Hi all. I've been reading quite a few discussions about this, and I just have a quick question. Are these watercolor pencils we are talking about or regular colored pencils? I was all set to order the Prismacolor watercolor pencils, and then thought twice about it. Tks!

Whew! Glad I thought about it before I completed that order! It just dawned on me, now why would anyone need odorless mineral spirits to work with watercolor? Duh!

Just my $.02. I have watercolor pencils and I just bought regular colored pencils and mineral spirits. I love them both but I am CRAZY about the pencils and mineral spirits. I was finally able to get that great look that i haven't been able to accomplish with pastels, watercoloring with ink or pencils. It's easy and the results are FABULOUS! So if you're just going to get one I would get the regular pencils!

Thanks Amy. I already have some watercolor pencils (not stampin up) but I was thinking of getting the prismacolor since everyone is raving about them so much. I'm stoppin' at Michaels tonite armed with my 40% off coupon to see what I can find. Michaels has Prismacolor on their website, so maybe they have them in the local stores, too. Or, I might just look for the Crayola pencils. If they're good enough for LunarLana, then they're darned good enough for me!

You need to look in the artist/painting supplies for "100% odorless mineral spirits". I've seen 2 different brands of it at Michael's. I use the Houston Art Mona Lisa brand - it comes in a white rectangular bottle with blue & red writing and Mona Lisa's picture. Michael's also sells the Winsor & Newton brand, which comes in a clear glass rectangular bottle with a white label. Both of these should cost you no more than $4.00 and will do ya just fine.
I just bought my stumps, mineral spirits and now I'm sharpening my pencils. I hope to catch on to this technique, so I can start producing beautiful cards.
I went to a stamping show a few years back and bought the mineral spirits and stump and instructions for this technique and never used it. Mainly because I did not realize that I needed fancy pencils to use. Now after seeing all these posts I may swipe my kids colored pencils and give it a try. Thanks for sharing!!
Okay, things are making more sense to me now. But, what are stumps?????
I have been wondering the same thing. I went to Michaels to see how much their pencils were and to get the mineral spirits. I looked for something that was called a stump but could not find anything. please someone tell us what this is! :oops: :?
(BTW I am going to order my pencils from Viking, much cheaper to get it from them. I will settle for the 48 ct. for now.)
Michaels has the stumps in the watercolor pencil/colored pencil aisle. In my store the stumps are about eye level a bit farther down from the colored pencils. Near the erasers and other accessories for pencil and charcoal, pastel art stuff. They are fat pencil looking things apparently made of paper, the ones I saw were kind of grey. They were packaged and hanging up. I didn't get any yet but now I know where to find them.
When I do the Gamsol technique, I put the color where I want it to be darkest and then use the stumps to pull the color to the other areas.
By the way, the Pure Color Pencils are what convinced me to try this technique. Someone sent me a beautiful piece where they colored butterflies with the Pure Color Pencils and then covered them with microbeads. It's one of my favorites, but I packed it and I can't remember who sent it so I can give credit! :oops:

I've been playing with this technique since Sunday and LOVE IT!!! The Prismacolor pencils really have a more vibrant color than the SU! watercolor pencils or other colored pencils. I've tried all 3 and the Prisma really stood out. The stumps I found at Michaels were packaged several different ways. I bought a 'kit' and it was called a Pastel Accessory Set. It had a sanding pad, Blending Stumps which were solid - a fat one and a regular pencil size, Tortillions, which are similar to stumps, but they are hollow, a kneeded eraser (whatever) a white plastic eraser (has come in handy) and a Chamois cloth, which I doubt I will use, since it's mainly for pastels. It was around $12. The stumps also came packaged in groups - from 2 to 10 depending on what kind you were looking for, with varied prices of course.
You will need a piece of sandpaper too, because you have to sand off the color from the stump, before you go to the next color. Also, I've noticed, when coloring on US white CS, if you slightly dampen the CS with your stump before you put on your first pencil mark, the pencil mark blends even better. I was originally trying to make a pencil mark, then blend, but it works better if you have a little bit of spirits on it first.
It's a great technique and I've had a lot of fun playing with it. Enjoy!!!
For those who are first trying the Magic Colored Pencil technique w/ the Prismacolor pencils and the mineral spirits, here's another place to read about it. Michele on 2Peas has written an awesome tutorial complete with pictures and samples of every step along the way. She puts her mineral spirits in a plastic bottle with a dauber top - apparently used to do something with Bingo?! Anyway, I'd love to find one of those because I cringe at the thought of dumping the bottle over on my table! See the link below for Michele's thread on 2Peas.
For those of you who are demos, would you demo this technique? I'd love to, but I don't have the SU Pure Color Pencils and don't really want to buy them since I have the Prismacolors (I got a "deal" on Ebay a long time ago, but just now pulled them out to use them since this discussion started here on SCS - but my deal wasn't anything like you got on Viking!). Would it be bad to pull out the Prismas to demo this technique? I also have some Colorific colored pencils also made by Sanford (who makes the Prismas and they seem to work well too, not as well as the Prismas, of course, which are the BEST colored pencils in the world!).

Use the kneaded eraser to erase virtually any pencil marks; erase by moving it like any eraser or just sort of dab at the color. Knead it between erasings/dabs to eliminate (blend the pencil mark into the eraser) or one can smudge colors together with it. It's great to get into very small spots as one can mold it to any shape, even a point.
You only (k)need to use a small piece, maybe 1/2" sphere.
When it gets dirty (dark) just toss it away and pinch off a new piece.
I've not used another type of eraser since I discovered this type 15 years ago! And it lasts a long time.
You ladies are a hoot. After following your conversation I thought stump was a misspelling for "stamp" and I studied art :lol: . I can see were it takes some discussion before we all catch on.
I have used colored penciles for 30 years. PrimaColor is the best.
I can see were the mineral spirits would make the color even more vibrant, But doesn't the mineral spirits leave an oil spot on the CS??
