After reading the thread on Michael's 50% off coupon, I decided to visit Sizzix.com to check out the diecuts available. On their homepage they have a new sizzix sidekick. It is smaller, and $20 cheaper than the regular machine. Help me here ladies. I am sure that it would do smaller images than the original. I mostly do cards and only brag books. Which would be the best for me. Has anyone seen the sidekick at Michael's?
The sidekick was just made available in early November. I have not seen it in Michaels yet. The sidekick can only be used with the sizzlits or their embossing templates and folders. I personally went with the original sizzix die cutter. You can get a converter for the sizzlits and then you are not limited. If you revisit their website you will see some great new originals dies that should be out soon. They will have bookplate dies, eyelet washers, frame squares and circles, buckle shapes, etc.... I can't wait for these to come out. If you only have the sidekick you will not be able to use it. My vote is grab the 50% off coupon from Michaels and buy the original Sizzix.
I bought the machine and now i want the sidekick. I called michaels last night and they said it could take up to two months for them to get it into the stores..which stink!!! I wanted to use the 1/2 off coupon for it too...
Thank you for your responses. I think Jen is probably right. It would be worth my extra $20 to get the original and be able to use all the cutters with it.
Janice, since you have the original, what makes you want the Sidekick and not just purchase the converter? I'm curious.
I have the converter and i thought it would be nice to have if i could get it half off..and i thought too that it would be good for taking it places..i don't know.
The large sizzix is nice because it uses all the die cuts...
I just saw them at Archivers today. (Michaels is always the LAST to get the new stuff - at least the one by me is. Our Joann's is crummy too, but at least we have Archivers) Archivers seems to be devoting more space to the Sizzix stuff. I recently purchased a Sizzix and haven't really given it a workout yet so I'm not sure about the Sidekick.
A good place to get diecuts for less is Scrapforless.com. Joan doesn't list the diecuts on her website but if you email her she will send back a price list and they are much below the (non-coupon) retail price and a much better selection than at Michaels. Joan gives great service too.
The reason to invest in the sidekick if you already have the regular machine is portability. If you wanted to take it to crops, etc. The sizzlit alphabets are really cute and the regular machine is just too heavy to take to a crop!

I've noticed lately that Michaels in St Louis area have been putting the Sizzix stuff on sale at 20-30% off at the same time as the 40% and 50% coupons so you can't use them. :(

I used the 50% Michaels coupon to get the xyron 510. Now I'm wondering whether I should have gotten the 900. My concern was that I wouldn't be doing much of the larger stuff and wouldn't I be wasting the cartridge material if I only did small?
Any info please? :?
I think you're probably better off with the 510 if you mostly make cards. I have the 510 and looked at the 900 today (mostly because I'm thinking about a project for my Brownie troop). I just don't think I would use the 900 often enough and you're right, there could be a lot of waste.
I didn't even use my 510 until recently and now I'm zyron-ing everything in sight!
I've ordered the 900 and it dawned on me what a wonderful thing it will be to be able to save one each of our die cuts as a template. I'll just laminate it and keep it forever. I'm going to do this with several templates I have at home.
I'm going to have to get it out of the box..i have no IDEA..which one it is..i will email you..maybe you can help me! is that what it is though? a laminator?
Janice,
It is quite easy to use. I love my 510. I use the laminate/magnet one to make stamped magnets, but there are so many exciting things you can do with the Xyrons. I know that you will love it too.

Oh, it's so much more. It is a cold laminator so there's no waiting and no splitting. It applies adhesive to the back of ANYTHING including Velum so you can't see the adhesive like you can with mono. There's both permanent and repositionable rollers available. There's magnetic tape that you can apply to make your own picture magnets and what nots. Great for those magnetic bookmarks. The reason I like the 900 is the width. I don't know how much waste there will be, but I like the idea of laminating full sheets of paper. I love to laminate.
I just bought the 2 sided laminating cartridge. I'm gonna stamp all my stamps onto cardstock and laminate them into a little book, so I don't have to keep running over to see what I have and what would look good. Can't wait to get home.
PS - Don't worry about me, I don't have many sets... yet.
I picked up the laminate/magnet cartridge last night, too bad it's only 10 feet unlike the others which are far longer.
I also looked at the Sizzlets. WOW! Talk about not worth money in my opinion. I guess I'm just not into shaped card stock because $9 for one shape was way more than I would ever consider paying.
