Default Background stamps and PVC pipe!

For over a year, now, I've wanted to try the acrylic Mega Mount, for background stamps, but I haven't been willing to spend over $25 on something I wasn't sure would make any difference for stamping backgrounds. I've been very frustrated, trying to stamp clean and clear background images. Finally, today, I went to Lowes, to poke around. Well, I left with a 6" diameter PVC pipe, hoping it would make a decent Mega Mount stand-in. After making impressions of almost all my background stamps,(about 15) using the pipe, I am confident in saying this is an excellent way of getting clear impressions! Caveat; It isn't comfortable to use. Right now, in my eagerness, I used it as is, without being cut down to a more manageable size. Doing so, and epoxying a handle on it, will make a significant difference in how much "fun" stamping this way will be.
I just had to share my excitement. I LOVE background stamps, and the flexibility of design variation they offer, and I just knew there HAD to be a less-frustrating way to impress with them. So happy its turned out to be as good as unmounting my wheels (which I think I should also try on the pipe, though its awfully wide - about 6" - and may be too unwieldy).
Anyone else have a great technique for managing clear and clean impressions from their background stamps. I'm ALL EARS!! -Melissa

I am so willing to try this! I made a card the other day and my BG just didn't cover well.
Really irked me. I'm not willing to spend the bucks on the Mega Mount either. I'll just head to the hubs workshop instead! Thanks for this tip

How clever. I love when we can find solutions that are practical and save a few bucks.

I have to say, I do not own any acrylics, and I didn't know what a the Mega Mount was. So, of course I googled it.

I too love background stamps. I place them (wood mounted) face up on my table (after being inked up). Then I place my paper/CS/whatever on top of it and rub it with my fingers to get an impression. It's kinda the reverse of stamping on paper; it's papering a stamp haha.

I am curious to try your method. I may have to go out and buy an acrylic BG stamp.

I've tried that but haven't had good results. Maybe because I use less-expensive paper (wish I could get some better, but its the less-expensive or pretty much not-at-all). If you decide to try the pipe be sure to let us know (even if it's months from now - lol!) I'm eager to do some more experimenting. Hopefully tonight, if I can stay awake that long, again!

Someone else posted about this same problem. She solved the issue by putting a phone book under her paper then stamping. I tried it once and it seemed to work well.

The PVC pipe idea is great!
I use a "badly warped" ( bowed) Cuttlebug cutting plate. I had two suction cup handles ( the style you use on the rotary cutter ruler) from my quilting days and put those on the cutting plate . Works great and it didn't cost anything since I was going to throw out the cutting plate.

Actually, all my backgrounds are rubber that I've unmounted. For the trial, last night, I used my tape gun to adhere some of the stamps that didn't have enough adhesive leftover from being on the wood. Some I tried still on foam and some I tried bare rubber. Both worked equally well.

Could you give a link for this item? I've never been a sewer and am unsure what to keyword to see it. Thanks!

It would be something like this template handle
The Amazing Little Gripper Template Handle : quilting tools : sewing & quilt : Shop | Joann.com
or you could make a "Cathie handle", which is made from packing tape, originated by Cathie Allen. Here's the you tube video of hers explaining it:

Mine is just a little red handle with a suction cup on either end. Mine is really old and it appears they are not made anymore. The new ones cost a fortune.
I am sure I didn't pay more than a couple of dollars for mine.
It would be cheaper to buy the Mega mount than use my old warped CB cutting mat idea .

Oh...well, then I feel better! When I googled that other thing you mentioned, I had thought that you sliced it and used it on top of a block, like a handle. Oh my, I am not having a good day today, am I!!
