth Elements has no blue shades
Rich Regals has no yellow/orange shades
Soft Subtles is pretty light for your main set of stamp pads
Bold Brights just seems to be the most versatile if you only have one. I think Real Red is probably one of the most (after black) used colors (think Christmas, valentines, patriotic), so I always recommend this group to customers that ask.
I started with a few bold bright pads and now have about 5-6 pads in each group except rich regals (i only have 2-3) and bold bright markers. For me that is enough of each color group right now. I use versamark on the colors I don't have ink for, layer with those I don't have matching ink, or stamp off on scrap paper of a darker color.
