Do Pearl ex and Twinkling H2O's yeild the same effect, or are they completely different? Do I need both, or just one or the other, and if so, which one? Are they both easy for a complete novice to learn? I'm NOT a painter, and have done very little with it, but I try. Can anyone help? Thank you!

Randie...
You know I just LOVE my H2O's, so you know which ones I vote for...lol I do have "Pearlwhite" Pearl Ex and I do like that with my watercolor paints. (I only bought a sm jar for least expense.) I will probably buy the 21g jar next time....hehehe!!
It really depends on the 'look' you're going for. They both give a shimmer look. I think the H2O's give a more 'deeper' color look to it, (you've seen what I mean...lol) whereas the watercolor paints still have the 'muted' colors with a shimmer.
Can't wait to see what others think.....
Audrey
While they are both beautiful sources of color, the Twinkling H20's work well where translucent washes of subtle color and iridescence are desired. The feathers on bird wings, flower petals. Works well on coloring book type stamps. But glossy paper and acetate? Get out the Pearl Ex.
There is a recent thread with lists of all the uses for PearlEx pigment powders. I'm sure someone will be referencing it here shortly.
They are as different to me as Classic inkpads and Versamark - both wonderful, but very different applications and results.
I have no advice for you, but I just had to e-mail to tell you that my daughters name is Randie and spelled the exact same way!! She hasn't ever found someone with the same spelling!! She was excited to see your name on here.

Please....are the twinkling H2O's different from the regular watercolor pencils? And where do you find them? I looked in the SU catalog and all I see are regular watercolor pencils. Thanks.
Pearl Ex can be applied to Versamark simply by brushing it on, no "painting" required, if you don't want to become a painter.
SU! doesn't carry Twinkling H2Os.
Twinkling H2O's are a solid paint in little jars...I think they're like pearlex if you buy them in the paint palette's not individual powder pigment jars...you can make your own watercolor palette paints like the ones PearlEx sells by mixing pearlex and gum arabic and distilled water.

Well, I just this morning broke down and ordered Twinkling H2O's. I was at my managers last week and she had them they are GEORGOUS!!
Can't wait to get mine and play I sure hope they are in the new catalog
Hi,
I attended a demo once where an SU demo said she played with Pearl Ex and found that if she used Gold PE and the re-inkers, that she got almost an exact replica of H2O's.
She proceeded to show us, and my novice eye thought they looked pretty similar!

Anyone else out there tried this?
good luck!
Do you know what the mixture amount was...and is this with the SU dye reinkers or craft?

I have both and I think the twinkling H2O's are way better. They are easier to use and leave less mess and don't have to be sealed! I wouldn't give mine up for anything and I use them ALL the time!

While I like my p-ex, I LOVE my h2o's. First of all the colors available for pearl ex really frustrate me. They never seem to match what I'm currently working on while the h2o's have tons of colors. I love that you can just add water to the jar and when you're finished, there's no clean-up or waste -- just put the cap on! My kind of paint! Who has money or time to waste?
I can't help you decide. I have both. I'm a person that has to have it all, even if they never get used.
Actually I just bought the Twinkling H2O's back in September and I have to admit, I love them and have used them way, way, way more than I have my Pearl Ex. (Which I've had for years.)
I'm at an overseas military base and don't have access (or competition ) from the big stores like Michael's, so I've never seen the H20s. Maybe if we all email and beg SU to include them. . . then we can let the customers choose!
Do you mind if I expand the discussion? Some years ago I bought ALL of the Radiant Pearls. I use them occasionally and very lightly to add sheen and interest to an otherwise lifeless card. How would you use all of these products differently?
I also have all of the PearlEx colors and have only recently learned of mixing them with Future floor wax. I have yet to try that. I imagine you can dilute w/ the Future to control the sparkle, right?
Another question: someone mentioned adding PearlEx to reinkers. If you add it to dye reinkers, where's the binder? Would you add a little gum arabic to it?
I guess after spending so very much on all the Radiant Pearls and PearlExes, I'm hesitant to begin all over again with yet another line of colors. I'm one who "needs" ALL of the colors.
Having used all 3 I have to admit that the H2o's are the simplest to use. I have RP and PE as well, just about all of the colors available. I never use the RP any more because they are just so messy and take too long to dry. I have a Golden Retreiver and I always get hair on them while they are drying.
The PE are great for sparkle too, but they are very dusty and you have to seal them with something.
The H2O's are really neat because you do all of your mixing in the pot so there is practically no cleanup, they dry fairly quickly and you don't have to seal them with anything. They also come in a LOT more colors. 88 I think! I'm being a spoilsport [Hi Edith!] and waiting to see if SU! is going to put them in the new catty. If I'm going to spend $ on new colors, I want my discount and sales credit!!!
I have twinkling H2Os and perfect pearls and I use them completely differently.
Twinkling H2Os are amazing especially on women's cards, I far prefer the effect to markers or watercolour pencils.
Perfect Pearls (a powder) are amazing on dark card over versamark ink. I don't think you get the effect on pale card.
If I had to choose one it would be the twinkling H2Os
I mix Pearl Ex with my Luminiere and get a very nice effect. I am pretty sure that it is pretty close to what Twinkling H20s look like. I am still going to by the twinkling H20s though.

