1-The cost. It's much easier for me to justify a $60 tool.
2-The small footprint. I love that I can put it up on a shelf when I'm not using it (which isn't very often).
3-The ability to cut thru odd materials, like CDs and coasters.
4-It's just a fun little tool.

If you plan to bind only 12x12 books, this may not be the tool for you. But I like to make small notebooks and scrapbooks for my classes and for my kids. I like the professional look. It has also turned out to be a great way to use up scraps and all those printed papers I've been collecting.

I like that the wire binding is very "in" at the moment (Old Navy's notebooks have all been bound like this for a while), but also a classic look.

I like that when you open the covers, a wire binding still keeps them even, while a coil binding makes them a bit offset.

And my Bug needed a little friend to keep it company. Maybe I'll end up with a hybrid machine if I leave them alone long enough!

Well, I was going to post all my reasons for the BIA, but Amy already did! Ditto to everything she just said. I love how tiny it is- I was surprised when I took it out of the box. It's also really lightweight, which means it's easy to take to crops, my mom's house, etc. And it's cheap. So basically, everything Amy said! :-)

OK I should use a different word- not cheap, "inexpensive." It's still great quality, KWIM?

My mom is going to be making perhaps a dozen 100 page 8-1/2" x 11" books. She and I have agreed to share a coil binding system and were leaning toward the BIA, but when I pointed out that she'd have to punch several times on each set of pages she agreed that Rubicoil might work better for her.

Right now I plan to mostly make bigger books and calendars, too. But you can make small books with Rubicoil, too, can't you?

Thanks for any feedback -

Yes, you can make smaller notebooks. The coils for the Rubi are easy to cut to any size. I have to admit that even though I have a Rubicoil, I did just get the BIA. It was just so cute and I love the fact that you can cut through thicker things. I think that they both have their purposes and both will be useful. My friend, Michelle, gave me a notebook made with the BIA and that pushed me over the edge to where I really wanted it.

Sounds like the Rubicoil is definitely something that you guys can get good use of! If I were doing bigger projects like what it sounds you will be doing, I'd probably want this too. It would be really neat to SHARE it with someone! (1/2 the price, all the benefits!)

Thanks for confirming the solution to our Rubicoil vs BIA dilemma :-) We'll be ordering our Rubicoil next week. Who knows, maybe we'll end up with a BIA too, like some of you ;-)

If I'm right - the Rubicoil uses plastic coils... and the BIA uses metal coils.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong

I am averse to plastic.... so this thread sucked me in. I think I need the BIA...
But need to put it on a wish list for now as I think this week I "need" some acrylic blocks to go with the Pollen Dust stamps I just bought!

This place is so dangerous....

I was at the CKC this weekend and almost purchased the BIA. My question is, where do you purchase the clipboard to create the covers as well as what kind of paper/cardstock is used for the pages?

The ones for the BIA are metal, but they're called "wires." You can see them at Bonnie's.

Sorry, NHolder, we must have been posting at the same time!

I use medium weight coasters for my notebook covers, or chipboard I purchase at my LSS (or scrounge). Archivers carries the stuff, as does eclecticpaperie.com and allthatscraps.com. I'm sure there are other places, too!

Oh--you guys are doing me in..........

It seems I'm wrapped up in the Bind It All frenzy!!! Quick question before I "push" the Check-out button................For wire size prospective--does anyone happen to know what size wire coil is on the SU 5x5 On Board Journals--I'd say 3/4"--but I'd like to make sure!!! :-)

Thanks--and I "love" all the examples that have been shared!!! :-)

Hi KJ, I don't have one of the On Board journals--I got my BIA so I didn't need one! My 1/2" wires hold 20 cardstock pages and 2 covered coasters, if that gives you any idea how much they hold.

I just ordered my bind-it-all last week from Bonniebests and I should be receiving it tomorrow. I can't wait!
Somewhere I read that you can use matboard for the covers of the books. I was hobbly lobby last week and they had huge sheets of it in the framing section that were on sale. I paid $3.50 for a great big sheet. Worth a try, it is about the same thickness of the coasters.

I am one of the guilty ones, buying up all the 1/2" coils. I also bought some single 3/4" ones from allthatscraps, and they came perfectly packaged. I was worried they might marry during shipping. They were nicely wrapped in plastic wrap.

We are going to Disneyland this summer, so my dd(9) and ds(4) decided they want to make their own autograph books with my BIA. I guess I can spare a couple coasters and coils! They want to decorate the outsides first and then add wallet size pics of themselves with each character when we get back. I am so glad my kids enjoy my hobby!!

Jennifer, if they're going to use up some of your wires, don't you think you'll need to buy more???? :-)

Well, I just bought all that eclecticpaperie had during their NSD sale, so I think I am OK for now! I think I have 45, or so. I am pretty sure the kids are going to use the 3/4", so they have a little more room. Plus, I can get 3 coaster books out of 1 coil, right? But I am sure I will need to get more, soon!!
