"SU just announced this to managers and higher, demos will be told tomorrow. They are recommending that you stock up now on non-retiring items to avoid the hike."
Yes. SU says they haven't had an "across-the-board" increase in a very long time. Production and shipping costs have gone up and so has the cost of supplies.
Guess we should have expected it. Everything else is going up. :(
puh... thats what they said last year when they raised the costs on paper!!!

Yep, and cardstock DID go up!!! Supposedly no increase in shipping is what I heard? Not verified though.
OK... my electric went up 50 perecent on Jan. 1, gasoline is thru the roof, SU is raising its rates, the PO is in on the action...... won't have to worry about SAVING my DH's big THREE PERCENT raise, huh? ;(
I'm a Sr. Manager with SU and got the email through SU. Just want to set the record straight here......
Shipping will NOT be affected by this. This is confirmed in the email they sent out to Managers and above in title. They made it very clear that while shipping costs have gone up, they will be absorbing the cost.
SU has not done an "across the board" price increase in OVER TEN YEARS. While almost everything else around us has gone up (gas prices, utilities, groceries, etc.) in the past 10 years, SU has remained on a level pricing grade. The only things that have gone up in the last 10 years were a few stamp sets back in 2001 and the cardstock and a couple of accessories last year. 2 years ago, the prices of both the paper cutter AND the embossing gun went DOWN! (I don't remember anyone complaining about that, though....funny how that happens. ;) )
Costs of raw materials rise, the cost of gasoline has risen, the costs of utilities have risen and that effects the costs of production as it takes utilities to produce these products.....
As much as it would be nice to have things remain the same year after year after year after year......it's just not possible. Just as others costs have risen around us, it's eventually going to affect the things we love the most.....papercrafting supplies. I think it's actually amazing that SU has held on this long at the price point they've been at. If they don't raise their prices in accordance to what it's costing them to provide these products to us, we'd eventually not even have this company to do business with. They would fall victim to operating above their means and none of us want to see that.
I'm sure that they don't want to have to raise their prices, as they know how a bunch of passionate paper crafting women will react to it, but they do it because they have to. Don't forget that all of their costs have risen to, just like ours have (gas, utilities, etc.). They're a victim of high fuel, electric, gas, etc. just like every one of us.
Just 10 years ago, the price of regular grade gas was $1.17 a gallon. Today, it's an average of $3.09 a gallon. That's almost a 200% increase in 10 years!
It makes SU's 5% increase in 10 years look small, eh? ;)

I am not a business person, but if it had been me I would not have announced this on the same day that people are so disgruntled about postage prices going up. I think people feel unindated lately.
Everything has gone up, but I can name one thing that hasn't----DH's wages. Oh I keep forgetting that's not a good thing, even though his employer thinks it is. LOL Just trying to be funny. If you don't laugh you'll cry and you know how ugly you can be when you cry.

The USPS announced postage price increases well in advance of today, when they actually went into effect.
SU!'s price increases will not go into effect until the new catalog is released July 1st. I don't believe it was SU! corporate itself that actually announced this information "publicy" (meaning, outside the demonstrator base).
I suppose, no matter when one hears it, nobody enjoys hearing about a price increase on anything. But, if there's a particular day when folks might feel better about hearing it, I'd like to know which day that is! ;)

I think it's amazing that the prices of the stamp sets are as low as they are. Where can you get 8 stamps for $28.00? That's only about $3.62 per stamp;)
1 stamp at Micheals and other craft stores is $8.00 and it doesnt come with friends that match it just right
With the way prices are going up on everything else, I am thrilled to see that SU is ONLY going up 5% ... I was afraid of a bigger increase to be honest. Even on a $100.00, we are only looking at $5.00 more... still cheaper than buying stamps singlely and you can't beat the quality!!
I don't understand why SU makes these annoucements. Pottery Barn, Lands End, Michaels, etc. do NOT make announcements when they raise prices. If the new catalog came out, and they didn't mention it, I'm not sure many people would notice. Or they could phase in one at a time over each of the seasonal catalogs, since they are switching to that format.

OK, that's just about one of the cutest ways to phrase it I've ever seen!
You gave me a great chuckle!

One of the reasons they announced it was so that demonstrators could purchase supplies ahead of time at current prices. It was mostly done in consideration of those of us that have to go through lots of cardstocks and accessories for business use. I thought that was very nice of them to let us know ahead of time.......but like anything SU tells us ahead of time, it makes its way on the boards and then the "real fun" begins. ;)

I am totally fine with the increase. It has been awhile since they were raised but it has not been 10 years. I remember an increase in prices the year before I became a demo in 2001. ;)

I'd be willing to bet the companies you mentioned probably don't, but, they probably do inform their sales force so they can be preparedfor these changes within their stores.
But, as far as SU! goes, as SunshineMama already alluded . . . well . . . ;) *chuckle*

I'd prefer a 5% increase in price to a decrease in quality any day! And honestly, with SU's costs rising, that's pretty much the choice they're faced with... I'm glad they're not going to compromise on thier great quality

I agree with many of the previous posts...5% really isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things and the quality is definitely worth it!!!!! I'm glad SU gave us a heads-up because I'm sure a lot of us would have noticed when the new catalog came out!

Prices of so many other goods and services has gone up, yet you don't really notice it because no one comes out and announces it. So noticeable in a catalogue, but how noticeable in the grocery aisle? Prices creep up here and there . . . companies retool their lines to make containers hold fewer ounces . . . I know it stinks to have CS and postage go up at the same time. I used to only buy SU and now I buy a lot of stuff from other vendors but I still think their stamp sets are a great deal compared to buying stamps individually and the CS quality is great.
I don't have a choice when it comes to the increase price on food, gas, utilities. I do have a choice to spend on my stamp and craft "stuff". My orders averages $40/$50 per order so that's an increase of $2.00/$2.50. I can SOOOOO see me being able to budget that in. I am so excited about the new catalog. The cost of everything continues to rise. I enjoy stamping/crafting and as long as I can budget it I will continue to love it. I'm getting all tingly (spelling?) just thinking about the new stuff!

Is it true?
TIA!
I am very sorry to hear that. They already had high shipping. I love their paper and inks but may have to rethink what I am doing.

I am prepared to have my head ripped off...you say that the shipping percentage isn't going up, and while it stays a steady 10%, when the prices off which you base this shipping cost is going up, that means your shipping price goes up.
Let me say this, I LOVE SU!! I buy way too much of their stuff, but have to say my biggest complaint is not the price of their stamps, which is great, but the shipping costs are VERY high. I could buy a lot more stuff if their shipping wasn't so high!
OK, let the head ripping begin...maybe if I do this with my head it will make it more difficult to rip it off, lol!!

Something else to keep in mind with the price increase is that the hostess levels didn't change, so it is still only $150.00 for the benifits to start.

I think I'm with Housefan... it's not like it's that big of an increase, and not a huge shocker, but I paid over $1 more to send a package than I would have last week AND gas went up another 15 cents in one second here this afternoon, so it's like MAN..... it's been too much at once or something.

I can't put a price on sanity... even my lowest copay on the sanity meds :-P cost less than a set of stamps from SU!
