here is a good one I hadn't heard yet:

Line a clip board with aluminum foil. Then put your image to emboss under the clip portion to hold it steady. The foil will bounce the heat back to the image from the backside and emboss faster and more evenly.

I use aluminum foil also when I emboss. I just set my card on top of the foil and then heat it and it does emboss super fast!

This works great for Vellum. I use a clothes pin to hold my cards down, and they don't fly away, and my fingers don't get burnt. The vellum also doesn't roll up as much.

I have never heard of using foil, but I am going to try it tonight after our Christmas Program at school!

This is how I emboss, and it really makes a difference in how quickly and evenly the powder melts.

I've been embossing on a small cutting bord that I keep with my stamping stuff. I'm going to try lining it with aluminum foil.

I just use a piece of cardboard covered with foil...helps alot.

I love the suggestions about the foil to help heat the embossing quicker. I have a cutting board I use to protect my antique library desk and my husband frequently asks: "Where's my favorite cutting board? Has it gone to stamp world, too?"
A tip I have is: I was having trouble with my heat gun always sliding around and sometimes falling off when I set it down. I found one of those mats you use to set hot pans on or hold them, like a pot holder. I put it on the table and set my heat gun on it. It stays right in place. If I'm doing a big sponging job, I use it to set my ink pad on, so it won't slide around on the table. Love it!
