Question What is the best way to color Bellas (or any image)?

Hi Ladies,

Ok, I just got my Bellas and am struggling with coloring them. They look so BEAUTIFUL here in the galleries! I invested in aquapainters and 2 sets of color crayons (Earth Elements, Soft Subtles). It was quite a chunk of change, and I don't have any money for anything else at this time.

But, I can't seem to get shading to look right, and I am not happy with my coloring results yet. I know I will get better with time, but I am starting to feel like maybe I should have gone the Prismacolor/Gamsol route?

What do you use? Any tips for shading using aquapainters? I read the tutorial in the Resources tab and not much on shading. Thanks so much in advance!

Michelle,

I use Prismacolor pencils and Gamsol for mine, OR, I've also colored in using the ink in the lid of my stamp pad with the blender pens. I would ink up and then just color the top part/edges of the image and then blend it towards the middle which gives the shading effect. I did that on this card:

I either use reinkers or the lid of the ink pad and my aquapainter. I also use watercolor paper, which I think is the key, it enables you to move the color around far more easily than normal paper.

Both of these examples were done using ink pads on watercolor paper. I really would invest in some for your bellas, you can get it from stationers or SU.

Thanks ladies! Great cards by the way. Ally, quick followup question... how do you use reinkers? Do you put some in a dish and add water to it? I do have some watercolor paper and you are right, much better than normal cardstock! I practised tonight using the blender pen on the outside to get a bit of shading. Turned out a little better. I think I need practise!

I use the case of a SU set with reinkers, I squirt a little into the case. I don't water it down, I just draw a little of the ink away from the pool of ink and swirl, if the color is too strong, I just squeeze my pen a little to use a little more water. But I love intense color, so this card was made using reinkers

When I'm done, I just wipe out the case with a wet wipe or wet cloth.
But the person's whose work I love with reinkers is Yvette her gallery is here!

My advice is just play, no-one gets it straight away, it's just trial and error, but the Bellas are perfect for you because they are very straight-lined! HTH!

I tend to use my prismacolors and gamasol, but I recently discovered the splender pencil!! NO need for stumps or the gamasol.
But I also use my aquapainter and ink pads. While the pad is shut, I give it a good squeeze to get some ink on the lid and just go from there. I don't want to have to go searching for the reinkers

Is the splender pencil different from the Prismacolor colorless blender?

Anyone know where to get one that doesn't cost $4 to ship? Hate that.

Sorry, I don't think so. The best thing to do would be to contact Emily direct on www.stampingbella.com I don't think she sells to that many stores outside Canada. The only other thing I can suggest is maybe find some friends who would like them too and split the shipping.
Are you sure it's that much to ship to you? I had three of them shipped to me in the UK and it only cost $4.

Okay... I've discovered that perhaps it was the watercolor crayons that totally had me messed up! Using an aquapainter and/or blender pen with the reinkers has totally allowed me to watercolor! (And feel good about it!) So, on a side note, is there anyone else who can't watercolor with the crayons?
