Try not to handle the paper/card too much as the natural grease from fingers attracts the powder.
If you haven't got an embossing buddy (I haven't) then a neat trick is to get some talc powder and put it in a cotton sock. Baby socks are fab as the size is convenient and rub it over the card/paper before stamping and sprinkling powder.
And of course a fine paintbrush is always handy as I think there's nearly always a couple of bits of powder. My problem is I get carried away trying to be a perfectionist and end up taking powder from the main image!
