It's a thin sheet of a squishy substance available at craft stores!

It's thin foam sheets. You can get them at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnne's, etc. It's usually around the kids stuff - comes in lots of colors and some patterns. You can even get some adhesive backed. There are 2 thicknesses (is that a word?). It's very cheap, and it's on sale quite often.

I found a package of about 5 different colored sheets in the dollar section at Stop and Shop a few weeks ago! But when I opened the package, it smelled terrible--like chemicals. I am afraid to heat it! Is this normal?

After seeing a card made with the heated foam and then stamped, I was anxious to try this idea. I heated a small piece of red foam and stamped a heart......cut it out and used it on a card.....it was cute and added texture to the card. When I sealed the envelope, I used the extra heart I had made as a seal. (hoping that it would go through the mail) The person received the card so I guess I did not "clog" up a mail sorting machine somewhere in the USA...

When you say "big sheets," do you mean 8.5 x 11 (approx)? The foam can either come in multi packs or individually in sheets. I'm surprised the employee didn't know what it was. It's become very popular, especially for kids' projects.

Default fun foam

You can find the fun foam in the sheet form or also precut into shapes. Sometimes the shapes will be sticky on one side and you just remove the paper and stick it down just like any sticker. I’ve seen the precut in bags and also in buckets, tubs or whatever. It also comes in different thicknesses. A lot of dollar stores will carry them in the craft department and they may be thinner than what you’ll find in the craft stores. The thin type will emboss just as easily as the thicker. It’s kind of hard to keep it in one place when heating it so I put it in a stationary size cardboard box so it can’t blow away, heat it then slap a stamp down on it. If you didn’t like the way the stamped design came out just heat it again and the foam rises and the design almost disappears. Then you can stamp it again. If you want an all over design your stamp should be bigger than the foam since reheating it will change the first hit of the stamp. If you want it to stay in place when heating it just put a small amount of two way tape on the back before heating it or remove a tiny piece of the paper if it’s a sticker back.
Can you tell I’ve been playing with it? And just think last week before I saw a thread on this topic I didn’t know what to do with this stuff my sister in law kept giving me! (She didn’t know it could be embossed) Gotta love SCS!

If I use ink on the image do I need to spray it with something? I heated the foam, then used a heart stamp - the impression came out great but when I used a brillance pad to highlight the swirls it never dried. I tried to heat set but didn't want to heat too much or I'd loose the image. Even a couple days later it would still come off on my fingers. Any suggestions?

Likely it's in with the kids art supplies.

Wal-mart carries it in 8 1/2 x 11 sheets for $0.33 a sheet and it's open stock meaning you can pick what colors you want. They also have packages in 12 x 12 size, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 and 11 x 14 (?) when I was looking last night.

Like others said, Wal-mart carries lots of it in round plastic tubs that are already pre cut in shapes. Wal-marts is right beside the felt and it's called Foamies sheets by Darice.
