I don't know if you have done this, but have you ever purchased an entire set because it contained ONE stamp you just HAD to own? I have, though I am trying not to.
I have always wondered what others thought of the idea of swapping individual stamps from sets, or giving the ones you don't use away as RAK-type gifts. I loathe all kinds of waste, and if I have stamps that I am not using, even if they are part of a set, wouldn't it be better if they were being 'loved' by others rather than sitting on my shelf? Your thoughts? My concern is that some people would think doing so would be tacky or insulting or something.

I don't break up SU sets...ever...because I often sell them when I am done, unless I LOVE the whole set...in which case, there is no reason to break it up...so I voted for the last one....assuming you were talking about SU.
If you mean ANY set...It depends on if it holds its value...like PTI or Unity or Verve...I wouldn't break those up...purely because I might want to sell later.
Off brands...I would pass along any I don't use.

Oh, yeah! At the time, I normally manage to convince myself that I do like the others stamps in the set and will use them too, but that hardly ever happens . The one that comes to mind right now is Give Thanks. I love the bucket of apples and convinced myself I would use the other stamps too, but I don't ;).
I just did this! I had all sorts of SU sets I don't want -but each one has like one or 2 stamps I do want. I decided to just break them up. I know they won't sell cause they are, but maybe someday they will.I don't know.
I think if you're not using the other stamps, why not give them to someone who will? That's my opinion at least.
That is what I was thinking, I just never know if my good intentions would be misconstrued. A lot of times in my life I have have good intentions that had unintended consequences. You know the expression "no good deed goes unpunished"? ;)
There are also a lot of sets where I LOVEONE stamp of ____, but really just can't justify spending the money to buy the entire set, and think it would be cool if I could find someone that owns the set that has no interest in that one stamp. Other times I HAVE to have the set for the one stamp and think "What do I do with the others?"
I am a hobby demo. I don't sell my sets unless they were freebies (SAB sets where I have duplicates or hostess sets, if it is free I am going to pick something, you know?), so I don't buy sets for business purposes. So for me, breaking them up isn't as horrifiying as it is to some, LOL.
Thanks for the input so far everyone! Keep it coming!

Did you give them away, sell them or trade them Mary? Just curious.
I have done it once. I got Stamp of Authenticity for the library card stamp. I made an AWESOME Christmas card with that stamp this year for my son's 3rd grade teacher. Sadly, I didn't take a picture of it. Still. It's the only reason I bought that set at all. No regrets.

Basically, you "snag" something you like, and then list the stamps that you have available to pay it forward, for someone else to snag.
It gets rather addictive!
On the over all idea of breakin up sets, I know that tried and true SU people don't do it. However, as I am not a tried and true person, I don't have a problem with it! ;) I enjoy this and that stamps from many sets, so I don't see a problem breaking them up, giving as gifts, or passing them along to someone who would use them.
Maybe I'm a bit OCD but I cannot fathom the thought of breaking up a set.
In fact, I have an orphan stamp sitting on my desk right now - I can't remember which set it belongs to - when I allowed my daughter's confirmation group to make cards, it managed to get separated. I just haven't had time/energy to put it back but I will be doing that this week.
I voted for the last one!
I cannot imagine breaking up a set. When I am done with it, I will usually trade or sell it (retired) and I don't think you would get as much as if it were the original set.
I have also bought sets with a missing stamp and not have known it until I go and sell it and see that it was missing one. (That has happened twice to me...they were sets I wasn't really familiar with and they were small stamps...ones that you;d hardly notice were gone! Guess I didn't notice!)
I used to be in the last group of GASP. In fact, that's how I reacted when my mom told be that she separates her sets. To each their own. I do still have the "What if I need it someday" mentality for the most part, but I'm learning to let go. With all of the amazing stamp companies these days I'm sure I could find something I like even better than the stamps I may give away.
I bet I have 60+ sets that I bought because I wanted one stamp in the set! That hurts the old pocket book big time.
Trading out with others is super! I don't sell off my stamps sets, so it's not a problem to me and there is always someone who needs or wants a part of something to give them too!
Right now, there is one stamp I want and I am trying to justify the $30+ for the set to get it!
Trading is a *good thing*......

I think you should do what make you happy. If thats breaking up a set then go for it. If you are not using it and think someone else might then rak it to them or trade it off for ones you will use. Why let it sit around collecting dust.

I've bought a lot of sets just because I wanted one particular stamp, but I don't think I could bear to break up a set. It would be like breaking up a family! I have bought two sets that were already broken up, but I didn't break them up just bought them that way...sort of like "rescuing for stamps."

