For all No Cal Gals - I would much appreciate your input:
There is a brand new community center just down the street from me here in Livermore. I would like to rent a room for the event and there is a choice of room sizes, but the cost would have to be divided by the number of attendees. For example, a room that would hold about 45 people would be $200. If we had 40 participants that would be $5/person, with fewer people the cost goes up. A smaller room might be possible, too. We could include the cost of a lunch (sandwich or salad) from a deli, maybe another $7? Does this sound reasonable to you? Please be honest with me, I appreciate all opinions.
I have looked at threads of other get togethers and they include shoe box projects, garage sales of unwanted stamps/supplies, make n' takes, games, contests, door prizes (supplied by the participants or included in the cost of attending). What sort of things or activities would you be interested in? I'm open to all suggestions and any experience you can share.
Oh, one more thing, weekend day only or would a Friday be okay for you?
thanks,
~ Kathy

Hey Kathy,
I bet I could get a few of us to from Castro Valley and San Leandro to attend. I am surprised you didn't tell us you were planning this. Sounds like fun.
I'll send a pm as well. I wouldn't mind attending and paying a small fee. I'm in Concord, so not too far up 680. Weekends only work for me since I'm at work 10 hours a day and traffic is miserable on Friday nights.
Hello,
I will be sending a PM, too! I am in San Mateo, but would totally be willing to drive to the event if it was across the Bay. I was supposed to go to the Southern California event earlier this month, but my plans changed at the last minute.

Surprise! You found me out, Heehee. I was going to talk about it when we get together on the 23rd, Lynn. You bet I'm counting on the Castro Valley Coven to be there! We are such a fun group.

Hello again,
I sent some suggestions to Kathy and she thought it would be a good idea if I posted them here as well so that everyone else could see them. I think it would be great to have the event include a shoebox swap - each person attending could bring a project (that takes about 10 minutes or less to complete) with enough supplies for 10 people to make. Depending on the number of participants, it might not be possible to complete every shoebox project, but each person would certainly get to do a specific number. The project could be as simple as a card, or perhaps a 3 dimensional item. I think it would also be great to have an optional card swap for those that want to participate. Some other ideas include door prizes (each person could bring a hand-stamped item to contribute so that everyone has an opportunity to win something). Most of these ideas are taken from the So Cal Stamp Mania event - although I didn't end up attending, these are some things that they had planned. Their event always seems to be successful, so why not follow an awesome lead?!
Let's hear what others think!

Good point about our wonderful Bay Area traffic. Okay, will pick a weekend day.
May have to go over to the Rec Center soon, they book up for weddings and other events. It's a beautiful, one year old, state of the art complex. I'm so lucky I can just walk over there. And... there are two pools (one with a two story twisting slide), so if you have kids you could let them play there while you play inside. (Kids would need to be either old enough to be independent for half the day or have someone watching them. There is excellent lifeguard coverage.) Sorry, no kids in our stamping event.

I was going to say, this "planning" is literally only a few days old, that's why nobody heard about it yet.
But I'm THRILLED that you are all hearing about it so quickly.
If many of you will add something in your signatures, the word will get out even more, whatever forum you are posting in. I'm mostly in Current Events, but others frequent different forums. Just copy one of the others!

I'm closer to Santa Clara than that other Kathy. Visiting or business?
We have a great amusement park that's a 10-15 min. drive from me. (Paramount's Great America)
I hear great america has a water park now.. I spent every summer there when i was a teenager. Wish there was a water park than!
Aw bummer, August i'll be in Florida, September in Germany. Maybe next year!
Please add me to the list. I am in Central Cal., but I am happy to drive. I wanted to go the SoCal event, but the date didn't work for me. A weekend date would be my first choice, but I wouldn't count myself out if it was a weekday event.
I love the shoebox make-n-take idea. I also saw that the SoCal group did a name tag contest. That seemed really fun.

