I want to get my mom one of these for Christmas ... but can't decide which one to buy for her!
Which one do you use more ... the pencils or the pastels?
I love the look of using the Gamsol and blending stumps with the pencils ... I was thinking maybe I should get her the pencils, some Gamsol and stumps?
Or are Pastels the way to go?
Also ... if I go with the pencils ... should I buy the SU! pencils ... or should I use a coupon at a local craft store and buy the Prismacolors? Which do you prefer?
Thanks for your help ... I am running out of time and I need to make a decision!
I'd pick any kind of pencil over the pastels. I like what other people do with the pastels, but my own results always disappoint me. Just remember, SU!'s watercolor pencils will give a different result than Prismacolors and Gamsol.
Now I'm just guessing that you're not planning to spend that much on this based on the 2 choices, but I'd personally go for the Watercolor Wonder Crayons.;)

I don't really care for the watercolor pencils. I did get the pastels for Christmas last year and was thrilled with them, but I really haven't used them as much as I had thought. I LOVE my aquapainter and ink pads best!

Thanks for your opinion! When you stated that SU! pencils will give a different result ... what did you mean?
Do most people prefer the WW Crayons to the pencils and the pastels now?
Prismacolor pencils give a more brilliant result than watercolor pencils. With a watercolor pencil you'd color the image or part of it and move the color around with a wet brush, aqua painter or blender pen. Prismacolor pigment is not water based, which is why you have to use Gamsol (mineral spirits) to move it around on the paper with a stump. The color is more brilliant with Prismacolor. They're also more expensive than watercolor pencils.
I like the WWC's because you can get more brilliant color, but also can use them in other ways, like coloring directly on the stamp and then misting with water.
Check out the info in this link about Prismacolors and Gamsol from the Techniques forum. There's a lot of infor there I found useful.

I love the ww crayons, but in the price range of $20-$25 I'd pick the pastels. they are so easy, and always look nice, plus you get all 48 colors. I like the watercolor pencils too, but I really find myself reaching for pastels more than pencils.

I have both and I use the pastels much more than the pencils. The nice thing about the pastels is you can use them both with blender pens (for coloring) and without (for coloring and also for popping pastels). AND you get all the colors with the pastels -- colors that really match!

One advantage of the watercolor pencils is that they are portable. You can stamp a bunch of images and take them and your pencils and color while you wait at the doctors, during soccer practice or whatever. I wouldn't recommend that with either the WWC or the pastels because they could break.
I love both my pastels and my wc crayons, and I use both equally. What I choose depends on what I look I'm going after. You can't go wrong with either.
Pastels for sure because they come in the 48 SU colors. Watercolor pencils don't. I love using the poppin pastels technique, so if she doesn't have one I'd get her a versamark as well. (Or have someone put it in her stocking.)
