First off, I must say that I haven't had time to play with wire nearly as much as I would like--I'm far from an expert. Having watched experts on the DIY channel and the like and dabbling myself, the key to it (from my perspective) is to have a tool that looks kind of like needle nose pliers but instead has two flat pieces of plastic that can "pancake" the wire.
Basicially all programs I have watched show the person forming the wire into general shapes or cursive letter making a phrase or name. At this stage, the wire barely looks like what they are creating. Then, they use this tool, and squish (such a technical term) the key areas of the wire that need to be close to define the word/shape (ie petals of the flower where the petals are close to the center, areas where letter lines are close to make the actual word--as you would write it).
Since I don't use wire much, I couldn't justify paying full price for this little tool (just me being cheap--as it is probably not that expensive relatively speaking). I just nabbed it at a store closing sale for a few dollars. I have tried it two times and been pleased with my wire results since.
