Default What type of software for creating SVG's?

Hi All,
I've been kicking around the idea of creating my own SVG files. Not just 1 or 2D items, but for 3D items like gifts, boxes, packaging etc.... What type of software would I need to create these?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
Hugs,
Melanie

I know a lot of people use INKSCAPE, which is a free downloadable software. If you have one of the digital cutters, like a Silhouette, the software with it should allow you to do it too.

Inkscape, Illustrator, Corel Draw, Serif DrawPlus (both Starter Edition and Full) all have the native ability to export drawings as svg files. Inkscape & Serif DrawPlus Starter Edition are free (although Serif will have some features greyed out unless you have the full version). If you can find an older (1.9 or 2.0) version of the Silhouette Studio and have a registration key for the Designer Edition of the software, you can "save as" svg files in SS, but it has to be the designer edition of an older version.

Hope that helps...

I know this isn't part of this topic, however, can someone help me out?
I'm a newbie with my Silhouette Portrait & the basic software that comes with it. Up until a couple of days ago, the only cutting files I've used are the ones I purchased from Silhouette America. A couple of days ago I purchased some downloadable SVG files from a different site. That site stated these could be used with the Silhouette. But I can't get my Silhouette software to open them or download them into the library. I haven't had a chance to work with them any since the day I purchased them. Should I just go back to the site I purchased them from for advise?
Thanks!

Cookie1031, I think you'll probably get a lot of help with this, if you go back to the main page, click on the TOOL & PRODUCT Talk section, then look for the SILHOUETTE & CAMEO Chatter sticky at the top. There'll be a lot of users there who can advise, I'm sure.

Unfortunately, you can't open or import svg files into the basic Silhouette software - you need to upgrade to the Designer Edition in order to use svg files with the Silhouette software. There is a work around where you open your svg in a program like inkscape, and then you can export it as a dxf file which can then be opened in SS.

There is a lot of info and tips on how to use both of these software together in the sticky thread and you can also check out UK Scrappers. There is a ton of people on there that have a lot of experience with this that are more than willing to help.