Money may not buy happiness, but it buys stamps, which makes me happy!
I have decided it will be a weekend day (someone reminded me of our Bay Area traffic during the week, which I havent' had to deal with since leaving my job in November). Would you mind letting me know what city you're coming from, pm me for privacy? I'm thinking that people could get together to carpool, but I would not share that information unless there is mutual agreement.
Yes, I saw the photos in the gallery with the name tags from the recent SoCal event, love the idea of a contest for that, so it is on my list of things to do. Chrismarra613, who had also planned to go to the SoCal event, has volunteered to organize the swap portion of our get together.
I'm zeroing in on August - we will have the new catalog to talk about! I know that seems far off, but hoping that means people won't have any other conflicting plans yet that far out.
thanks,
~ Kathy

I would be interested in this also. I am in Fremont. I think my downline might be interested as well. Can't wait to get more details!! Ohhh...there is a new scrapbook retreat place in Livermore that might be a good location. Here is the link: http://www.memorylanegetaways.com/

Hi Jennifer,
That must be really new, I've never heard of it! Sounds interesting, I'll have to check it out to see how many they can accomodate. Right now, I've been thinking of doing it at our fabulous new community center and renting one of the rooms there. We could do whatever we want and eat lunch there, too. Cost would not be very much divided by the number of attendees. I'm getting a very good response to this, considering I've only had it in the forum for a few days. Lots of Bay Area gals and even a few from a bit further away.
Oh, I just want to let the curious know, when I mentioned my group of stamping buddies in the Castro Valley "Coven", we are not witches as has been discussed in other forums, it's just a silly name we call our group because we are all under the spell of SU! heehee.
~ Kathy
I'm on vacation 4/16-20, so I may not be able to respond quickly to messages. We're going to Disneyland! Me, my son and two of his friends (dh can't take time off from work).
Am I brave? (or crazy?)

So happy to come across this thread! I've been hoping for a gathering in Northern Cali for a while now- good job Kathy!!
Glad to see it sounds like it'll be on a weekend. April is pretty much booked for me, so I hope it'll be in May or June.
I'll be coming from Bonny Doon :-).
Hi and welcome. Bonny Doon.... sounds idyllic. Oh I do understand, you wouldn't want to drive on Hwy 17 on a weekday! I'm focusing on August for the event because I wanted to leave enough time for people to put it on their calendar before too many plans are made. August will also give us the new catalog to talk about, more excitement. Will set the date in a week or two.
Looks like there is lots of interest in this event. I was just one of those standing on the sidelines looking at the other SCS events going on, and kept thinking how fun if we had one here. So, someone had to kick start it; I took the plunge.
thanks,
~ Kathy

Okay, I had to pull up a map, not living out here too many years. Bonny Doon is way up there! DH goes up 9 sometimes to Boulder Creek Scout Reservation, and Cheseborough Scout Camp, and you're even past those! Would you take 9 or 17 into the valley to get to Livermore??
Are you dealing with any slides these days??

As long as it isn't DH's birthday weekend, color me there. Heck, even if it *IS* his birthday weekend, I may STILL GO! How many of us that are looking at going are also attending Convention? I am.
Not too sure about this whole shoebox thing.... I am a SLOW stamper... I look at Take Ten and I haven't found a card I like yet that I can copy in 30 minutes, let alone 10! I can't seem to stamp a GIFT TAG in 10 minutes, so I'm not sure if I could play in that.... Hmmmm.....
And I agree with Samantha.... Friday traffic up the 680, especially for those of us continuing on to the 80 junction in Fairfield..... EEEEEWWWWWW!!!!!

Anybody else in Milpitas sit in traffic Thursday when the robbers were tossing money (and weapons) out onto 680 southbound? They CLOSED the interstate of course all the traffic dumped into Milpitas. ACK!

Lisa, I'm also clueless on the shoebox swap. Hopefully it will become clearer, and if it's still too much, maybe it can be optional.
I just asked DH how "dead" I would be if this fell on his birthday weekend and I went anyway.... he said, "well maybe I can go too!" HA! NOT! The only forum he fits into on this site is Current Events..... LOL!
His birthday is August 20th. We could always come down to his parents place Friday night and I can LEAVE HIM THERE and drive across into Livermore from Palo Alto too.....
If we could vote, I'd go for one of the earlier weekends, otherwise you start running into parents taking kids off to college, or school sports starting.
Is that an issue for anyone, or no? It really isn't for me.
