I am buying my first alphabet set and would like to know your opinion. I would like to purchase an a versatile set. Hopefully one that won't retire in July. Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA
Any alphabet is on my wish list...but too start I use my Pure and simple upper case alot. Next woould have to be a double seet like news print have fun.
The very first alphabet I ever bought was the Brushstroke Double Alphabet - it's still one of my all time faves. Next to that, I think it's the Simple Type double alpha.
I love just having both the upper and lowercase in one place!
I have Newsprint also and it is very versatile, and has upper and lowers. I bought the Classic Numbers to go with it because they are so similar in style, but are a little smaller than the Newsprint numbers.
My preference (for scrapbooking, anyway) is the somewhat larger fonts and smaller numbers. Collage is the only one we know for sure will be in the next catalog I believe. We do know that for sure, don't we?!?
Thanks so much for the info. I am going to check out the catty and look at the newsprint and the classic. Please keep the suggestions coming. I am going to check back later. Thanks so much!
Okay, here are some things to consider when purchasing an Alphabet:
1) When was the alphabet first released? The older it is, the more likely it will retire sooner;
2) Why do I want alphabet? Scrapping? Cardmaking? Favors/Other?
3) If I scrap, what is my primary size? 12x12? 8.5x11? 6x6? The size of the pages that you most frequently work with should determine which alphabet you will ultimately purchase.
4) If I scrap, do I scrap mostly: kids? adults? trips/travel? family heritage? a little of everything? You'll want to choose an alphabet that will most thoroughly fit into all of your scrapping categories.
5) How versatile is this alphabet? Go online and type in the name of the alphabet. Look at the samples that come up...if they're all done in pink with little bows and you do primarily heritage, there is going to be problems. If, however, there is a *great* variety of different scrapping styles, you've got a winner.
6) What's more important - size or bang? *(GET YOUR MINDS OUT OF THE GUTTER, LADIES!!) Double alphabets are great bang-for-the-buck...both upper and lower case for a good price. This is good but they lack size and are generally best for smaller-format pages and for cards and favors. Single-case alphabets cost more, but are generally larger in size and work better for larger scale and larger format pages. So yes, even in stamping and scrapping, size *does* matter....
7) Will this alphabet stand the test of time? If it's a hot trend you'll get lots of use for the here and now, but it could end up "dating" your pages. If you're looking for a long-term investment, you may want something more classic and less trendy.
Hope this information helps - these are questions I pose to my customers when they are looking to choose an alphabet. ~ K
