Do you really need to have a bone folder. I am a newbie, and currently I just use a small wooden ruler. Am I just being "too cheap", or is the bone folder a must have?
YES!! My stampin friends and I all put off buying one when we were new and used other things for making strong creases. But I've learned that nothing works better for scoring curves, texturing an edge of CS, getting glue stick to adhere well, and getting DP to cover the edge of chipboard. I ALWAYS take my bone folder when scrampin away from home, and it lives on my craft table. They aren't that expensive and are so worth it. Oriental Trading has a multi-pack pretty cheap if you could split a pack with stampin buddies! Good luck, and welcome to the addiction!

i have one, but don't always use it. i use my trimmer to help with my lines and i usually use whatever tool is handy, either my bone folder, doodlebug rub on tool or whatever else i find that will work. they aren't that expensive though.
Yes, I know other things will help fold a crease in your paper....but a "bone folder" sounds so elegant, as in "My gracious, I think I've misplaced my bone folder", and besides it feels good in your hand.

I use mine on every card. It's the best way to get a sharp, crisp crease for your fold.
You can also use it to curl the edges of your paper, and to smooth out a larger area of paper (like if you're altering something and adhering paper using a glue--you want to make sure you get any air bubbles out and that the paper is ultra smooth).
If you're at Michaels and have nothing better to use a 40% or 50% off coupon on, that's a good time to pick one up.
I use mine all the time, and keep an extra one around too. Whenever I grab something else and use it, the paper has gotten messed up. The bone folder is so smooth, I guess that is what makes the difference.

Thanks in advance for the advice.
Well ladies, from all your advice, I will go out and buy a bone folder. It sounds like no one can live without theirs!
Bone folders also work great to get even coverage of a background stamp....
Put stamp down rubber side up.
Ink rubber
Place cardstock on top of background stamp
Place a piece of scrap paper
Burnish with your bone folder
You get even coverage! I could never get a nicely stamped background until my demo taught me that trick!

I love my bone folder. I recommend a real one, not a plastic "bone" folder. They are not the same. The price difference is a few dollars, but it's worth it.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! You do NOT need a bone folder. I have some of the ribbon boxes from HL and MIke's. In those are some dividers, which I don't use as that. I use those as bone folders. Before that I used the body of my dry embossing tool. I think it it a total waste of money. Spend that $6 on a new stamp or paper. There are just some things I won't waste my money on..............that's one of them. JMO
I use my bone folder to sharpen my creases after using my Scor-pal. Before I bought my bone folder, I used a wood craft stick. When I go to a workshop or card club, I take my craft stick b/c I don't want to take a chance on losing my bond folder.

I love mine. I was also being cheap for several years and finally threw it on a SU order and I regretted waiting that long. I use it everytime I stamp.

Reason: need more coffee
No, it isnt needed for me. I lived with out it for years and I will live with out for several more. I use my trusty hands/fingers Or in bulk needs use whatever is available like a pen.
YES! It's one of the cheapest tools you can get and I use mine on every card I make. So worth the investment. I use it for more than folding- I use it to smooth out rough patches, press down adhesvies, etc.

My "bonefolder" is a little tool also known as a "Pot & Surface Scraper" from Pampered Chef! It does the job perfectly every time....and hey....it was free!

Do you *need* it? No.
Does it give your fold lines a professional finish? Yes.
And, if you get a teflon bone folder? OMG, are those ever slick for creasing your score lines without leaving a shine. I received one as a gift from a friend who raved about 'em, but I stubbornly refused to buy one.

I use my Scor-Pal to score lines, but, I use my teflon bone folder when creasing. Darn thing is spendy, but, IMHO, well worth the price for the results and you'll only ever need one your whole life anyway . . . ;)

Thanks for the enabling, JulieHRR. I haven't been able to stomach the thought of using a bone folder because it is made of an animal's bone, but have been considering the Teflon one. It's higher up on my list now.
I used to use a bone folder all the time... then I upgraded to a Scor-Pal and that is all a stamping gal needs! Love it.. worth every penny I paid for it and more!

I'm in the club of going without for years, but when I finally bought one with a coupon, I wondered why I waited so long! Before I used the smooth side of an acrylic block, which worked fine, but I always worried that it may have ink on it.
Now that teflon one sounds like something I should add to my list...

I have always used the side of my ruler, but it sometimes leaves a mark or roughs up the fold. I'm thinking this is now a must have for my tool collection. Who makes the teflon one?

I dunno who makes it, but I know Ellen carries them in her store:
I honestly never thought a teflon bone folder would make such a difference, but, I won't crease any project with anything else now--it's just so nice for avoiding that undesirable shine you get if you use anything else!

Even though I am now the proud owner of a Scor Pal, I will NOT give up my bone folder - I score the lines with the Scor Pal, but I still crease 'em later with the bone folder. I know I could use the Scor-Pal tool for the crease but I like the way the bone folder feels in my hand better.
A bone scorer is a must for a professional finished look. Even if you use a score-pal or like you still need to finish off the fold with the bone folder. Use a metal ruler not a wooden one for clean straight edges without the bumps and splinters the wooden one will get with use.
I LOVE my bone folder....in fact I have two of them and I have the Scor-Pal and the one that came with it....so I have three!!!! I made cards for about 7 years without one, but I won't be without it again!

This is too funny -ROFL!
I definitely can see a difference when I use my bone folder and when I don't. I am sure that the people I send my cards to don't notice, but it bothers me to not have a nice clean, professional looking fold. I would vote for getting the bone folder.

I, too, use the Pampered Chef scraper for sharp folds. Love it and have even given these for gifts to new stampers. Two of my SILs use the same thing.

I have 2 bone folders and a Scor-Pal, but what I always use to crease my cards is a plastic rub-on tool I found at Mike's (2 in a pack). Sorta hard to describe: round on one end, pointed on the other end. The pointed end is flattened on top with a rounded bottom. The flattened part is where I put my index finger - able to put pressure on the fold for a nice (non-shiny) crease. The odd thing is, this tool doesn't work so well on rub-ons.

If you find that your bone folder leaves a shine (my SU one does) but you don't want to buy another (teflon) one, you can place a piece of thin paper (eg printer paper) over your card & then do your bone folder thang. A bit of a pain, but it works. Have put the teflon folder on my list of 'gots ta get that...eventually' though. ;0)

Oh dear. That sounds too good to be true! I think I'll have to keep an eye out for one of those beauties on my next shopping trip.
I have a "regular" bone folder, but if you're ravin' 'bout that, then I *need* one. ;)
I was going to buy a teflon bone folder until I saw the price, Yowsa! I was able to find a teflon pot scrubber at the gourmet kitchen shop and it works great. One more thing about teflon or bone folders is that do not leave a shiny mark on your paper.
I have several bone folders and when the Scor Pal tool gets worn down you can use a bone folder to do the scores. I just would not be without at least 3...lol
Blessings.
