I am SO addicted to backgrounds . . . I have 5 on my next dream list order. Am I crazy, do you think they will ever go out of style? I am just so in love with the texture and dimension they add to cards. What do you think, should I calm down my love of these stamps?

I think like with anything else there are different styles... I am sure in 5 years we will look back and say that the designs on the backgrounds are so 2005 just like if you look at the old SU cattys there are some dorky sets in the like the 1999 ones..
Order your sets enojy them and if ya get bored with them trade them for something more "up to date"
backgrounds will never go out of style-- thats my story and i'm sticking to it since i'm up to 15 background stamps - my personal crusade is to stamp out naked cardstock!!!

I don't NEARLY have enough backgrounds. So far, only Canvas, Print Pattern, Fine Lace (it's on it's way), and On the Spot! I REALLY want French Script and Weathered. Better make my list for Santa

I have 8 BG's so far and I don't care if they go out of style - I love them and I'll keep using them (ESPECIALLY my Print Pattern - LOVE love LOVE that BG )
I dont know how many I have...lets see... canvas, just jeans, soft swirls, on the spot, paisley, paisley something or other!, print pattern, stiple plaid, floral and a french script one ... I think that is all.. and I hope they never go out.

I think the backgrounds are the LEAST likely to out of style. Some of the more trendy ones, perhaps, but who can think that harliquin backgrounds will go out of style. That design has been around forever. Backgrounds are my favs. I say, love em.
I particularly love the trend of layering two or three backgrounds...

I think one of my first SU stamps was a background stamp, like 8 or 9 years ago! I use them for clay projects as well, they are so great for texturizing. I can't see them ever being "out of style."

I, too, love backgrounds! But I have discovered that some backgrounds are "fadish" and lose their appeal after several years....the one that comes to mind for me is the old Ivy vine background that I had to have years ago. I used it for a couple of years and now it just looks "yuck" to me. I really don't think the texture stamps, like Canvas, or Crackle will ever get dated looking because they are natural and not stylized designs -- does that make sense? ;)
Of course, just because something "might" go out of style several years down the road doesn't mean you shouldn't get it now. Enjoy it and when you tire of it, sell it or bless someone else with it at that time.
Background stamps are one of my weaknesses, so it might be best to ignore my advice because it's rather biased!
Yea, background stamps! Love 'em. Seeing all the beautiful cards in the gallery with background stamps has made me love them even more. Just got 2 new ones, bringing my total to 19! Plus there are 5 more on my wish list. I so agree about "stamping out" (tee hee) naked card stock. Styles may change, but some backgrounds are classics. Like how did we ever get along before the Canvas stamp?! That one is a "must have".
ohhhh sharon - so glad to hear someone else has more BG's than me -- however there are still several more i'd like to get - i agree that canvas may be the most versatile BG -- i was in love with bazzill paper before this stamp, i loved the texture, but disliked the uneveness of the stamp image you would get -- canvas came along and i was in heaven! great texture look and evenly stamped images --- every card needs a background stamp! don't let your cardstock go out into the world naked !

Good, I definitely can see that some may go out of style due to fads and such, but BOSS is right, no need for that to take something off my wish list now! Thanks for the affirmation of my background addiction.

Thanks for this inspiring post. I read it and it has challenged me to not have naked cardstock. Oh yeah, and I ordered Print Pattern and I'm considering Just Jeans.
Counting the one on its way I have 9 and I am wondering if I "need" more.
Hope this isn't too much of a hijack--but I just got Canvas and haven't used it yet. Do you stamp the Canvas BG FIRST, then your image over it--or stamp your image first, then Canvas over it (assuming you are putting image and BG on the same layer)? If I need to start my own thread on this, let me know.
I only have a couple of BGs--but definitely see the need for more!

I love Ivy!! UI have only been stamping 18 months and am addicted to backgrounds. I bought a lot of retired onbes on eBay (inc. Ivy !!) and am well on my way through the current ones. I have about 20 with 2 more on my wishlist. I have to say that canvas and floral are probably my current favorites.

