I am also in the "Baroque Motifs as a tattoo" club- for #3.... getting my hair cut this week, so maybe i'll put it on the back of my neck too.. angel policy schmangel policy ;)
You all realize the next step after the tattoos is gettng rhinestone piercings to go along with it, don't ya?
well the girl that had the baroque flourish put on her side told me it cost her
$150 and 2 hours of needle pain....I had no idea tattoo's cost so much...I am still waiting for her to come back into the bar so I can get a picture!!

Mine took 45 minutes and cost me $200.
It really is amazing how much they cost.....but it's an art form.
My tattoo artist (Eric Henshaw) is very well known in the world of tattoos. He apprenticed under his father, Bald Bill Henshaw, who is a nationally known award-winning tattoo artist. Eric didn't come cheap because of this. But I wanted it done and I wanted it done right, so it was worth it to me to pay a true professional.
I have plans for an armband done in Hebrew characters and that one is going to cost me about $275, so that will have to wait until we buy a house next year. ;)
If you figure in the time, the art, the equipment, etc. it's worth it. Especially if you have a professional artist do it for you.

Oh I'm definitely one of the "pay more for better quality".........and I did a lot of investigating and talking to friends to find the best place with extremely clean practices and standards.............my small tat was $100 and the next one I want will be $200......so I do have to save some more for that..........but there's lots of stamp sets I want too!!!! Ahhhhh......the dilemma!!! ;)
You are right....it is art, and you do get what you pay for..just like with crappy cheap stamps!
I was just thinking I have to even donate blood( I am terrified of needles) so I just couldn't even think about paying for the pain! LOL
Did you take pictures while you had yours done and make a scrapbook page - !! that would be neat!
I have a very low pain threshold and wasn't sure how I was going to do when I got it done. I didn't eat before I went because I was afraid that I was going to throw up. When I got there and signed the release form, though, one of the requirements was that I had to have something in my stomach so that my blood sugar wouldn't go too low. I went next door and got a chocolate chip cookie at the bakery. I also sucked through 3 blow pops while I was there so that it would keep my mind on something else and keep my blood sugar up.
I had my hubby come with me (though he wouldn't have missed it for anything) so that he could take pictures.....and also because I said that I wouldn't allow another guy THAT close to my back end (I had it done on the small of my back) without having my husband with me. ;) I have pictures and still haven't put them on a scrapbook page, but I have big plans (I got the tattoo 4 years ago). The good thing is, I know EXACTLY what stamp I'm going to use to decorate my pages! LOL! The pictures were taken with my 35mm (before I got a digital) so I took a picture of the picture and uploaded it here. I have others, but this one is a favorite.
I figured that if I could give birth to two babies at home, without meds, and one of them was with an ankle that I had broken in 2 places 3 weeks before giving birth, then I could handle a tattoo.
Now I want more.....they're addictive. The adrenaline rush you get from them is amazing. ;)

Actually, the worst pain was when I washed it that night after getting home.
After the tattoo was done, Eric gave me a paper with a list of care instructions. He explained what care needed to be done considering that this was now considered an "open wound." I said, "huh?" He said, "Well, considering that the 'needle' is actually 5 needles across, I've just put thousands of holes into the surface of your skin in that area. It's a open wound."
That made me a little freaked out.
When we got home, I sat down on the edge of the tub so that my husband could pour some water over it to wash it. That water over the wound felt 100 times more painful than getting the tattoo done! I instantly had tears in my eyes (which I didn't have at ALL while getting it done) and I screamed out in pain. It felt like someone had just held a blow torch to my skin!
To make it worse, my husband felt so bad and wanted to get the water off as soon as possible, so he started patting it with a stiff/starchy VERY nubbly terry cloth towel! I about went through the roof!
And just to prove how stupid I really can be, I had this done the night before we had to do a catering job for 50+ people in the hot sun and had to be on our feet all day. I covered the tattoo with gauze so that my pants wouldn't be rubbing up against it all day.
And..........to reiterate how stupid I really can be, the day AFTER that (so, 2 days after I got the tattoo done), we went on a family camping trip for 10 days to Nova Scotia.....and I had to sit in the SUV for a 14 hour drive straight through.
*doh!*
Next time won't be like that. We're not in catering anymore and the next one will be on my arm. ;)

And even through all of that, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
I figure that I'm only going to live once, I'll be dead a long time, and this body of mine is a great canvas for great art. And I've got plenty of canvas. ;)

okay...after reading your story, I think I will stick to the tattoo kit in the SU catalog made for kids!!! I have no courage - LOL
I find if you put a vaseline or savlon on, then you don't really get the itching as it keeps the skin moist, you also don't scab that much then.
In fact, my tat artist had me use Bag Balm!! For 10 days applied once a day after washing it with mild dishsoap!! Worked like a charm!! No scab and no itching!!

