Default My opinion

WOW!!!
This seems to be a touchy subject either way. First let me say that I just signed up for the newsletter just to see what all the hype is about. Second I know I've gotten alot of great ideas from this site!
I sent a message to Beatte and she let me download her alphabetical list "with samples" to try and share with others. She said thats what she does them for and she was happy that I asked first even though I "didn't have to.";) (Thanks, Beatte)
I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. It cost me $18.00 for the year. (6 issues) I'm just curious because you can download the alphabetical list for FREE and then do a search on here. That way no-one is violating any copyright laws.
Thanks for letting me express MY opinion. I helped Pat and got ideas "free". It was a win, win for me.

Default WOW!!!

I just have to say that after reading all the input about sharing....................I joined the technique junkies and I must say it was well worth the money.
Thanks for the comments that led me to Pat's site. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for new techniques.
Splitcoast is awesome with sharing all they know so I would recommend Pat's site as a backup. (I love Bette's work)
Thanks,
Kelley

Cool another thought

don't we pay to get into the Fan Club? We value the extra from Splitcoast and can't just send a link to someone else!
Pat CLEARLY states that "no one owns techniques" it is just that she puts it all together on beautiful glossy paper in a six page newsletter. We are encouraged to share ideas with others one on one and even have a yahoo group to post our creations. We just don't give the whole spread away we reference the newsletter > I mean really who would buy the milk if the cow were free hee hee

This should help even more. I think this is what is being described and argued about by everyone. I thought this was a site to help people out in the scrapping community where people make friends and connections. Good grief people!

Thanks for the link!
I took a class in which we did our backgrounds in the alcohol splash - years ago. Drop ink from the reinker onto glossy paper and then tip paper to let them run. Don't use too much or the colors will make a dark muddy mess. If you want a lighter effect - less drops and a light mist of water. Use it as a background paper or stamp your iamge on it and cut out.

Just a quick comment to the thread: what she can copyright is the presentation of the tutorial. It would be wrong/illegal to post info directly from the newsletter. However, unless the technique is patented, I don't think anyone could stop someone from using their own words to present it.

I'm not a lawyer or anything, just know enough to be dangerous.

Whether sharing the info is ethical or not is another matter. I can see folks who subscribe not wanting to share (again, in their own words) and that's completely up to them.

Thumbs up

I don't believe her techniques are copyrighted but I would think her examples could be.

However, I do subscribe, I got all the CD's and found them an invaluable source of ideas. And by the way, it wasn't cheap (but worth it). If I decided to copy the information on the CD's that would definetly be illegal. If I were to teach someone that technique, I am recreating something of my own.

By the way, I think Pat knows we use her ideas, which are not all hers. I think JanTink and others from SCS has submitted ideas to her newsletter. You will also see some of Beate's tutorials are from her newsletter. Now which came, first Pat or Beate? I don't think it matters because each one recreated the technique using there own creative genious. By the way, I am so thankful for all of the creative juices that flow from both sites.

For those that do not subscribe to Pat's Newsletter, and you are someone that purchases paper craft or stamping type magazines at Walmart, I would suggest you stop, save your money and subscribe to the newsletter so that they can afford to keep doing what they are doing. The same goes for supporting this web-site.

I just ran across this thread and would like to clarify a few things. Below is a direct quote from the monthly e-mails we get from Pat, the owner of TJs.

I can tell you in my own words that to do the technique you use alcohol reinkers or ink. Use glossy card stock. Dribble your choice of colors on the paper, tilting if you wish, then drying with your heat gun. Use the background you made under your image or stamp directly on it and cut out and mount.

Sometimes when you share with your own words, the end result is that the person receiving the information is encouraged and believes the information you receive from your newsletter is worthy and they end up subscribing themselves.

For me.......I ended up canceling my $30/year stamp magazine subscription because I feel I get more out of my $18/year newsletter PLUS the small kudo you get when you refer people to Pat. ($1 per person). When you submit your own technique to the newsletter and it gets published, an extra issue is added to your subscription. For the newsletter price (which is equal to about ONE SU stamp set) you have a TON of ideas. BUT.....if you feel that you receive enough input from the Weekly Inkling then don't bother.

Just my 2 cents........no flaming please.......I LOVE both places!! :-)

__________________________________________________ ____________

NO-ONE owns techniques. Contrary to what some people would like to
believe, a technique cannot be owned -- once a person picks up an
inkpad and stamps her own thing, it becomes hers (okay, no gender
discrimination, his, too).

BUT...

I do "own" my words. They are copyrighted. That means that if you
choose to share a technique, you must use a different way to describe
it -- you cannot take my choice of words (the directions) in whole
or in part, and copy them for other people (or retype them for other
people). You can take the words, rephrase them so that they are
different, and use them.

I do this newsletter to SHARE the techniques. You pay me for the
time for researching them, trying them out, figuring out how to
explain them, writing the newsletter, printing the newsletter
(believe me, most of the money goes to printing and mailing!) and
creating/updating the website. If you looked hard enough, you could
find 85% of the techniques elsewhere. They are not MY techniques.

Please share when you feel it is appropriate! Don't feel
uncomfortable about it...Use the techniques in workshops, teach your
friends, share your art on other groups! Just don't use my
words,Don't photocopy the newsletters, and don't give anyone the
passwords.

If you are pleased with the newsletter and it's contents, let other
people know where and how you learned the technique, and send them my
link! I appreciate all of the referrals I have received

Excellent, Ann. This certainly clears up any controvery about what can or cannot be said about this technique or any other. I'm pretty sure I am going to subscribe to Pat's newsletters. I'm just not sure if I want the printed copies, or her on-line subscription that she also has. It costs a little less, and you have access to all her back issues. I can't recall if you then have a different subscription rate for the future issues. I like that type of subscription because I can print out any techniques that I want to currently use, and just keep the rest on file in my computer.

If you e-mail Pat, she will promptly answer back. She's definitely a great lady!

Remember to tell Pat the name of the person who first directed you to her as they will get a $1 credit towards their subscription. As to your subscription questions, I'll let Pat answer them!! :-)
