Default tile coaster help please

i finally went to lowes and got all the stuff i needed to make some tile coasters and magnets. but now i have some questions!! for the magnets, i'm going to spray them with a sealent but for the coasters i was going to but them in the oven at 200 degrees for 20 minutes to set them. i read here where if you do that, they retain absorbability(is that a real word!!). But, this a.m., i read in this forum that stayonz is not supposed to be put in the oven because of toxic fumes! is that right? help!! i want to get started on these!! Meg

I do not bake my tiles but use the sealant.

I would assume that stazon is toxic b/c of the solvent in the ink - I wold NOT bake it!

Just my opinion.

I don't bake mine either. I spray sealant on them and I have even tried scrubbing off the stazon and pencils I use and nothing comes off. HTH!

If you are using the tumbled marble tiles you don't need to do anything. If you use a sealer then you will lose the absorbancy of the tile. You would only need to use a sealer if you are coloring your tiles with chalks, but if you are just using stazon or sharpies then you don't need to seal or bake.

Default tile coaster help,please

I agree, I made the magnets yesterday for our local town holiday celebration. We used staz-on and some of the kids messed up a little. When I got home, I tried to wash them off to reuse. I held them under running water, and the ink wouldn't wash off until I used the Staz-on Solvent cleaner.

I don't know anything about the absorbency, though. We put the magnets on the tiles first with a glue gun, and then the kids stamped. This was a suggestion by another SCS member. Worked out great :!:

I color mine in with SU markers and BAKE them, otherwise they would bleed. I also seal them. The baking keeps it from bleeding with the sealant. So far, I haven't grown an extra tail from baking the Stazon. Who knows?

I bake mine and haven't smelled any unusual odors nor has any detectors gone off. I think you'd be safe either way. Personally i'd rather heat set them and have "absorbability" then spray them and loose the original intention of the gift. Just my opinion of course

All the ones I have done that are in my gallery here, have been baked in the oven @ 350 for 10 minutes, and as noted in previous posts, I am not dead or twitching yet! And I used the stazon ink and sharpies pens. HTH.... Good luck and happy stamping.

For my tumbled tiles I have only used Stazon and sharpies and I do bake them in the oven to heat set - there is no right temp as i have baked mine as low as 200 and as high as 350 anywhere from 10-25 minutes...I have baked them the same time I had the oven going for a cassarole and so far I am still alive..

all have come out wonderfully - if you seal the tiles they will not be able to absorb if you are using them with a cold drink that "sweats".

if you are using just stazon and sharpies you don't have to bake them BUT I have found that sometimes the color can fade if you clean them with a basic household cleaner or soap and water compared to ones that are baked - no fading

for the small tiles for magnets be sure to do some tests with the sealant you use. - I have found that without sealing them the staz-on/sharpie just sits ontop of the tile since it isn't absorbant so it could rub off on occasion - BUT if you seal them sometimes the sealent will chip and it takes the image off...What I have started doing is stamping and coloring and then putting the small tiles in the microwave for about 20 seconds to heat set them (warning they will be hot) - no rubbing off of the image and no need to seal them...
