You should keep them flat so the ink stays on the surface of the pad so you can get good coverage on you stamps.

From what I understand, these pads are supposed to be kept flat with the "Stampin Up" right side up. This way the pad is kept juicy for whenever you want to use it. I would think if you kept it sideways that the ink would gravitate to the edge of the pad that is down.
I really don't know, but I was told by my upline when she signed me up, that was the reason for the design change of the pads a few years ago.
I hope that helps. I keep my pads flat in a wooden rack that is on a turntable, always ready to use on my table.
Being new this past year to SU, I have kept my ink pads in the boxes that they arrived in.....if memory serves me correctly, they are standing on end in the box if the box is stored with the label showing. Does that make sense? I just thought since they were packaged in this manner that it meant to store them like so. I am really confused now as someone a few days ago told me that I really should take them out of the box and store them upside down with the SU label facing the table surface.....help!
Andy is correct. I have the boxes each color family comes in and had them set-up (lid folded backwards, etc.) on my table. I didn't think anything about it until I noticed that after about a week or so the ink seemed to gravitate to the end that was lower. Oops! Now I no longer have the boxes set at an angle to make sure the pads are all level. I probably need to turn them around so the ink distributes more evenly because even after a couple of weeks flat, the ink still seems to be more concentrated at one end. HTH.

Turn your pads over! The SU ink pads automatically turn upside down when you close them so you don't have to store them upside down. This way the ink pads are always juicy. HTH
The new design of SU pads can be stored flat with the label on top because the pad is upside down already; but if you have any of the older smaller ink pads, you can store them flat upside down so the ink stays at the top of the pad.