For those of us who love background stamps, how many also bought Wonderful Weaves? I haven't bought it yet because it was so small. It seems like it would be right up my alley though. Anyone else?
Love the BG stamps, but there are also stamps like Itty Bitty Backgrounds that can be used for that purpose to get a different look. I have also used the main stamp I am using for the card (such as Shapes & Shadows) and stamping the same color ink as the cardstock before I put on my layers. There are all kinds of possibilities.

Funny, I placed a good size order w/ myself last week (hobby demo, needed another $150 by the end of the month) - including French Script, Happy Birthday Greetings and Fine Lace (I have On The Spot, Canvas, Geometric, Stipple Plaid, Filigree already in my collection), but then I added Wonderful Weaves. I will be cutting the rubber this afternoon and I am sure christening it soon after. The images themselves are 1 3/8 x 1 3/4 - I think it will be cool.
edit - And after I wrote this I visited the Wonderful Weaves Gallery - it needs more than 16 samples! One great idea that I did see was using them for the Kissing Technique!
Never! They are like cute purses! They make the outfit!
I have about 18 and my mom has a few more of mine at her house!
The retired ones that I can't let go of are the chicken wire, the World Map, Highways and byways (I haven't used it yet, but my kids are just now getting old enough to travel so I'll use it in a SB page one of these days!), Musical Score, the older crackling one, filagree, paisley (I'm still in mourning over the loss of that one!)
I could go on and on, but I really need to go stamp! The kids are busy playing with their new toys and they'll leave me alone to stamp and scrap!
Vera
PS, don't even get me started about my shoe collection! My pointy-toe boots might go out of style, but they are just too cute and they make my legs look longer!
I got wonderful weaves on this last order and love it! it is great as backgrounds, it doesn't take much to cover the page with it either. very nice set. My mom said she never even thought of that one as a background stamp set, but I love it. I also got canvas on that order, want to get just jeans, lithograph, and print pattern and word by word. I also have script and one other old one. Does anyone have cheesecloth? do you like it? thanks!

Do you have any sets in mind to use it with? Every time I look at that I can't help but to wonder what it would look good with.
I have just under 30 background sets. I did buy print pattern even though it closely resembles the one they retired last year. Creates a different look that the other couldn't.
When I first saw SU, I kinda ignored the background stamps, but you can bet that all my favorite cards have a b/g stamp on the card somewhere, I think it really does make the difference between a nice card and an exceptional card. So, I think that I will be adding a large number of b/g stamps to my order.
I too love the look of 2 or 3 b/g stamps layered together, the textures are fab!
At least we're all in this together! I'm working on getting ALL the backgrounds, have tons of them now. I think there's always a way to use them so the older ones look more up to date. Of course, look at all the vintage and retro stuff--nope, even if you get tired of them they'll never go out of style!
he'll look at stuff and say, 'man, that needs a background stamp!'
That's TOO funny! Backgrounds is one of the few my husband doesn't complain about because they are such a great value, & I have like 17 or 18 of them, I think?
No, backgrounds have never really been "all the rage." They've been a steady friend, always there in the... well... background, LOL!
I still own retired background stamps that I continue to use - mostly on personal cards to give or cards I make to sell.
Backgrounds I still use: Handstitched, Filigree, Old World Map, the road map one (don't remember what its called), VineYard, Script, Paisley (of course) and a bunch others.
I just ordered and received the Crosshatch last week.
I love backgrounds. I've sold some retired sets throughout the years, but I can't seem to part with my background stamps.
I do not have any background stamps...:( To remedy this I took regular cheesecloth and wadded it up, dab it on my stamp pad and did a really nice background. It turned out great and I made some really nice cards with my Sage Advice stamp set....wow! I am still working on my supplies but its sure fun doing it!
I love BG stamps. It was my goal to have all of the BG stamps in the current catalog before year-end. I did it with my birthday order last week. I have several of the retired BG sets also, just can't seem to part with any of them.
I also bought Wonderful Weaves but right now it is MIA  , time to clean up my stamping area again.