OK, now--what are the best twinkling h2o's to start with? I see that there are sooooooooooooo many to choose from. Thanks in advance for any guidance you may be able to give.
Okay, I LOOOOVE the H2Os. They are so easy to use and they are just so darn pretty!!! Like Monica (), I am hoping they come out in the new catalog, but unlike Monica (and courtesy of Shawna who is placing an order 30 March), I have all the colors because I just couldn't decide!!!! But, then again, that's me....I want it all.
As far as the best colors, you need to take a look at your tendancies....if you use no yellow and tons of blue, buy different blues.
 Forgot to mention the best thing about ordering through Shawna....she give a 25% discount to SCSers. She's great. There is a current conversation under the classifieds, I think. ENJOY!!!

Kate...
I wish I could help you decide, but I have them all now. I really think you need to decide what your passion is first. Mine is floral, so I went with sets that had greens (leaf) yellow, pink, red and orange (flower part) and blues (backgrounds). Then, I just got sets that I didn't already have and you know how the rest goes...I had to have them ALL.
I have used h20's and LOVE love LOVE them! ( it was at a class at my local rubber stamp store) I have Pearl Ex and find it to be a bit messy ;o(
The store also did mention that you need to let teh H20's dry out before you re cap them as they will mold if capped right away and kept sealed for too long????
Hi Guys,
After all the rave reviews on this site I had to go out and buys some...I like earthy colours so I bought a set with pale pink, green and browns in it.
Am I doing something wrong or are the colours just very pale? They really didn't show up on the card I was making? Do I just use water with them or do I have to use someting else- there jsut didn't seem to be anything on the brush? Now I have to admit that I do like sparkles in my life - but not sure about these?

Yes, my local craft store (that sold me on H2O's) learned the hard way. She put the caps back on and didn't let them dry out completely, she had one that she didn't use much and when she opened the cap, she just about passed out. SOOOOO, don't put the caps back on till they are dry!! I threw out the caps and have my pots in a 3 drawer Sterilite unit. Works great!!

Which set did you buy?? There is one set that is very pale in coloring/end results. These are used more for 'highlighting' (like a 2nd coat of a touch here and there....like you would for sunlight!!) Hope this helps!!

Sarah Jane,
I am very light handed with paints and watercolors because I like a very washed out effect, but you have to be quite heavy-handed with H2Os. If the effect is too pale you can always go over again until you get the color effect that you want.
But my tip would be you really do need to load the paintbrush to get a vivid color.
If you put a few drops of water in the pots you will use, let them set for a while, then gently stir them around with your brush, you'll find the 'paint' is much thicker and more shimmery. If you need it thinner - just ad more water. I sometimes just use my water brush for a very light shimmer - little color.
for those who use or have used the lumiere..and pe powder
what kind of ratio do you use ??
i have some .. still unused and would honstly like to give it a try before switching to something else
anyone??? always happy to get the "how to's "
thanks
Just went out and bought some darker colours and I LOVE them!!! the first set really didn't show up at all - the new green and purple and yellow are absolutely gorgeous!! I am so glad I tried again!!
also the water drop in them and leaving them for a few minutes worked wonderfully! Thanks for the ideas

My take is this. I like the H20's for the variety, but ?Ireally do use the pearlex more. I've got gum arabic and Pearlex with gum arabic and water is really spiff.
I know that SU used to sell Radiant pearls, I'm hoping they may consider selling H20s next year.

I LOVE the H2o's! The colors are so vibrant and they are easy to use. Just water and the pot of paint!
Also, they have great names and when you buy them in sets (6 or 12), they have set #'s which helps avoid duplication.
The little pots fit perfectly in an empty SU stamp box.
Here is the 12 pot set I just bought. The names are as gorgeous as the color!
Teal Zircon
Royal Orchid
Moss Agate
Sweet Thistle
Deep Coral
True Blue
English Lavender
Wine & Roses
Dreamsicle
Lemongrass
Mediterranean Blue
Blushing Roses
I tried to attach a picture of them but it was too many pixels!
