Default Punches-how do you store them...?

I have a TON of punches, and in my purging, they seem to be the one thing I will not part with..Well, I *have* given up a few, but the vast majority (so far) I have kept..

what do you use to store your punches...? The border ones, the small corner/shape ones, the larger hape ones...etc...

I know some ppl use those back-of-the-door-shoe-storage thing, and I did think of that...any other ideas...?

I have a sb friend who has like 4 of those 12x12 paper Iris containers that she uses to store her punches....they are the larger ones, probably 4-5 inches high; but, when she gets it full (and she manages to pack it to the gills!), it gets reallly heavy, and more than once the case has popped open on her when she has gone to pick it up to look through it, with all of the punches flying everwhere....:( I am not about to throw my back out to sort through my punches.....so there has to be some good ideas out there...

I did see a large laundrybasket/large pail thing...it is quite large, it would sit on the ground, and I am guessing a good 40-50 punches wold fit in that comfortably..it is quite large...or maybe a large basket in general...?

So far, I am leaning towards the over-the-door-shoe rack...

Ikea Bygel rails mounted on the wall (LOVE...wish I had room for more that the 8 I have...LOL), the wire basket that hangs off them, and plastic baskets to hold the flat punches. Sorry no photos but you should be able to search here and someone will have photos of thiers.

I use three types of organization for my punch storage.
Over the door shoe holders for my border punches.
Bygel rods and baskets for my old-style SU punches and smaller punches that don't fit on the rails.
A shelf on a making memories ribbon organizer thing where I stack my new SU flat punches.

In my old house I used the ikea rails, but didn't have any wall space left here...so I have tension rods in the side of my island for my larger old-style punches. The smaller ones are in drawers in an Iris cart...and the new style are stacked on a shelf.

I would make sure that whatever you decide to use, that they are all easily visible, in a basket or box you can't see what you have and will forget all about the hidden ones.

Cher, that is a very good point...
I love the look of the rails but see me ending up with punches flying all over the place when I try to take one down....
But they sure look awesome!!

I found this wall hanger in Michaels at 60% off. It holds the largest punches from Stampin Up and EKSuccess border punches too!

They had a section on closet storage items. Last time I looked, they had some similar ones but couldn't find the same one with the pockets. They had some that had zipper pockets. I think they were clearing out, but not sure if all Michaels are doing that are not. My Michaels is also rearranging almost the entire store so I will have to go up and wonder around a while to figure out where everything is now! It's all good because I find things I didn't know were there now!

Thanks, Kathy..yep, my Michael's is re-arranging, too..
In some ways I am excited, in other ways, it looks like they are dropping items I used to get often, like those little gems that were $1.99.. :???:
But it's a sign of the times.. ;)

I looked around both times I went up this week but didn't see those hangers. They still have some of the closet items so I am assuming they are selling those out and maybe not restocking. Now I wish I would have bought two, but usually when I buy more than one of something, I wonder why I bought so many! Like those little squeeze bottles of puffy paints. I have at least a dozen in all different colors because you can drip a dot on cards and they dry puffy. So I figured I needed all those colors for all different papers. Have only used the white and black mostly! I am purging and trying to do better. I have four of those cat eye chalk sets...now I just use my SU inks and Ranger Distress inks for edging cards.

I used to use an over the door hang up - but got too many punches! Found a small three shelf rolling cart - the old style punches fit around the edges of the shelves. Smaller punches and new style fit in the baskets. If the punch does "fall" it tends to fall into the basket. I love it!

Let see if this works. This is really close to what I have...

I use the top sides of each basket to "hang" my punches on

Those of you that have the Bygel rail system, how far apart did you mount them to easily get the punches on and off the rail?

I have a kitchen rack/shelf from IKEA in stainless steel that has 6 bars in depth and it is perfect to place all sizes of punches on them. What I like best about this is that the rack/shelf is mounted to the wall above my desk, so it is within reach, something that hanging them in a bag over a door doesn't do for me. It also houses 3 different manufacuturers punches, Marvy, Martha Stewart, SU, from GIGA to small corner rounder. I have 38 punches with room for a few more.

I use a clear over the door shoe storage thing and it works great. I have multiple small punches in one pouch and the larger ones have their own. I used to have a fabric one, but I like being able to see what is in it and the clear one works better.

Thanks, Indy_Patti..I actually was just looking at one of those very same wheelie things the other night, that I have sitting empty, in the basment.....wondering how I could use it to store punches...;) too funny....great minds think alike, eh..? ;)

some really great ideas all around...I think the safest bet for me is the over-the-door shoe tree thing...;)

Thanks, all!

