Please help me. I must be the only person in the SCS universe who has waited this long to try a set of nestabilities. And now I can't get the stinking things to emboss. Die cut, yes. Emboss, No.
Here is what I am doing:
Paper
die, ridges up
Rubber gasket like material
shims under the white cutting board to get it to the right height
I pull down and nothing! I've searched a few threads but can't find a lot of help for the OLD red sizzix machine. Can you help?
I, also struggled with this until I figured it out. Now I can't remember how I did it ----- do you have the tan embossing mat????? I know I couldn't do it until I got that. . .
I got the same problem. I just bought sizzix big kick yesterday and I got the Nestabilities collection and does not emboss. it cuts great.question is, will I use the same tan emossing pad?
This may seem dumb, but did you flip it over and look at both sides? I never thought I was embossing...or embossed the 3 ridges and then one day I flipped the paper over and there it was staring at me!!
Ellen Hutsen has the recipes on her blog and I printed them out until I had it memorized!
Thank you for replying...I guess I will have to get a tan mat. I was trying to do it with a rubber material that I had from some plumbing issues--but it obviously doesn't work. I bet the tan mat is more pliable than the rubber sheet I am using.
I wonder where the best place is to get some of these tan rubber mats. I know that PTI is out of them.....
I'm sorry - I can't help you - I was sent a tan mat by the very very generous SCSer here who had one and wasn't using it. She is Indy-Patti and I am soooo grateful to her for her generosity.
Here is how to get you old sizzix to work with Spellbinders dies.... including Spellbinders nestabilities.....
TO CUT:
Put your magnetic converter on the sizzix machine
place your white sizzix mat down in the track
place your paper down on the white sizzix mat
Place your SPELLBINDERS DIE FACE DOWN ( the side of the die with the ridges or blade) on the cardstock
Place the Spellbinders Spacer Plate on TOP of the Die
Place three pieces of cardstock on top of the spacer plate
Scoot along to cut...
TO EMBOSS:
Remove the three pieces of cardstock
Remove the Spellbinders Spacer Plate
TURN THE DIE OVER LEAVING THE CARDSTOCK IN THE DIE
Place the TAN SPELLBINDERS EMBOSSING MAT on top of the die
Place the three pieces of cardstock on top of the TAN SPELLBINDERS MAT
Scoot along to emboss.
This sandwich works like a charm ..... how do I know this..... I am Stacey and I own Spellbinders and I demonstrate this sandwich at consumer shows all of the US. I also wrote the sandwiches. I just finished a DVD which will be available soon for all to view and follow along.
FYI for all...... Plummers gasket is NOT the same as a Spellbinders tan Embossing mat..... you will indeed get a different embossing result with the gasket. The density of Spellbinders tan mats are different then Plummers gasket.
Thanks, Stacey, for the detailed reply....the difference is in the detail! The Spellbinders tan pad works much better than the plumbers gasket and you always need to remember that the paper or cardstock always goes between the die and the tan pad. Love that Wizard!

 Wow!! Everything is super clear and I appreciate that you wrote those directions in the first place because without them, I would've been very disappointed in the whole system and now I can whip out those plates and use them for any project! Thank you!!
Thank you so much for your detailed instructions. Now I have to go off and figure out what a spellbinders spacer plate is....and I just ordered the tan mat from Ellen Hutson's store. I knew it was possible to work with these dies in the old Sizzix--I am excited to get it to work!
Wow, now I am really confused. I FINALLY ordered some Nestabilities (waited because I only have the old red sizzix and a Wishblade, did not want to buy another die cut machine). They are on their way as we speak...the last time I posted this question, people made it sound much simpler. Now I need to find the tan mat AND some spacer thingy....where will I find both, anyone know?

I have success using the Sizzix Adapters in place of the Spellbinder Spacer plate ---- but I can see where a spacer plate would be better as the Sizzix adapters are small and sometimes I have to use several. . .otherwise these directions are great and very clear - thank you so much ----
there are several of us "dinosaurs" who just can't justify the purchase of another machine and are figuring out how to use the old stuff we have.
Thanks again.

Your Welcome Kelle, Its my pleasure to be of help to everyone, there is some confusion on the board with so many different sandwiches... I figured its good to just post to all of you and let you know which ones work the best since I wrote them. We put alot of time into being sure they were correct.
Ellen has the Spacer plates you will need. She is awesome and really takes care of her customers just like all of Spellbinders retailers!
Thanks to your detailed instructional posts, I got it to work with my rubber gasket material and chip board as my top layers, but the embossing was not that crisp. I am hoping that it will work better with the right tools. I really wanted to be able to emboss a rectangle on the front of a card without cutting out the rectangle image first--and can't seem to do that. Is that not possible?

Hi Kelle,
depending on the thickness of your CS your emboss chrispness may vary. There are a few things you can do to make the embossing better. With the Sizzix Press you can add extra paper to shim..... the nice thing about the press is you can actually add paper to shim with out "hurting" or breaking any plates. Also, the harder you can press physically the better ..... this is one reason that roller type machines offer a more chrisp embossing from the start.... its because of the pressure exerted in the rollers.
You can also spritz your CS with a product called paper glide which is a paper conditioner. It will help to soften the fibers in the paper to give a more chrisp emboss. You can also try a little dish liquid and water in a spritz bottle.... lightly mist your paper and you will see a difference in the embossing. :p
I may be flamed for suggesting this (especially since I use plumber's gasket with great results, but that's another topic altogether), but I used a thin piece of acrylic/plexiglass from a click it box on accident for a spacer when I got my first nesties... it worked wonderfully!
When it broke in my friend's real CB, I bought a cheap acrylic photo frame from WM, the plastic kind that is all acrylic and stands up on its own. I snapped it in half, then pressed it with the sizzix on the rolled edges (to break them). It all popped apart into four 4x6 pieces of thin plastic. 1.98, I think. Works fantastic!