Check with your artist on what to use most will recommend Aquaphor and only for the 1st week. If you really want to know about tattoos check out http://www.inkednation.com/ but be warned this site is mostly an artist site and unfortunately some artist really don't like doing fluff. Fluff is the standard requests butterflies, faries and sunshines that most chicks like.
I know because I have a "fluff" piece and did not do a lot of research. Knew what I wanted and the design is very significant to me. I had it done on a whim while on a trip to Austin last year. It looked great on the stencil but the finished piece did not match the stencil. You don't know for sure until all the swelling goes down and such. I had to get it touched up locally and still it looks kind of wonky. So research your artist and ask to see their portfolio is my best advice!
On a side note -my husband surprised me last November while he was on a business trip and came back with a HUGE matching tattoo to mine! We are BRANDED for life now. I still have mixed feelings and sometimes say it is true "white-trash/redneck" love but it was very very sweet. Mine was his first and he said it more permanent than a ring. Lucky for him I didn't get a lily or something more girly
Now for my next one if I go for it... was thinking of the of the horse in SU! Equestrain Dream that has flowing mane in honor of my brother who we lost this year! I think it would make a beautiful tattoo!

Never had any scabbing but did itch.

Is the ankle as painful as I've heard many say?? I'd like a tat (I think a Fire Fairy).......but I'm thinking above the ankle would be less painful........the one on my chest was very little pain.......but I've heard bony areas are pretty painful. Just wondering what you thought? I have plenty of...........ummmmmmm........"cushioning" everywhere but the ankles!!!

Mine is not right on the ankle bone but when I wear socks they cover it up.

Absolutely!!! Oh my GOSH. My first tattoo is on my upper thigh. It didn't really hurt... maybe it was like a cat scratching in the same spot over and over. My other tattoo is on my ankle, more towards the back of the ankle. I couldn't even stop my leg from twitching on its own. Some tattoo shops will (for a fee) put a topical anesthetic on your skin so that you can't feel the tattoo being put on. If I ever get another tattoo, I will probably go that route, depending on where I'm getting. ;)

I have a tattoo on my lower back of the Chinese symbol for Harmony (my middle name). So when I saw the Kanji set, I had to snatch it up right away! It's how I sign my cards.
Although, I did get my tattoo 5 years ago (before I started stamping), so it's not like I'm infringing on the "Angel Policy". But the thought of a stamp tattooed does appeal to me now...
There just mey be some "infringing" in my future!!

I love how her tattoo came out!!!! I want another one but my husband it fighting me. I have a arm band that needs to be fixed. I agree to take your time and check out the people first. I got a cheap tattoo done fast and you can tell. That is the only one out of 4 that I regret.
OMG this was an awesome thread... so funny. I have a couple tattoos, and my mom of course doesnt like them because of the whole "its too permanent" thing. but she loves stamping with me. So my hubby and I decided to stamp the baroque motifs stamp on me and convince her it was a tat just to see if she would approve of it just because of how much she loves the stamps... we just said this this morning then I come on here and see all of this. thats awesome!
My first tattoo hurt really bad. It is a butterfly on my stomach. I am bad with pain usually anyway- but this was bad. I've even been through having two kids... and still mention getting this tattoo as bad. Let just say the tat shop tells the story of me when people come in there... because when he first started- the pain shocked me... and yes.. I did it... I grabbed his hand. And up ran the needle putting a long black line on me. Imagine my pain, and humiliation. But he is a wonderful artist, and he made it look great- and you would never know by looking at it. And it was well worth it in the end....
YES VERY ADDICTIVE. Its all you think about afterwards "what can I get next?" I did also get a tattoo on my lower back. Its a symbol that an artist friend of mine designed and underneath it is "beginning and end" in Hebrew. This one didnt hurt near as much as the one on my stomach. I chose a Venetian Brown, and it doesnt stick very well, so I have actually gotten this one done 3 times already. My tat artist is begging me to chose a different color as he warned me that this one tends to not stick, but I am stubborn.
Dont let the stories of pain scare you. IF you want one- get one. Its worth it. Bad pain? yes definately. But for such a short period of time. Then you have a beautiful, hopefully meaningful piece of artwork on your body for good. Not getting one because of the pain would be like not having children because of the pain. That would be dumb. The best things in life are NOT free, and the DO cost a LOT.
I have two. I have my boys' baby footprints w/their names on my left calf. I also have a really awesome frog on my right foot. I am a needle-phobe and sat and talked to my tat artist throughout my leg and most of the way through my foot. I hardly felt my leg; it was more of an annoyance than anything. My foot on the other hand -do you know just how many nerve endings are in your feet? Actually, it was quite interesting b/c in spots I couldn't feel the needles at all but in others I had to physically sit on my hands not to grab the artist. And yep, I'm going back for more!
Love this thread!!
My tattoo is around my ankle. I love ankle bracelets but I exercise a lot, and taking those silly anklets on and off all the time was a big pain....so I got a very delicate floral vine tattooed around my ankle. I really like it, but it hurt like a son-of-a-gun, especially around the back where it is closest to the bone.
Totally true--you get what you pay for. My little one cost over $100.
