Question Sewing on cards

Today I purchased a Janome Sew Mini. So excited about this purchase as it was recommended to me from loyal ladies here!

Now I have some more questions...I was standing there at Hancock Fabrics numb with all my thread options! What color do you use the most? What kind of thread? Any other suggestions for sewing on cards? I really need a 101 course. The last time I used a sewing machine was in home ec in sixth grade!

Thank you already!

Gina K has a nice bunch of tutorials on her blog. Here is the first one: http://blog.ginakdesigns.com/2008/02...he-bobbin.aspx You can find the others linked in her sidebar.

Congrats and have fun!

I really use white, black, ivory and brown quite a bit. SO, those are must have colors for me.

Check out www.stamptv.com. There is a series of videos on the right hand side, all the way down on the Janome Sew Mini with everything from how to set it up, thread it, make a bobbin and sew some basic stitches.

Here are the direct links to the videos:

I use an "invisible" nylon monofilament thread in the bobbin, and then the same bobbin works for any color of top thread.

Julia Stainton has a tutorial on her blog that gives some good tips for sewing on paper: Blogs at Splitcoaststampers

Gina K has great videos for setting up the machine and using it. I definitely recommend watching those! I use white thread in my bobbin and never change it. It is the underside so it doesn't matter what color it is. I just change the thread on the top when I want a different color on my card. I have heard the nylon can cut the thread, but I don't use it so I don't have any experience with it. My most used thread colors are white, cream, brown, and black. Occasionally, I'll use another card that coordinates with my patterned papers or image. Have fun!

I do a lot of quilting and use mono filament in the bobbin. Do not fill up the bobbin all the way with this thread, because it is so thin it will hold a lot on the bobbin and warp it out of shape. Then it won't fit in the bobbin holder right and sewing will be a nightmare. Also, I usually rotate which bobbin I use mono filament in too.

I mostly use a light brown thread-it looks great on a lot of different colors.

A multi-colored thread (like every 6 inches or so it blends into another color) can give a fun look to the card. Here's an example.

Hello again! As per usual, my trusty SCS always comes through. Thanks ladies for all the suggestions.

Gina, you're simply brilliant. THANK YOU for those tutorials! Talk about 101 - I'm not intimidated now. I will try sewing with it tonight! Can't wait!

Off to read Julia's right now. Thanks again! Happy stamping, creating, and sewing!

Hello ladies...I bravely attempted my first try at the sewing machine today in about 20 years! I was able to get some thread on the bobbin appropriately two times, but the first time and last time it ended up winding around below the bobbin? What am I doing wrong? Gina, I might need to watch your tutorials again. I was then able to thread it correctly so I could actually sew! I was so excited! I used a tan thread on soft sky paper, so it barely shows up, but I'm puffing my chest out to say, "Yay!" I'll take a picture and post it in my gallery as soon as I get a sentiment on it. Thanks again ladies!

Gina, I can't wait to the designer paper card for a baby - sooo cute!

I love my Janome Mini for sewing on cards, i usually use white most of the time, but once in a while I use a color to match the paper. You are all going to think I'm nuts, but I bought 2 of the Janome's, because I wanted to use one for strictly paper sewing and one for quilting. I know, crazy, but that's just me. I do love them.

Oh no, I don't think that's crazy at all. I just bought a machine for paper-crafting today in our discount supermarket. Every time for the last three or four years that they are on offer I look at them, and I've always held out because I already have one old Singer that will only sew straight but will sew through anything, and a Brother that I use for dress-making and am reluctant to use much for card. DH encouraged me to get the one today.

Depending on what you are doing, I think using variegated thread or metallics and other decorative threads would be neat. Although I do a lot of sewing I have only sewn on a card once.
