I have purchased my Carl cutter at office Depot.com. I also had a $25.00 off coupon, so it was a good deal. Give it a try and you will get thos awesome coupon deals too.
I am dying to try it. I am going to do it now. wish me luck!!!!
I got it in the mail after I bought couple of small things. Try it. The cutter I have is the Carl cutter DC210. I love using it for stamp camps and invitations. I can cut up to 25 sheets at one time
Good luck. If I get another coupon soon, I will let you know and let you use it (There is only a promotion code that you need to enter)...
How weird!!!!!!! I just got an email coupon. It is for $20.00 off on a $75.00 order or more.

Everyone seems to be so excited about the journals that I wondered if someone might be able to post the directions from start to finish or post the link if someone has already done it. I'm interested in making a 6x6 size and am not quite sure of exactly where I need to use the bone tool, whether you must have large eyelets or the small ones will work, how you attach the spine to the matboard, what the spine is made of (cardstock?), etc. etc. Can someone help? I want to get in on the fun!!!
THANKS!!
I made on of these at the Scrapbook Expo in Austin. They called it a "memento book" and the class was sponsored by Pixie Press. They are supposed to be coming out with an idea book full of these soon. Instead of matboard, they used chipboard. It is thinner, but sturdy. Plus it is easy to find free - it is the stuff that is on the back of legal pads.
LOVE all the samples in the gallery...keep 'em coming!!
I get mat board at J**** Etc. or M*cha*l's -- in the framing dept. They always have scrap from larger frames that they've made or mistakes from same, and they sell them by sheet, very inexpensively. I think the last 8X10 I got was around 70 cents.

I have the same request as hionhim. I went to the website listed but didn't understand the directions. I would love to make one of these journals but wasn't sure what size eyelets to buy and how to cut and assemble the journal.
Someone posted about this before but just to make sure I have the instructions correctly...
Back piece is one big piece while the front is 2 pieces (small strip and larger front) that is held together by a piece of cardstock (so the front can freely flip open)
Well, I haven't joined in to tell you how excited I am about this...but I truly am. My Carl cutter came and I tried it out, but I still have a few questions:
1. What adhesive do you use? I used regular 3M double stick tape, but the edges seem to be pulling a little.
2. Do you do anything special to make sure things stick? (like place a heavy book on it over night?)
3. Maybe my difficulty is that I am covering the front of the mat board in card stock (mitering and going over the edges). Any tips for that? Is it easy to cover it in less think paper...like designer paper?
In reply to Chris, I just use mono-adhesive on mine. I don't cover the matboard, I just stamp on it. I don't have the permanent inks so when I am done stamping I spray mine w/ clear acrylic to seal it.
In response to Jenmouer, yes, you are right. The largest piece is the back and then tape the other 2 pieces to CS. I also tape a 5 x 6 piece to the back mat board piece.

Kim - if you want to do a 6x6 album with the refill pages from the SM catalog, just measure those and add 1/2 an inch to L & W measurement so you'll have a 1/4 inch border all around. The front cover will still be cut in two. Make the bigger part cover the pages, and the little part on the side will cover where you'd have the extension posts on a regular book. The ribbon really does hold them well!

Thanks for the link. The instructions were great! I really need to see step-by-step instructions!
If you are going to cover the mat board, could you use thick cardboard? I ask this because I do not have a Michaels close to me and I am not sure if I can get any....
Thanks!

