Default Re: bookmark tassels

I am trying to make some bookmarks for my DD's Girl scout troop. I wanted to actually make the tassels for them. Anyone know how to do this? I googled it and find 1 or 2 tutorials but they aren't great--hard to see what they are doing. Anyone out there know how?

When I made some bookmarks I didn't make actual tassels, but punched a hole at the top. Then I used several strands of yarn mixed with coordinating strands of fun fur and looped it through like you do to fringe the ends of an afghan.

They turned out really cute. The fun fur mixed with the yarn was fluffy and girlie and my granddaughters loved them.

I've often wondered how to make the tassles too. I made some bookmarks recently and just punched a hole and used 3/8" grosgrain ribbon. I knotted it so it wouldn't come loose and cut the end pieces on a slant. Pretty quick and easy. Not fluffy like a tassle, but they looked nice!

Default A Smooth Finish

Hi all,

The tutorials are great for making these tassels. One thing that they don't do, which I do from my old macrame days, is to give the tassel a smooth 'head'.

If, instead of tying a knot for the head (which leaves a little knotted bump on the outside), you make a loop from the yarn you use to tie the head.

With the loop end toward the top of the tassel and the open end toward the bottom of the tassel, leave a bit longer 'tail' on the yarn and begin to wind the rest of the yarn upward.

Once you reach the top of your tassel's head, you will be at the loop. Push the end of your yarn through the loop and, gently, pull the loose 'tail' end of the yarn downward.

This will, slowly, pull the loop and the remainder of your winding yarn down inside the wound yarn - the 'head'.

This is a neat finish and it's completely secure. The winding of the 'head' will not unwind on you.

Hope this is understandable. I tried to find a video but it doesn't seem that many do macrame except for jewellery, nowadays. I'm a child of the 60's and we did a LOT of macrame 'hangings'. The above technique is how we finished them.

That's how we've always done them... and some of our tassels have lasted for decades.