I use the Bygel rails also. I've never had a problem with any falling off when I take out a punch, as they hook over with the paddle part of the punch and rest against the wall. I can't even imagine how they'd fall off.

The larger flat ones fit on there the same way if you don't lock them, and all the rest go into the baskets that hang from the rails.

That is a fabulous rack!!! I have Bygel rods but this would be even better because you get more punches in the same length of space!

I used the cheap gold colored curtains rods from wal mart like the kiea rails...They are the cafe rods....I bought a little longer ones so I could stretch them for my length...and they have center support brackets because those punches put a lot of weight on them...they work for me....wish I had a bigger space to put all of my punches up like this, though.

I just measured mine and I have 8" between the bottom of the top rod to the top of the rod that is below it. That fits the purple Marvy jumbo/mega (whatever they are) punches. Some punches (like SU!) hang down lower so 8" gives you enough room to account for all punch hanging levels, I think.

Mine are currently in an shoe organizer over the door hanger (bought at Canadian Tire), I have a couple. In the pouch I also have a stamp & store case that holds extra punch pieces. System is not as compact and neat as some above but it Seems to work great fro me so far.

You never know I may change my system, therer are great ideas in this thread, some I have never seen before.

Question

How does everyone store their new style compact SU and EK Success punches?

I've found that they fit really well into a Super Satchel Double Deep ArtBin container. It can fit 32 XL punches. I have 22 XL, 7 LG, 3 Med, and 5 Small in mine; and I have room for 2 more XLs.

These bins are great, especially since they just slide into the Super Satchel Cube for storage. The cubes are a bit pricey for what they are, but it is worth it for the ease and flexibility of the storage of the Super Stachel bins.
The bin does get a bit heavy. So, I'll have to see how well the cube's plastic rails hold up to the weight. The rails look pretty soundly engineered, therefore I am hopeful. If nothing else, I can just set this bin on the bottom of a cube instead of on the rails.

I've included pics of the inside of the bin, and a view of the cubes (please don't mind the mess, since my craft room is very low on floor space, I had to assemble the cubes in our dining room {my husband's project area), and haven't gotten them moved into the craft room just yet, since it is in a state of rearranging caos).

Here are the pics:

I have some of my punches in an over-the-door hanger. I have the smaller punches & new style punches, MS punches, and border punches in photo storage boxes. My old-style SU! punches are either in a wooden box and a wire silverware tray.

I want to get more of those silverware trays (found the one I have at Goodwill) to store all of my SU! punches. I think it is much neater than storing them in the wooden box & I should be able to stack them up.

I used to use one of those wire pantry organizers that's designed to hang on the inside of your pantry door. It worked well, but didn't have enough shelves/baskets. Now I have a few plastic storage bins (Itso trays--deeper than these from Target) that sit on my wire shelving. They're a jumbled mess inside the bins, but because each bin is small, it isn't an issue. I have them separated by type: borders, round, square, fun shapes, etc.

A big heavy rectangular low basket. Some are hooked on the sides and back too. I like to re-purpose things.

I use the 12x12 plastic IRIS boxes - but not the deep ones - mine are only about 2" deep. I put a layer of that rubbery shelf lining in the bottom of the box to keep the punches frojm sliding around "quite" so much. And just insert one layer of punches. I used my label maker to number each of the boxes. Then I punched out a "sample" of each punch and glued it into my index book (though you could just frame a larger piece of cardsstock and hang it on the wall), and next to each sample punch, wrote the number of the box in which the punch is stored.

This is a good idea with the sample index, since for me, out of sight usually means out of mind!

I went and bought one similar to this at Walmart but my punches keep falling in. And unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess I could say!) it only holds about 1/4 of my punches.
I'm still in search of a better way for me, and in the meantime I'm sure I will find another great use for this little cart!

NoraAnne

I wish I could post a photo for you. Mine fall in too, if I orient them the wrong way. I hang the punch so that the punch end is pointed to the inside middle. I have all my circle punches on one side of the top basket, squares on the other side, small ones in the middle in the basket.
2nd shelf holds my coordinating ovals, hearts, stars...
3rd holds all my label punches.

Now - these are all the lever kind of punches. I have the new slimline style in a different basket!

I use clear over the door show hangers. I love it. I can see them at a glance.

I used one too, before I got too many punches!