Karen, let me know what it is, maybe I can help you out, never know. ;)
I would love to trade or give away.
I have too many sets with stamps I don't use!!!
Would free some space too.
My New Year resolution - of many - think, think, think before I buy sets!!!
I voted 3 because it's the closest to what I think. "I would not be interested in trading individual stamps from sets but would not mind receiving some."
I have bought sets for one stamp. I tried a few times to go in with a friend to buy the set but they always like "the one" stamp that I want. There are some sets that I have waited until they are to retire and if I still "need" the one stamp, I'll get the set.
I wouldn't give a set with missing stamps as a "gift" but I do give used or never used stamps to my stamping buddies. I don't want to get into online selling or online swapping. I had good and bad experiences with swapping, so I'll just let my friends take what they want and then off to good will they go.
Also, I'm another one that breaks out the sets. I have no desire to get out multiple boxes of stamps when I can go to a drawer and get what I want.
I voted GASP! HORROR  I bought a set on eBay once, and there was a stamp missing from the set, it vexes me to this day
I can understand being upset that a stamp was missing when you bought a set - you were expecting a complete set! I'd be pissed too!
I was just thinking of a way to save space and perhaps make other stampers happy giving away stamps that I do not use from sets I own, in little scrappy/stamping goody gift bags or something. I didn't know if people who received them would think it were tacky or if there was a larger audience for trading single stamps so I don't have to buy entire sets for single stamps anymore (not that I have to of course, but sometimes I REALLY want a stamp for a card for my hubby when he is deployed or for a friend's birthday, etc.). I loathe waste of all kinds, and if someone else will looooove something I never use anyway...
I was hoping for more votes in the 3rd category. :(
Sorry that happened. Have you tried contacting the seller? Maybe they didn't know it was missing and can look for it for you?
I think I would get physically sick if I were to break up my sets...if I lose a stamp I cant sleep for days. I guess I am really OCD as my hubby says...oh well there are worse things to be I guess.
Blessings.
I would love to get individual stamps. And I wouldn't mind getting rid of some of the ones I don't use. I don't store my stamps in sets nor do I use them in sets, so getting rid of the ones I don't really use would save me space (and weight when we move) and getting ones I'd love without having to buy those I don't really want would be great.
I have never (at least not that I can recall) bought a set for just one stamp, though I have whined and moaned and yelled at the catalog when I've really wanted one stamp in a set but couldn't justify the $$ for just that one.

Unfortunately, it happended a long time ago, when I first started stamping, and I convinced myself at the time, that it was no big deal Little did I know how "BIG" of a hobby this would become for me
And, despite my vote, if someone gave me a stamp out of another set, you would never hear me complaining! But, i think I would be unlikely to break up one of my sets, because I am certain the minute I did, I would have a use for the stamp I was getting rid of. So maybe I should have voted for the 3rd
I am so obsessive that I number all of the stamps themselves, to coordinate with the stamp sets, then store them numerically. That way, I know where they all go back to... So, no, I couldn't break them up. I would just look on WISHRAK to send images to people who wanted the ones I don't care for (and keep the stamp itself- so I am using it, but someone else who likes it can use the image, too), and if I wanted a single image from a set I would wish for the image on WISHRAK. It's a great moneysaver, and it has convinced me not to buy for single stamps (very often) anymore. Oh yeah, and it's just plain fun to stamp for someone else!
I voted for: #3 I would not be interested in trading individual stamps from sets but would not mind receiving some.
I recently purchased SU "Dream Catcher". The set is missing the 2 smaller stamps, I knew they were missing before buying. It was one of the many sets on my "ISO" list. The four (what I consider) most important stamps were there and I couldn't pass up the price ($10) but sure wish it was a complete set. I am hoping I will come across the 2 missing stamps eventually.
I don't think I could ever intentionally break up a set.
I did this once. I really wanted two of the stamps from the Many Merry Messages (I think that's what it's called). I hated the idea of buying the whole set and not using the other stamps. But I purchased it anyway, kept the stamps I wanted and sold the others on ebay as individual stamps. I actually sold the single stamps for more than the whole stamp set cost so it turned out well for me.
I have also given away or traded single stamps from sets I only wanted one or two images from.

Thanks Suan, this is encouraging!
I do not know if I have the time or patience to deal with selling individual stamps on ebay (we just adopted a shelter dog, and it doesn't look like he is housebroken), but knowing you had success giving them away and selling them is promising for me. Thanks for posting!
I have this problem when it comes to sets that have Halloween stamps. I don't celebrate Halloween, but I always think, "but if I sell the set someday, it won't be complete without it . . ." -- so I keep them in the set.
I too hate being wastefull and taking up valuable space with things that will never be used, but I am a diehard SU gal and I couldn't break up a set. I can't even bring myself to take sets apart and store like stamps with like stamps. That being said, if I had the opportunity to buy just one stamp from a set that I really wanted, I would do that and store it with my non SU single stamps.
Just a thought...Does anyone have the Fireman set that retired a few years back and want to sell just the Dalmatian stamp? If so PM me!!!!:-P
