I got both Almond and White 2 x 2 smooth tiles at Menard's a local home supply store here. I stamped with Stazon, baked 15 min at 300 and then colored with Sharpies. The Stazon can still smear with some of the sharpie colors, so dab your colors on instead of a coloring motion.

i got my tiles at Rona... They are 2X2 also but not smooth... I stamp my image then spray an acrylic sealer on then color in with sharpies or use your blender pen or aqua painter (this looks best)

I got tumbled tiles -I believe they are about 2 x 2 at Menards in the tile section -they come in a set of 9 shrink wrapped and are around $5.94 for the set of 9 .
I use Staz-on also then use chalks applied with a Q-tip to color what I want and then seal with a matte sealer spray -They are so cute!
I use 4 x 4 tumbled tiles from Home Depot. There are 9 in a box for $5.94 or something like that. If you stamp with StazOn you do not need to bake. Actually, you really shouldn't bake since StazOn is a solvent ink and when you heat it in an oven, it releases toxic fumes...
You can color with sharpies, fabrico markers, chalks, or you can use an old blender pen and touch it to the StazOn pads and color in that way. If you color with chalks spray with Krylon Workable Fixatif from a good distance (12-16 inches) Give it a few coats.
i am not sure what stores are in your area, but i bought lots of tiles from lowes. they are in the flooring section and 4x4. they are called "rialtto white or beige." they are 32 cents a piece. you can buy them individually or in a box of 80 for about $25. beware- there are several similar styles that are more expensive- only the finish on the ends is different!
we stamped them with stayz-on (don't forget to get some stayz-on cleaner- it will not come off of your stamp, even with the stampin scrub!) if you mess up, nail polish remover will take off the ink! some people used sharpies and blender pens (you can only do a small part at a time and then blend while the ink is still wet.) be sure to set with the heat gun before you color. then i sprayed them with a matte acrylic sealer. they look wonderful packaged as a set of 4, tied up with rafia or ribbon! lowes also carries small felt pads for the bottom so that they do not scratch anything!
I found tumbled tiles at Menards - set of 9 shrink wrapped for aroud $5.94 for the set. A word of warning - the cashier tried to charge $5.94 for each tile! I think someone else here had the same thing happen to them. The rialto tiles I found at Lowes. They work just fine and are cheaper.
Sarahs, Thank you so much for the tip about going to Lowes!!!!!!! I had bought a set at home depot for $5.94 for 9 of them and they were not near as nice and I got twice as many for about the same price at Lowes. I was also able to find the 6x6 tiles to match for 88 cents to make trivets out of.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOO MUCH you have made my holiday gift giving so much more affordable this year since all I am giving is trivets and coasters, and quiet books for the kids.
I bought some at Joanns about two months ago. They were on clearance. Of all the Joanns that I have been to, I'd never seen them there before and I have not seen them since......I bought them all!
I am sure that this info is already posted but I cannot find it. Can you use Classic inks on tiles? I am using the tumbled tiles and spraying them with a sealant when I am finished.
i have done tons of tiles, but i have never used any of the classic inks. a friend has used the craft ink, and said theat it took FOREVER to dry. i have used the stayzon ink pads on all of mine and they have come out great! i also sealed them when i was finished.
StazOn is really the best ink to use on the tiles! I hit my tiles with my
heat gun for just a minute after stamping the image and then color them with my SU Markers! I lightly spray the tile [u]outside[/u on my deck, cuz the smell of Acrylic Sealer is pretty strong. My first coat of sealer is light so that I don't cause the colors on the tile to bleed. Then every few minutes I spray another coat til I have about 4-5 coats. I add soft adhesive cushions to the bottom of the tiles and wrap them up for gifts!!

Is StayZon found with stamp pads in the rubber stamping section? These ideas are all really great. I'm going to Lowes today and get some tiles for coasters. Thanks for all the ideas. Sue
If you have a Michales the stazon is in the same area as the other ink pads. Also look for the stazon cleaner, they have started carrying it but it sells out fast.
I have done the tiles as well and you know what really looks great? I have used clear embossing powder to seal it. After I heat set the stazon in when I am finished coloring, the tile is a little warm so the powder sticks to it well. Emboss it but use something to keep it on because it can get warm. Then after it cools do another layer if you want it to get smooth. The first one is going to be shiny but not completely smooth. The more layers the more smooth it is. They are so pretty and look much nicer than the spray. Not to mention no fumes!
Okay, here is the specifics when shopping at Menards for the tiles.
4"x4" Bottocino are mostly smooth white and excellent for clear imaging
(snowman, flowers, etc. that you color in with chalks)on the tile with StaZon ink. The Travartine(sp?) is rougher with actual holes over the surface and is beautiful for the scenic stamps like the lighthouse, or covered bridges. Hope that is helpful. I love the Bottocino tiles, after I chalk them I do lightly spray with a clear enamel matte finish sealer.
Nothing specific, just what I had on hand. They are so adorable and are like those thirsty stone coasters. Everyone I make them for "LOVES" them. Margit

I have been unable to find stazon. I live in a very small town. I did check at Michael's in a larger nearby town but they had never heard of it. Walmart, here does not have it. Suggestions?
You can call your friendly neighborhood Stampin' Up! demo to get the stazon pads!
I have a tumbled tile just for experimenting on--and I've tried lots of ideas on it. DON'T use the SU! classic pads. They don't look too bad at first, but soon the ink will bleed out into the tile and the image will be fuzzy and indistinct. It looks awful. The SU! classic pads are pretty colors, but heat-setting doesn't work very well by itself. I've tried baking a tile in the oven (350 for over an hour), and also heating it with a heat gun--two years later, the ink still smears if it gets wet. You can spray it with a sealer, and then it's fine. I like to color with Fabrico markers best, but SU! doesn't carry them anymore. (You can use our blender pens with them for pastel colors, and still heat-set them.) Especially when I'm doing these with kids (and don't want to risk my Fabrico markers), I like to color with plain Prismacolor colored pencils. Their colorless blender works great to smooth out the color, and colored pencils are pretty foolproof.

Here's a link to the company that manufactures StazOn, Versamark, Brillance, Versafine, Versacolor etc., and on the right hand side you will see “Where to Buy?. Their Tips/Techniques section is very informative as well.
I bought most of mine at Menards. Like has been said they are shrink wrapped in a pk of 9. The bad thing is you cannot see what is inside. You may end up with ones you cannot use (too pourus). I asked my DH to run into Home Depot while I was in the store next door and see what they had. Theirs was in a box. He went through them and picked out the good ones for me (What a great guy!)
I stamp with Stazon. I did not color them. I used the different colors of Stazon. I bought the stcky felt circles for the bottom at Wal-mart.
