I like the 6x6 because it allows me to stencil a directional pattern either portrait or landscape. If I want a border around the stenciled area I just mask off the area I don't want stenciled.

Try massaging the pads with the back of a spoon and working the ink back into the pad. I've never had an issue like this and I've had most of my pads for at least 3 years.
