I drilled holes on the side of the glass block towards the bottom. If you look at the pictures you can see where the light string is coming out at the bottom, if that helps for a visual, lol.
I drill on the side because I make double-sided blocks.
Thanks!! I see where it's at now!!! For some reason I thought they were drilled in the back and then I thought, well that would screw up the double sided stuff....so thanks for clarifying, I was having a brain fart at the moment. Thanks again!!!

*You can use any type of paper. I used tissue paper and wrapping paper. I've seen printer paper that has been stamped used. The Fairy Paper I used is from England and you can order it here under Gift Wrap: http://www.flametreepublishing.com/StationeryHome.asp
I have all the Fairyland, Forest Fairies, and Neptune's Treasures papers. (If you want to see close-up individual pictures just let me know.)
These are just beautiful!! I love them!! Did you use the greeting cards or gift wrap? I love the cat one, but I can only find it in the greeting cards and not in gift wrap. Did you use the tissue paper and the image together on one block or on two seperate blocks. Thank you for sharing this, it is fantastic!!
I love this! Thank you so much for posting! Just one note - make sure when you buy your lights that there is not a plug on both ends -duh! I got a stand of 50 lights but can't get them into the block b/c there is a "female" plug on one end and a "male" on the other! Anyone know whwere to get lights this time of year? All I could find was a stand of 25. Thanks!
Where can you find the glass with the hole aleady in them?
Liz Moran
Sorry I didn't see this before. DH gets them from the company "Seattle Glass Block" I believe. These blocks are for the lighting so ask for blocks that you light up. I don't know how else to ask for them.

Since it's that time of year again - getting ready for holiday gifts! - I started working on my glass block lights. Thanks to this thread (and Mary's great instructions!)
Wanted to pass along a few tips I learned the hard way. Getting my sister's bf to drill the holes was the easy part. Cleaning the inside was a little harder. Of course I used a cleaning product. Soap bubbles *inside* the block! So... I filled the blocks with water until the bubbles came out the top, and proceeded to empty the water from the blocks. Process was wayyy too slow for me. So, I stuck a drinking straw in the hole (the straw is much smaller than the hole. and the water flowed! Cleaned up my 10 blocks (after I figured this out) in about 20 minutes.
Have fun with these. I can't wait to give them to my friends.
I had planned to make these over the summer but it never happened. Trying to figure if I can make time to make them in the next month or so. Thought I would bump this up for others who may have wanted to make them too.
Wow, so people have been having luck drilling through these things with a hand drill? DH can handle that if I spritz the water for him. Just making sure! These are so beautiful. I've been thinking of making them for a while but never thought about it seriously until now.

Mary - thanks so much for sharing the block lights! I ordered beads and sticky tape from pennywisearts, my drill bit from diamond drill and tool, and found lights at Target. I stamped on vellum and used Frosty on the front and Snowflake Spot/Snow Flurries on the back. Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Just bumping to keep my eye on these......I am taking a breather after making over 100 of them in less than 3 weeks, just before Christmas.
I had brought in one to work that I had made for Christmas of 2004 !!
Well, one girl saw then and wanted 2, took them back to her office, they wanted 2 or 3, and then it just took off like wildfire, I could NOT believe the interest in them......I already have several orders for this Christmas !:-D
these are so pretty! I would love to see a wedding one!!!
I did one with all clear lights inside - 50 string - and did all the bows in white or frost silver.....it was stunning....it DID look like a wedding gift, but this gal wanted it done that way for Christmas!
Your blocks are gorgeous! I did one last yr and burned up my $15 bit with just 2 blocks. Using the drill press and the diamond bit, how many blocks could you drill with one bit? Thanks.

Lowe's has a special bit that is for glass. I have done 8 with it and it is still useful.

I never did give anybody hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.
Just looking for clarification of the price of the blocks. Is it $4 for the whole case of 12 at Lowe's or is it $4 per block, making it about $48 for a case? I don't have a Lowe's near me, (yet, it's under construction - yay!), so when I looked on their website, it doesn't even list that size. When I checked Home Depot's website, they have the Pittsburgh Corning 6x8x3 Thinline case of 12 blocks for $56.86.
Even if it's $4 per block, it's a great price, I was just hoping it was $4 for 12, especially since I'm not eager to invest $50-60 (plus the other supplies) in something I haven't tried & don't know if I'll make many of them.
Anyways, if you could just clarify the pricing for me, that would be great - Thanks so much for your detailed directions. These are just beautiful & I would love to try my hand at making them!!

I tried to find a bit locally and was not successful - I checked Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, and every other place we could think of. No luck. So, I ordered the bit from the company in post #32. They shipped quickly and were reasonably priced. I also used the solution which we diluted in a spray bottle. DH drilled and I sprayed the solution onto the bit to keep it from overheating. We drilled 4 cases without any problem and the bit was still in fantastic shape.

The price is per block. :(
Pennywisearts.com is the place to go for the other supplies if you're going to make multiples [the mega roll of sticky tape and bags of the microbeads]. However, you can buy sticky sheets at Michaels or AC Moore for around $3 per pack of 2 sheets [it takes 4 sheets to make 1 double sided block] and microbeads [$1.99 per pack - I'd buy 2 packs] to make 1 block to see if you like the results. Hit Target early when they start putting Christmas lights out to get the white cord ones. There is a big difference (white vs green or brown).
I didn't use wrapping paper but stamped on vellum to create images.
They really do turn out pretty! [the photos don't do them justice]
Your lights are absolutely stunning. Hey, I'm just across the river. You might find me at your door one day to get some holes drilled! Thanks for sharing these with us!!!
