I have two different sizes of ribbon storage containers. I bought several plastic ribbon holders from Michaels -- used a coupon, of course. They were $9.95 each, but wtih the coupons the cost is much more acceptable. The larger rolls of ribbon I put into 'snap boxes' (I think that's what they're called) that are specifically for ribbons. I bought those in Joann -- again with coupons, or when they were on sale at 50% off.
I found a lined basket that I liked and cut foam core board to size. I then wrapped my ribbon around the board, one color to a board, and secured with a short stick pin. Works well and I like being able to see all my ribbon at once.
For shorter ribbon I use one of those cropper hoppers, and for my rolls my FIL made me this cool ribbon holder that is on my wall, kind of like the idea of the rain gutters. He likes to build me stuff for my craft room so that was his latest creation!

I actually just made something to store my ribbon in about a week ago, since I too, was getting sick if them unrolling all over the place!
I took one of those dollar-store plastic baskets with holes in the sides, threaded my ribbon onto two dowels and put them side-by-side in the basket with the dowels going out the holes in the short ends. Then, along the long ends, where the ribbons are lined up I threaded them through the holes in the sides so they won't unroll .. voila! < almost > instant ribbon-dispenser. I'm hoping to get this idea published in one of those reader-suggestion sections of a craft mag.. I am also hoping to get my dig. camera emptied onto my computer so I can finally get some pix posted! .. I have a good one of this ribbon dispenser Enjoy !

There are some pics of this in the Gallery! Probably under Stamp Rooms or Stamp areas. The gal had put washers or something on the ends of the dowels so they wouldnt pull thru the openings .
To conserve space I wrap alot of my ribbon around a plain clothes pin. I use the rain gutter system. My husband cut a plastic rain gutter in 4 equal parts and framed it up in a simple square frame. I used to do the dowel thing but ended up with lots of empty spools taking up space because I didnt want to "unthread" the whole dowel to get at the empty spool and I didnt like not being able to bring the whole spool of ribbon right to my work area. I love my new system, its mounted on the wall and I can see it all at a glance. I can pull out whatever I need and have it close at hand on my workspace and just toss it back it into the rain gutter when I'm finished. I organize it by color. I still keep alot of ribbon on spools but for smaller amounts I do the clothes pin wrapping idea.
I use a dowel rod and just have it sitting in hooks on each side and it rolls toward me.. it's mounted on the wall and saves a lot of room. Quick, easy, and cheap.
3-4 yards wrapped around old fashion clothes pins! These then stand upright in some photo boxes I got from Oriental Trading. I have 4 boxes full and two more almost ready. You can get about 45-50 pins in a box.
Works good for me and no wrinkles
I used to use Cropper Hopper Ribbon Cards, but it just cost to much to keep them up! and my ribbon did a bit of a crease close to the card.

I store my stamping supplies in drawers, so for ribbon, I bought one of the drawer dividers (like for socks) to separate the different types of ribbon and different colors.
Hate to give away my secrets, but I got my clothes pins at my local Dollar Tree! My first bag of 50 was $3.99 at ACE Hardware, then I found them 20 for $1 at DT!. You do need to take a bit of fine sandpaper and run over them, I can do over 200 of them in less than a hour!
They work really great!

I have a couple of things I use to store my ribbon in & on.
I use the Middle insert from the Old Style CD cases. Cause I don't need it. and Hate to throw them away.
I use Unmounted Rubber Stamps and store them in the CD cases.
They stack nicely in my Iris Cart I have.
I also have a wall unit that I found at one of our Thrift store for $2.00 It's a Cassette holder. But I use it for Ribbons and small rubber stamps.

The squeezy kind or the straight ones? And how do you keep the ends in?
I use the back of my craft room door. I mounted 6 sets of cafe curtain brackets, and then just cut round doweling to fit. Hold mega rolls of ribbon,
and I can reach and see it all from my 8 foot desktop...works great!
