I have the 714 and purchased it from Framing Supplies
It was a bit of a task to learn how to use it, but once I figured it out, I'm doing fine. I now get the new roll of tape out and ready to go BEFORE I remove the old one so I don't screw up and load it wrong. It's a little tricky at times loading a new roll, but baby, I'm SURE happy I don't have to mess with the little tiny stinkin mono tape and have to refill it all the time. I tend to be a manic stamper and do BIG projects all at once, like my Christmas Cards, birthday cards for the entire year, party invites, so I really like the idea of using the ATG 714. I'm almost out of the refill rolls, so I'm glad you started this discussion.
If you are patient and don't mind the learning curve of loading this baby, you'll be VERY, VERY happy you purchased it! My Big Red is ALWAYS out in plain view and other than some Oso Sticky tape I purchase from PennyWisearts.com, I don't really need anything else for my papercrafting needs, unless I'm working with die cut letters...now there's a challenge...If you know what will work with those most effectively, I'm on the prowl to find out. ; )

I do not like mine, the tape gets caught sometimes, does not pull away from the paper without a big clump, and hard to rethread. Sitting in my drawer, the big blue ugly guy! I now use the little pink tape gun with pop in cartridges. way easier!!!!!!!!!
I had that trouble the first time I used it, but I learned to squeeze before I started and let go before I lift up the tape gun. That stopped it completely.
I bought a 700 earlier this year because of all the recommendations in a different thread on here ('What is your best ever crafting purchase?' or something like that). I do use it a lot and find it mostly OK, but lately the glue has been clumping instead of laying smoothly (not much of a problem) and I'm scared of having to re-load a new roll!
Oh, and mine is bright yellow :(. It's my least favourite colour so I'm glad it lives in its box.
I have the 714 (red) and spray painted it using Krylon paint (the kind especially made for plastic). I used painter's tape and Glad 'Press 'n Seal' to cover the areas I didn't want painted. Remove the black spools and cover the opening where you can see the gears (I didn't do too good job there so have to try to remove some of the paint because my gears kinda get 'hung up' sometimes.)
I really like my ATG and am sorry that yours doesn't operate like it should. I am working on a scrapbook and am using the 3M tape made especially for photos. Find the adhesive to be a little stretchy so get gummy lumps at the end of the adhesive I have laid down. When this roll is gone, I'll just use the regular that is acid free tape.

Fiona, I recently posted some videos on my blog about painting my ATG. Maybe they will help you. I also show how to load the tape, and there are others videos on Youtube that are very helpful. You can do it.

So sorry you're having problems. Are you using the 3M tape red or gold? I tried the gold because it's acid free and I hated it. It clumped and was stringy. I went back to the red and haven't had any problems. Currently, I'm using a off-brand from ebay that was highly recommended and I don't care for it either. The paper backing breaks making have to reload in the middle of the roll. As soon as I finish off the off-brand I'm going back to the 3-M red even if it is a bit more expensive. I figurethe ease of use is worth the extra cost.
I'm going to paint the ugly 700. Even if I hate the color - I LOVE the device. How did I ever live without it?
I was at a shoebox swap last weekend when the roll ran out. Flipped it open. Pulled out the old tape. Put in the new one. Snapped it closed. Lost about 30 seconds tops.
Thanks for letting me try yours Billie Dee. I took the plunge today and ordered one. After seeing how easy it was to use I couldn't resist. I thought I may not like it because of the size, but it was great.
