How big is the matchbox? I love 'altering' matchboxes and have made a lot for gifts/stocking stuffers. If you reply to this re size I can offer you some ideas I've used in the past.

Maybe you could store earrings or small jewelry?
Matches (decorate to match a candle if you're giving it as a gift?)
When your child turns 16, you could give him/her a car key inside it?
I purchased the die to use to make gift boxes for Key rings I am making for Christmas gifts. You could also use it as packaging for say bottle cap pins,

Reason: typos
Not sure of the size of the matchbox diecut you're referring to, but here are a few things you may like to try:
Emergency Kit (can be used to keep in glovebox of car, purse, school bag, for college student, travel, etc.): bandaids, small sewing kit or needle and thread, safety pins, small scissors or mini craft knife, postage stamps, tiny post-it note pad, pen or pencil (cut a pencil down to size) headache pills, rubber band, small cello tape, etc.) I'm sure there are lots of tiny things that could be included.

Wow, thanks for all the good ideas! The die I am referring to is the SU Matchbox Die. I was looking for cute gift ideas that wouldn't include candy as some of my friends are dieting or try to avoid sugar. I cut some little notes and stamped them with the words "inspire", "discover", etc and made the sliding lid for the matchbox out of acetate. Wrapped it with rafia and a matching tag and it looks really cute.
You can also you them for different jewelry things, including men's tie clip/cuffs. If you alter it a bit you can fit gift cards, I put magnets, used it for small embellishments, fishing accessories. I plan on making some to put my Cub Scout awards in when I give them to the boys. I've seen a really cute mini album made out of one too that I just have to try soon.
