Xyron Help....should I buy one?
Michaels has a 50% off any one item coupon in the paper today. I was thinking about using on the Xyron 850. Before I do...I would like to hear your thoughts and suggestions for using it!
TIA,
Elisha
I don't believe they make the Xyron 850 any more? I would advise you go with the 900, if you want one that large. I love mine and it's so handy when I need it for certain projects (I have a really hard time with spray adhesive fumes . . . :( )
I like to use it for
converting whole 8 1/2 x 11" sheets of c/s into "stickers"
laminating same size to create simple board games or book covers
applying sheets of suede paper to heavier weight c/s, prior to cutting into things like boxes, etc.
applying glitter or acetate to acetate or card stock pieces

Great question because I was wondering the same thing. I'm itching to spend my 50%off coupon! I was wondering how much I would use it and exactly what for. I read on the package of the one I was looking at (I believe it was the 510 (smaller one) that you could use it on ribbon also.
I must confess to owning 3 Xyrons . . . the old no longer mfg. 850 (but you can still find/buy the refill cartridges for that model at Michael's and elsewhere), the 550 (? can do everything the big ones do, but on smaller scale, and I use that one for ribbon, strips of c/s, etc.), and the 150 (X shaped, to use with my punch outs--I hate to waste any of the bigger cartridges on little tiny things, so when I don't have a lot to put through at one time, that X has come very in handy!)
Gee, mebbe I like Xyron just a little, eh?! ;) ROTFL!

But, I can justify ownin' 'em! I dunno how many other tools I've purchased thinking I had to have them and they sit, unloved gathering dust, whereas my Xyron's get used all the time!

I'm another one, like Julie, who loves my Xyron! I have two...the 550 and the 150 (or X).
Changing the cartridge is pretty easy...just pop one out and pop the other in. It takes about a minute.

I've heard that it is really good to use to adhere vellum to your card stock if you are using a verse for the inside or whatever. Which model would you recommend for that? I'm still struggling with whether or not I should get this myself! Glad to find this thread this afternoon.
If you'll only be doing cards, the 550 is a good size and not very costly. It will laminate, and you can buy a magnet cartridge, too. I also like the X machine for doing small things.

I am a fellow xyron addict. I had the 850 but since they were discontinuing it, I had to get the 900 and then got the little 150, just because its so darn cute. The 850 was a pain for alternating cartridges but the 900 is awesome. The cartridge lifts right out and I can switch whenever I want.

I must confess, I'm not sure what this machine is or does. I hope I don't get laughed off of the forum, but I just never investigated this. Thanks for any explanations!

Xyron is a company that makes standard adhesive runners as well as adhesive machines that allow you to apply unlimited lengths of permanent or repositionable adhesive to standard widths of a medium such as cardstock, vellum, or ribbon. There are different models of the machines, the names of which indicate the width the machine accommodates. The Xyron 150 allows materials up to 1.5" wide to be passed through it, and adhesive is applied to one side of the material. The 200, 500, and 900 allow for 2 inches, 5 inches, and 9 inches respectively.
Some of the models have different cartridges that can be inserted so if you want to do more than just apply adhesive, such as cold lamination or adding a magnet backing.
Thank you for the explanation and the website. It really helped me to decide which one I want to get as well. I think the Louisville Regional has sent everyone scurrying to get a Xyron. I hope there are some left at Michael's today. LOL
I just bought the 500 at JoAnn's last week, they were on sale for 50% off and now I can't stop using it. I think I've stuck everything in my house together. I am really liking it for sticking backgrounds that are not quite flat to the cardstock, then the edges don't lift!
I just got the 250 & I'm coloring up images & making them into stickers like crazy. It will be nice to have a head start on making cards. Seriously, this is a great tool!
I just bought a Xyron 510 2 hours ago with my Michael's 50% off coupon.
It came with 3 tester size cartridges - permanent adhesive, 2 sided lamination and laminate magnet.
I'm really excited about experimenting with it.

i bought the xyron 250 and love it for ribbon.........if you aren't going to tie a knotted piece on the ribbon, having adhesive ribbon is SO awesome - no more glue dots coming off
