I received the light box as a Christmas gift probably three years ago now, and I have yet to take it out of the box. I have some brass templates, and lots of good intentions, but I never seem to get around to it. Now I'm debating whether to hang on to it (and force myself to use it) or sell it...
My light box sat in my basement for 4 years, but I pulled it out again! I am making wedding invitations for my son and his fiance. They wanted a simple, clean and classy invitation, and the dry embossing really fills the bill. Her wedding flower is the calla lily, and I was able to find a brass stencil of that flower! When I have the final version finished, I'll post it in my gallery.
I use mine for looking at negatives. I also use it when I want to crop photos to the same size. I flip the photo over on the light box and use my ruler to mark where I want my cuts to go. It helps me to center and crop the photo to exactly the size I need.
If you haven't tried dry embossing, start with adding a corner accent or border to one of your stamped cards. I also like to emboss the flap of an envelope.
I started dry embossing/stenciling years before I got into rubber stamping. There are so many beautiful things you can do.
I use mine for my scrapbooking. I type out my journaling and then print it out and then I use a pen and trace the journaling onto my page. I do this only if I have short journaling as it would be too time consuming if I did a large amount of copying. It looks great because it looks like I hand wrote it even though I really traced it. I haven't done much dry embossing but plan to whenever I get some free time which is hardly ever as I'm always busy with the triplets.
I use mine quite often. Any time I put an insert in a card dry embossing on the insert makes it more elegant. Also if I just have a plain white envelope I will dry emboss on it to match the card. I don't do it all the time but still quite often.

I've had one for maybe 3 years. .. . .Used it maybe a handful of times. However at a recent stamping convention, it was all the rage, and got me motivated to do it again. Now that you can use inks/pastels on your embossed image, it's really quite striking. Try it out again
I bought a light box at a convention two years ago and think I've used it once. I'm just not into embossing with brass stencils right now. It's one of those accessories I forget I have unless I have it in sight. I may just pull it out and see what I can do. Thanks for the reminder.
I got mine with GR points a few years ago.....and I honestly don't know if I have ever used it. I will drag it out when I get to dry embossing in my technique classes though.....
NOPE! Had to have one....now it just sits back there in the closet all by its lonesome!! I tried to leave it at my mom and dads when I got married, but it somehow found its way here and to the back of a different closet!!
Yes, I LOVE dry embossing and use my lightbox often. I don't upload too many samples because it's very difficult to pick up the detail work from a scan, but I do quite a bit of it (and there are a few samples in my gallery). Sometimes I'll color it in, sometimes I leave it white for a more elegant, formal look. And I love incorporating dry embossing and stamping together. Dry embossing is just such a totally different look, and I find that many people are amazed at any cards I give them that are dry embossed; it's just very "impressive" looking, even though it takes so little effort.
I like Kathy's ideas about starting out small (maybe just a few impressions in the background, or a framing of a sentiment or image?) and definitely check out the websites she provided. And I'll add another one:
Last year I just fell in love with dry embossing and had to have all the right equipment and all the supplies etc. I did it a lot and well now almost 12 months later ~ there my light box sits on my shelf collecting dust. I truly think my thing is that I only have a few brass stencils ~ I'll have to get more. I am going to hang on to my light box because about the time I decide to get rid of it ~ then I'll wish I still had it. At least that's how it usually is with me!!!!! ;)
I have the SU light box and love it. I use it all the time for dry embossing. It's so much better than a lot of the cheaper ones. I would recommend it!

This is an awesome idea. I would never have thought of doing this, but you're right - it would definitely have a more elegant look than just a plain insert.
I have done the dry embossing before at stamp camps or parties, and I do like the look of it - hence why I had to have the thing. I think my biggest problem is that I don't have anywhere that I could leave it out permenantly and it just seems like a hassle to take it out for the occasional card. I think I'm just going to have to get past that though, because like someone else mentioned... About the time I get rid of it, I'll decide I really need it.
Like the rest of you, I just had to have it. I still use it periodically, but it mainly just stays in its drawer! I think I also need more brass templates and some good ideas!

I know space can be an issue, but leaving it out has really made a difference in how often I use my lightbox. I keep the stencils in a basket right there with it, along with a stylus. Less time getting prepped means that I'm using it more often.
I agree that small touches here and there are a great way to get going with it. And the idea about embossing on an insert -- GREAT!
I just love my light box. I also dry emboss on inserts and it is so elegant looking. My first brass template was a single long stem rose bud. I have made tons of cards with that and love it. I now own more templates, but my first is stilll my favorite. I think dry embossing always looks elegant.
