I've been buying ribbon at the craft store by the yard and have found that once I bring it home, I don't know how to store it. I have my spools of ribbon in a plastic shoe box, but all these random pieces are starting to get tangled up. Any suggestions?
I bought some long lure tackle boxes at Bass Pro (they were on clearance). They are perfect for rolling up those "few yards" pieces of ribbon and tucking in a compartment. Each compartment is roughly 1"x4". Mine are clear so I can see into the box to see if there's something I want to use before I even open it up.
I have dowel rods on my stamp pad holder that my DH just built me, but it doesn't hold all my ribbon. I have the ribbon still on rolls in a rolling cart drawer. The loose stuff is either in small plastic baggies or is rolled on this little plastic cards cropper hopper makes. I have some fiber stored on similar cards, also made by cropper hopper.
When I participated in a ribbon swap, I ended up with TONS of ribbon, but no spools. I just cut some pieces of cardboard and wrapped it around them. It's organized, and seems to work well for me.
I went to the dollar store and bought a kitchen towel thing that had 3 rods that rotated. I screwed this onto my wall (I angled it up so the ribbon wouldn't fall off) Also, you can buy the hangers for slacks with 3 or 4 rotating rods. I use the hanger for slacks for my wheels also. Both work great for me.
Good luck!

I purchased a bunch of the Cropper Hopper embellishment boxes. You can roll up the ribbon and have one end stick out from the side of the top and it acts like a dispenser (know what I mean). Plus they're almost clear (more opacque) so you know what you're looking for quickly.
I just saw in another thread, that CTMH is coming out with some kind of ribbon organizer. I think the new catalog is coming out in September (I think).
I bought the Eagle brand "Good To Go" at Michaels. It has 4 trays with no center dowel, so you can pull any spool out easily. It ALSO has slots where so you can leave the ribbon inside and just pull out what you need.

If I collected ribbon by the yard (so far I'm a spool kinda gal), I would put them in snack size ziplocks stored in a box or held together by a binder ring as suggested in this thread.
By the way, I didn't even need to search for the thread started by pinkhedgehog! If you scroll way down to the bottom of this thread, it lists similar threads to the original post for you!
You ladies really are fabulous - you know that? I always get the answers I need here. I went downstairs to get the box of snack-size ziploc bags - and found only one left! What has my husband been doing with them??? But now I'm headed to the dollar store to see if I can find jars - loving all of your ideas and will experiment this summer!
I keep mine in a plastic storage box. I took posterboard and cut rectangles to fit in the box and then used the square punch to cut notches to wind the ribbon on. I had a LOT of spools and condensed it all so it's compact and very easily portable. One card can hold several different ribbons, depending on the width.

You could also wrap the ribbon around those embroidery floss cards, then store in a floss container. I have done some like that, then stored them on the top shelf of the "good to Go" organizer from Michaels....just a suggestion Maggie
I heard that SU has a ribbon organizer coming out in the next mini catty.
I noticed there's a picture of the organizer on page 192 of the new catty! I can't tell if it's 3 pieces or just 1 big piece with 3 sections. But it looks like there's 2 sections that will hold about 15 spools of grograin ribbon each, and the other section looks like it will hold about 6 eyelets/buttons containers.
I'm suprised they are listing it in the new catty and only offering it in a mini.
For my ribbon on spools I created a dispenser. I bought a premade unfinished wood shelf at Michaels and then drilled holes in the wood supports that I could put a steel rod through. It works perfectly for the spools. For loose pieces of ribbon I like the idea of the clear jars, but for me they are just in a drawer right now. I'm anxious to see the SU ribbon thing in the catalogue though!
You might also want to try Magisticalmemories ribbon wrap. Its chipboard and it comes in all sizes. I wrapped all my misc. ribbon on it and then put them in my artbin.
i just droped one of mine on the floor in my craftroom waiting for the fairs to come pick it up! I'm looking forward to seeing the new one comeing out!

I have most of mine in clear ribbon holders I purchased at Target a few summers ago. I love them. Each holder holds about 15-18 rolls of ribbon. I don't use much out and store it in a drawer. I'll replace it with my new ribbon.
I also have about 1 yard wrapped on plastic embroider cards and put them in my Cropper Hopper embellishment carrier. I keep it by my desk though, so I can just grab what I need instead of getting up and cutting a piece each time.
You know what's really cheap and simple for ribbon by the yard or small pieces? Roll each piece around an empty paper towel roll and secure the end with a straight pin. Then you can either stand them all up on a flat surface, or I store mine standing up in one of those tall, clear plastic storage containers with the blue handle top that "snaps" together on each side. You can buy them at Wal-Mart and Target. I have bought a see-through ribbon holder at Michaels that has holes for the ribbon, but it doesn't hold the large, grosgrain ribbon spools. I have heard about the Target ones, but can't find them any more. Oriental Traders website (LOVE THEM!!) offers free shipping over $75. They have all kinds of storage containers. One now is a paper mache ribbon holder with holes that you can pull the ribbon out of. You can cover it with decorator paper, embellish it, put your name or initials on it - a good project for a stamp class! You can also get a catalog from them with only scrapbooking/card making stuff in it. Also a great place to get party favors or simple crafts for birthday parties or Vacation Bible School, for those of you have never been there. You can order by phone or order online.

Here is how I store my ribbon. It is so easy. I am like a kid in a candy store when it comes to ribbon. I like to buy a yard or two if different ones that are cut off of larger spools at the scrapbook store. I love the "wall o' ribbon" there.
I store each cut of ribbon in 2x3 ziploc type baggies. It is easy to look through to see what I want or need. I just cut off what I need, close the baggie and toss it back in the drawer. I like that there aren't loose ends hanging around.
Two more pictures! Hope this helped you with about how to store your ribbon. I like the way I did with mine. I get to see what I exactly have. I sorted them in rainbow color order. I just thought it looked pretty!
I tried it all before I finally broke down and hung a 6 ft piece of gutter in my craft room. I love the gutter but the problem is that once I got it up it was completely full. I have now resorted to storing smaller spools on top of the gutter. Hopefully that will hold me over for awhile longer.

Anyone can be an artist.....you just have to have the desire not to get up early in the morning.
I went all out and bought a Cropper Hopper mini embellishment box and all the little boxes. This idea was on the 2 Peas website... I hope that the picture works - my first time putting a picture in...
Thanks ladies for all the posts and fabulous ideas. I started off with the ziploc bag idea (was thrilled to find adorable Hello Kitty ziploc bags at Target - however, they were regular sandwich size). My husband just happened to come home with a pack of 50 clothespins - a teacher was giving it away at his school. I spent almost two hours wrapping all my ribbon on them (and I still have clothespins to spare!). I tried putting them in jars, but then realized it would take up more space than I have, and since I'm so new to stamping, and spending sooo much money, I'm trying to still "hide" everything from my husband. He's just interested in seeing the final cards!
To LindenFan1: Dang! I even have one of these I use for embellishments I get from Creative Xpress and Oriental Traders. Never even THOUGHT about using this container for ribbon. But isn't it a pain to unroll all everything off the spool into a tight little circle of ribbon?? And how many does it take for a whole spool of SU grosgrain ribbon to fit into--or do you just use it for your ribbon by the yard?

I saw how Martha Stewart stores her ribbon and I copied the concept. I bought two different sizes of Rubbermaid storage jars. I took all of my ribbon off of the spools, sorted them by colors, and put them in the jars. Then I have a jar with "odd" patterns. They really do look pretty on the shelf above my work area, they're just nestled in the jars, you just have to reach in a get what you need.
