I've never actually seen a side-by-side comparison, but I have the Scor-tape and love it. It holds extremely well. I've used it on small projects, but have not yet made too many boxes. I've been told it is a less-expensive alternative and the good thing about Scor-tape is that you can tear it with your fingers.
i like the beacon 3-in-1 glue. it has a quick tack, so it grabs and holds pieces together, but you still have a little time to wiggle the parts around - something NOT so easy with tape - but when it dries (about 5-10 minutes) it's rock hard and not gonna move!

it has a store finder on it, so hopefully you can locate some in your area.
i had a class last cmas making chinese takeout boxes - we used red line tape to put them together.
a lot of the ladies had trouble because they didn't line up their box properly and once that tape took hold, it was really on there! which is a good thing - when your box is put together right, but a bad thing when it isn't! LOL!
i had a kids class and we used the 3 in 1 to make a small box, and even the kids could do it using the glue. when they put the parts together, it held, but they could wiggle them around to get them in the right position.
i also like it for applying embellies like buttons or flowers - especially those silk flowers that don't like to be adhered! even works for metals.

I love the Scor-Tape. You get more for your buck than the red tape AND you don't need scissors. You can just tear the Scor-Tape easily with your fingers. It's super hold endures. I find that that tacky adhesive can still leave a "lumps and bumps" in your project and is a little messier. Scor-Tape comes in 3 different width's, too. It's great for ribbon and you almost can't tell it's there. Just know that Scor-tape is unforgiving so once you lay it down, it's permanent.
I have always used Tacky Tape (Provocraft) from Wal*Mart, but keep hearing about Scor Tape and am going to place an order for that soon. In the meantime, the Tacky Tape works great (it is just like the redline tape you buy from SU, only cheaper).
I use the red line tape (tacky tape, sticky strip - a rose by any other name...) that I purchased from TexasJodyLynn a while ago - I got a 36 yard roll for $12.
I too, use the red line sticky tape, I don't recall the name, but it's red and it comes iin different sizes. I have the 1/8 inch size for small boxes and bags. It rocks. However, you have to be uber careful about lining up your score lines and ends and stuff.
I'm another fan of the red tape. It's *SO* sticky. I get mine at Creative Cuts & More, where they recommend it for the assembly of all their die cuts. They have a great price on it, too. Their 1/8" stuff goes for about 23c/yard.
