If you use the white craft do you need to let it dry a little before chalking? It seems like if you chalked right away you would end up with a mess?!?
thanks!
I didn't. I was actually afraid it would dry on me so I did 4 at a time. The trick is to really POP with the dauber and not rub. I tried popping with a q-tip and that worked okay, but the duabers are much easier.
This technique uses Versamark ink, pastels or chalks, sponge daubers/stipple brushes/stamp sponge and of course stamps.
It works best when using a bold line or image stamp set. Fresh Flowers works pretty well but I've seen Shelli Gardner use Border Builders to demonstrate it on DIY and it worked beautifully!
Stamp your image using Versamark (start with white paper as a beginner, but you can get cool effects using dark paper with the pastel colors.) Then using your applicator (sponge daubers/stipple brushes/stamp sponge) pick up some chalk or pastel and dab it over the Versamarked image. Keep dabbing until you get the effect you like, then blow off the excess.
Hope that helps, for images you can find them at the Stampin' Up! website in the Idea Center under Tips, tricks etc etc.
My upline demonstrator did a demonstration on poppin' pastels using black cardstock and a SU! white craft pad. The idea is basically the same as the versamark pad, just using the white craft pad instead. The image was stamped on black cardstock then layered onto brushed gold cardstock and then onto a burgandy card. She also tied gold cord aroung the brushed gold and image. Hope this makes sense.
Hi SCS friends...can anyone explain the poppin pastels technique to me. It's my sisters b-day today and I would love to try something new for her. Thanks girlies!!!!
Love poppin' pastels! So incredibly easy, yet you get major visual bang for your buck.
First you stamp your image in Versamark, then you just color over it with pastels using a sponge dauber or Q-tip! The ink resists the pastel just a bit, and you get a really neat halo effect around the edges. It's especially cool on dark cardstock!

Thanks Rachel....I guess I figured you had to use glossy cardstock. Boy was I WAAYYY off!

I learned too that it is better to pounce the pastels on rather than rub. For me I get a much sharper image rather than smeared versamark and pastels. This is so fun and easy!!
For poppin' pastels I use a white craft pad to stamp the image on dark paper, then use a Q-tip and pastels to color. Can be sprayed with hair spray or art spray to seal. Could also use Versamark pad.
I stamp my image in versamark and use a cotton ball to apply the pastels to the image. Also, when applying the color be sure to pounce and not rub. Rubbing will smear your image. I have never tried using the white craft ink, but have read that it gives beautiful results. Also, I use white cardstock a lot too. It gives a different look than using the dark. Play around and have fun!
Thanks for the help. I, also, have been trying to find out how this technique was achieved. Thanks for asking for the rest of us who didn't know. Have a great day.
For poppin' pastels you stamp your image in versamark or white craft ink. You then will use a sponge dauber or cotton ball to apply the chalks to the versamark and the image will "pop". Be sure to pounce the color on and not rub it. That will smear the ink and make a big mess. HTH
Thank you very much for the tips. I just did my first poppin pastel thanks to you ladies. doesn't look bad. Am I suppose to spray the chalk with hairspray to set it? Once again-thanks for the help.
