I have been sponging my dominoes with luminere. It gives a sparkly look and gives a little more surface for the ink. I stamp with Stazon and let dry for 24-48 hrs. You can color in with any permanent markers such as Fabrico. Spray with a sealant if desired.
If you are heading to target or walmart for your dominoes they are in the toy section, not the craft section. I read a note from one poor person who searched the craft aisle several times before leaving the store only to learn they were in the toy section
I was sure I had posted a reply a few days ago, but dont' see it now. My friend got my dominoes, the mini type, at the dollar store. There were 28 small dominoes in a carrying case. They were very nice, too! So you can also check out those places. That's a lot of dominoes to practice on. :shock:
Since the surface is a coated one, It needs something to hold onto the ink, whether it's StazOn or our permanent Black classic pad. Lumiere mixed w/pearl ex is great for this....so is gesso-found in the art section of michaels or hobby lobby or any art supply store.
I heard a great tip this weekend from a lady at the Rubber Stamp Expo in Milwaukee, WI. She throws her dominoes in a bucket of bleach overnight or for several hours. That will take the coating off the domino to allow you to stamp w/a permanent black and then color in w/colored pencils....Really pretty look to it, more subtle than coloring in w/other methods, like a paint pen or a sharpie.
I don't know what she sealed them with though- I forgot to go back and ask. Anything w/alcohol in it, or acetone, will probably make the StazOn run. There's so many in a box of dominoes that you could do different methods to test them out. Crystal effects does make StazOn run on Shrink plastic, so I assume it would on dominoes too....maybe just squoosh (technical term) it into a versamark and use Glassy Glaze EP to seal it,..........hmmmm experimentation time I see ahead of me!!
I made over 100 domino pins to trade at last years convention and it took no time at all, just made a mess w/sets all over, since I rarely stamped it the same each time. I did it in segments, so that I painted one day. the next day I stamped and still another day I sealed w/a brush on decopauge sealer. That way it at least had 24 hrs to cure and nothing ever ran.

I use Rubbing alcohol apply over domino before any stamping and This works great I then use the classic inks as a background and dry w/ heeat tool until Troughly DRY then use Staz on Back for image then Heat that TILL fuly dry Then I take a blender pen and remove all classic ink from inside image (tip lots of cleaning blender pen to get Classic ink off and so it dosent smear ) The Staz on Stays on cause its permanet so the blender pen wont rub this staz on off (unles you rub really Hsrd) ThenI use the stampin write to color image in and heat set this when done and then I apply a spray coat of clear sealer These are really nice I am making the following domino for my Mother/Dauther stamp camp Very easy for all ages and tons of fun!!! The mothers will make theirs into a pin and daughters will amke theirs into a magnet or vice-a-versa OH yea I also use the Ziggy paint pen the gold end to finish off the edges of my domino this just gives it the extra flash ENJOY!!
Also The many colors on this domino was applied with Daubers
( Mint melody, lovely lilic, pink passion, brillant blue and summer sun) all in classic ink pads Remember to heat set until fully dry
Some of the above mentioned techniques for stamping on dominos seem like a lot of work to me. I just sand mine a little with our sanding blocks (intended for use with the Polyshrink), stamp with StazOn and color with pastels or fabrico markers- depending on the look. I have not needed to wait long for StazOn to dry. I have sealed them with Matte Sealant by Plaid (found it at Walmart). I am careful to hold the sealant can away and spray lightly to avoid the smearing that others refere to- but as long as I'm careful this works (I usually do 2 or 3 coats). I have also sponged StazOn, stamped in various StazOn colors, etc. And, Crystal Effects has worked great to seal them as well. This is exactly the same way I do the Marbled Tiles too. I think I have a sample of one I'll try to post in my gallery.

If you need a reference, the typical size of pictures in the gallery is 640x480 pixels, or smaller. Our gallery software can care of this process automagically, the forum software doesn't.

These dominoes look awesome, I'd love to give them a try. I have a couple of questions though:
How do you turn them into jewelry? Do you drill holes, glue on findings, etc?
I am assuming you are using the backs of the dominoes to stamp on - what do you do with the side that has the dots on?

I do make mostly magnets and or pins BUT i have made a neckless out of one I used a big poly clay bead glued to the top of the domino and that holds the string or rope for neckless ( let the glue set over night to make sure of solid hold ) SO i try to keep away from drilling as much as possible. The side with the dots is where I apply the magnet or pin and the other side is the stamped image.. I also have 2 neckless on my web site you can check out I made them the same domino neckless for my daughter and her friend to be matching. With this bead i just picked one that was in the same color group some what ( I have tons of the poly clay beads for doing hair wraps in Hair for the ends w/ beads) you can find all kinds of beads at micheals and such..