Thank you all for the inspiration! These are sooooo addictive.
I just posted my first 6x6 sized journal in the gallery (Halloween Fun)
Measurements I used:
Matboard back cover = 6 1/2" x 7 5/8"
Matboard front cover pieces = 3/4" x 6 1/2" and 6 1/2" x 6 1/2"
Cardstock glued to inside of matboard pieces = 6 1/2" x 7 5/8"
Line up the 6x6 page protector on the inside and mark where your holes should be and punch away. It didn't end up being exactly centered on the 3/4" wide strip, but I think it looks ok. Adjust size if that bugs you. I'm usually weird about things like that but once the ribbon was on, I didn't even notice really.
I think I might just try these for my daughters b-day party to give to the girls to hold pictures from the party in. I think I might even let them create their own "style" of books.
I just thought you might like to know that at Hobby Lobby they will package up huge quantities of really big scraps of matboard (bigger then 8x10) for only $4.99. If you want really big pieces, they sell the big package for $9.99.
I had some 8 1/2 x 11 sb pages from a family trip we took. B/c I had a 12x 12 I just made a matboard scrapbook used page protectors, and put my family vacation pages in it!! It was very complicated.............to get the measurements right. (don't ask I don't even know) but well worth it!
It's in the gallary..
The possibilities are endless!!!
On the albums - just measure your page protectors, and then go from there. You'll want to have about 1/4 inch all around, I think, for the base. The little part on the front that binds them together you'll want to cover the holey-part of the page protector, and have a bit of overhang. The rest - trial and error, as Stephanie mentioned!
I think that the hardest part of the "trial and error" was getting the album binded, leaving it tight enough not to move, yet loose enough for the pages to lay nicely.....this is defanitely not something I would reccomend doing for your personal main scrapbook. It's great for a special occasion, gift, or for a certen event, but not to add too....At least that's my experience.
My sister was at a party store and called me about the cardboard cake sheets. I went and bought a whole bunch to use on these journals for super cheap. I am in the middle of making a journal out of it so I'll let you know how it turns out. Just wanted to tell ya'll about the board...
wow never thought of the cake boards, I have tons of them here (I decorate cakes too). Let me know how they work, don't want to cut up any if they dont' work well..
Cool, glad that worked.. always have cake boards here! I just did 6 Journals (cut out the pieces) out of the cardboard that is behind the designer papers, since only had 2 packages of it (split up 4 packages with niece) had to improvise for the other 2 journals. I got them all cut out and covered, gonna have all done but the decorating for daughters Birthday party tomorrow. She does have friends coming that are not into stamping! Can't believe anyone out there isn't into stamping Well guess they just not been to a party yet, cause that is all it takes!!
Do you glue the mat board covers to card stock? What glue do you use? When I'm looking at a journals, I see a gap between the cover and the spine is that done on the back too and is that the card stock. I'm going to go buy mat today so I need more info.
EVERY journal I looked at is absolutely STUNNING in it's own way. WOW. I wish I had seen these before the end of the school year here.
I need to make 8 for a 6x6 scrapbook class I'm teaching in a few weeks, and I'm sure I'll make WAY more then that!
Janine - - 1st I used 2way glue, but it took alot & made the matboard bow. Then I used my mono & they turned out great! I'm just sure to put it close to the edge & corners. I have made 3 all together (have mat cut & ready for more though). Gave 2 away & the 3rd my kids left outside in the rain. But am working on more & need to learn to upload pics.(working on that too).
I did use a little more mono than I am used to, but hey! We all stocked up right?!
Look on the 1st pg where Beate posted a link for instructions.
Hope this helps!
I'm being silly, but I still need answers. I read all the instructions that I have found, BUT.....what is the material used in the gap I see on the front. I'm mocking up a template and I'm trying to figure out what was used. If it's card stock, does it get all bent and crackled it open and closed too many times.
Sorry, but I'm totally clueless. I did go buy 2 huge sheets of mat and I'm really excited to start.
I just doubled up a piece of cardstock so it was thick and glued it to the cover and binding. On the inside I glued yet another piece of cardstock on top of that.. I haven't yet on the back cover so on the picture I attach you'll be able to see the difference.
I put 1 piece of CS attached to the inside front & the spine. Use bone folder to crease (looks better) after attaching spine & frt cover. I put another piece on the inside back. Lay protector sheet to mark holes. Before you put eyelets in: Bang the matboard on the inside (where the eyelets go). It flattens the matboard a little so the eyelets go all the way through. Hope I make sense...
Because the opening between the spine & cover is only 1/4" it doesn't get all bent & crakled in my experience.
We want to see these when you get them done Janine!
Instructions that are VERY CLEAR, From Lana Originaly
Girls, Here are the instructions that I downloaded from Lana, the journal queen, or is she the princess and Beate is the queen??? I am not sure on that one! They both have more talent in their little finger than I have in my entire body... anyway here they are and I will also attach a pic of the first one I made so you can see how easy they really do come out the first time through...
