How to use the plaid maker

I just bought both sizes of plaid makers. I have tried to use them with my brayer but it did not look right. Then I tried sponges. That was not it either. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I use mine with the foam brayer and they turn out perfect every time. Are you using the foam attachment?
