I've noticed as I have read and read and read many threads in the past week that new tools come into the spotlight and everyone jumps on them...then the threads die down.
But for newbies....we need to be "in the know". What tools have you used for years that you just can't live without?
I just discovered a stamp positioner, but most of you experienced people already knew about that. ;-)
I always say a good trimmer. Another tool I reach for often is a paper piercer with a foam mat. Next would be ScorPal or other scoring board and a circle/oval cutting system.
I also love my Crop-a-dile and Corner Chompers. Happy Shopping!

A good bone folder; I like one with a little weight to it.
An accurate and reliable paper trimmer.
Sharp scissors.
A good black ink pad. (I like A Muse best for almost everything.)
Chocolate.
Happy crafting!

Rock is dead. Long live paper and scissors!
If you're just starting out, I would say these are the must-haves:
Good paper trimmer
Double-sided adhesive (ATG when and if you can afford one.)
Sharp scissors
Permanent or waterproof black ink
Good set of markers for coloring in images (They don't have to be Copics.)
Something to score your card bases (I used my paper trimmer for years by scoring with a stylus in the groove of the trimmer.)
Stamp cleaner
Glue dots
Ruler, preferably a centering one
Craft (Xacto) knife
Cutting mat
I'm sure I'll think of others, but these are good to start with.

2 pairs of sharp scissors - 1 for paper and 1 for ribbon
guillotine trimmer - I have a tonic
Scor-Pal - I resisted along time but now that I have one I can't do without it
Grand Caliber die cutting machine - Merry Christmas to myself!
Nestabilities - especially scalloped circles and ovals
ATG gun - took some getting used too but everything stays together and its so cheap!
I could go on but those are at the top of my list!
Good trimmer, I have a Tonic and a guillotine trimmer
Scor Pal
Memento ink (if I'm water coloring, I use Palette)
Basic shapes Nestabilities
Bow Easy
Those are my top 5 most used tools.
A paper trimmer that makes STRAIGHT cuts - use those 40% off coupons to get a good one!
Corner rounder punches, large and small
Foam dimensional adhesive (aka pop dots)
Cuttlebug with Nestabilities and lots of embossing folders. I've had problems with the electric cutters, but my Cuttlebug has never failed me!
A self-healing, grid-style craft mat, like this one: helps you line up your layers, postition your clear stamps on acrylic blocks, and protects your work surface.
And not really a tool, but be sure to invest in sturdy cardstock for your cardbases (the cheaper stuff is fine for layers, but you don't want to send out droopy cards that can't stand up by themselves!)
I use my stamp a ma jig more than I thought I would! It is so handy! Hey, I just changed from a rubber obsessor to a matboard maniac! Must be my 200th post!
Definitely could not work without my stamp positioner, also I have 2 clear rulers with a metal edge, with half centimetre grids printed on them- fantastic for matting & layering.
Heat gun- I have the white hair-dryer shaped one which is nice & quiet.
Scalpel & replacement blades.
Scoreboard
Corner rounder punch
Guillotine & paper trimmer with interchangeable blades
