I purchased my ATG gun because of all the good recommendations on here . I really want to Love this but I cannot get the tape to thread. The little centers on the tape just fall out. Framing supplies says I should call 3M. they offered no help but did tell me that they were getting lots of complains and returns on these.
Anyone know how to get the tape to stay on? My husband and I followed their video but would not work.

Mine also looks very different. I like the look of the one in this picture better. THe business tip sticks out farther, which would make it so much easier to see what you are doing. Good luck.

I had the same problem with mine. It took DH forever to figure it out. He ended up calling the place we ordered it from and spoke to someone there.
Sorry, but it was so long ago I can't remember where I got it.
Try everything you can think of to fix it. The picture that was posted is really good. You will LOVE it and be happy you found out what you were doing wrong. It's probably something small and simple but it's frustrating!
Mine doesn't look like the picture either, and my tape is on the receiving spool differently. It works, but not my favorite tool. I don't like how the tape tears and leaves tails. But that could just be me.

I just received mine last week and ordered one for a friend. We are both having trouble. Finally got them threaded and mine actually worked for a few times and now it seems like the "brakes" don't get applied when we release the trigger so we are getting "tails" AND it wants to keep feeding. KWIM? I'm frustrated but told myself I'd keep playing with it because IF I can get it to work, I know it will be wonderful. Comparing mine to the picture posted here, the spool that takes the paper after using the tape looks different. I wonder if their "improvement" is actually what is causing the problem. How sad, I had to "sneak" this thing home and now it doesn't even want to work. :(
my spool is different as well. This is what I did.
First of all it is really important that you don't cut off any of the excess tape to start the roll. You need it all. Load tape onto first spool with the tail coming under (you know the old arguement, toilet paper under or over?!? )
Over first roller, under and around second roller and extended over the roll of tape heading towards the second spool.
Ok, next on the second spool, there should be some notches and cutouts (if yours is like mine - sorry, no pictures). The notches are like slits. I threaded mine through the slits (down and back out), then turned the spool (clockwise) catching the tail without letting it unthread from the slits. This seems to be what holds it onto the spool. Then put the lock back on it
As for the threads, I have used two different types of tape. The acid free (gold) is by far, better quality and what I will be using when I finish these rolls of regular tape(red/green). A few cents more is worth it.
hth! good luck. I'm heading off to work and won't check back on the thread until this evening...pam

Threaded mine the same way Pammers. It just seems like it doesn't want to stay taunt (my reference to breaks). I also use the acid free tape. I sometimes heard a click when I released the trigger. I think if I don't hear the click, it's not setting the breaks, and that's when it doesn't get a clean "cut"/release. I'll try it some more (hopefully tonight) and see if I can't remedy the situation. My spool doesn't want to stay tight it seems. Either defect or I'm missing something.
Can you tell I don't want to go to work!!! I'm still here!
Do you have the black piece that goes on the second spool as a lock? If so, make sure that you wound it tightly around the second spool as well. I can touch my tape and it is tight but has some give, it by no means is loose.
I sometimes hear a click (which are the gears) and sometimes I don't. Also, when I end, I release the trigger then pull the gun away at about a 45 degree angle.

also, no rolling backwards!!! Even the slightest bit of backwards movement on my gun will result in me having to manually roll the second spool to get it tight again. I hold the trigger with one and and manualy roll the second spool with the other.

I have the 714 from last year...mine has a part that is not pictured here, that may be missing from the ones that are having problems. It is a part that fits into the take up reel (the empty side) to lock it in. When I forget to put it back after reloading, the brakes don't work, the tape gets loose. Give me a minute I will be back with a photo!
OK, I think I uploaded at least one thumbnail...yep, they are there.
Look at the photo of the ATG...the take up spool has the black guard that fits over the spool on the right...this makes mine work correctly, but I do sometimes FORGET it in the reloading process.
Use a glue dot or 2 to replace the white wheel if it is loose. I do not know why my posts keep getting deleted, but I hope you see this. It really does work.
THe mods seem unable to fix this problem so I will probably have to go another route as much as I hate too.
Another route? There is another route? :-) Like a different user ID or something? I'd think you'd have to get approval for something like that, as it's against TOS to have more than one user ID.
can't quite find that blog?
I love my atg and would recommend not giving up Koopdedoo posted awesom pix and how I load mine.
When loading you have to squeeze the trigger to keep it rolling around, you want the lead (the plaid untaped part of the roll) to roll out until the end of the roller that touches the paper when you use it, then release the trigger and wrap it around the used tape spool. Then put on your lock.
some spools may look different because they have an adapter on them to use a different width tape.
clear as mud?
I just got the 714 also. I had problems with the center white plastic core of the tape roll popping out from the first roll that I tried. Is this the problem that you are having? It took me a while to realize that there are little teeth or a gear that the roll must fit into. I wasn't geting the core of the tape roll correctly on the gear. I messed with that first roll of tape several times trying to figure out how to position it correctly and think that this is why the center core of the tape popped out. When I finally figured this out, I couldn't get the core back in the center of the roll, so took a new roll and it worked for me. I am using the regular tape, not the gold. Good luck!
To the Pink Tulle lady--the problem goes ignored even though it has been addressed many times. My tendency is believe that they do not have the skill to fix the problem. I am not the only one who has had this problem.
I'm assuming that I'm the Pink Tulle lady...but I'm confused? What problem?
If you go to the framing supplies website and click on the yellow gun's picture, it will play a demo of how to load the gun. The yellow and red guns are loaded the same way. The written instructions that come with the ATG714 are terrible.
I am sad to hear people say they don't like this! I love mine, and I have had no problems whatsoever with mine, and I have had it for over a year! I am on my 3rd box of adhesives!
Oh, so some of you are pushing the center plastic ring out while trying to load onto the spindle?!
There is a clip (I can't come up with a better description! I'm sure there is a technical word for it!)...OK, the instructions call it a HOOK on the black spindle that you are trying to mount the roll on. And there are 2 small posts that need to fit into the rectangular holes on the white center plastic ring of the tape.
Let me get my camera...
Hard to photograph this! Anyway...the photos show the hook above the spool of tape (you push the hook towards the center to remove the empty ring when done). The rectangular posts would most definitely push out the plastic center of the roll of tape if you are not aware that they are there and you need to line the holes in the white plastic with the black posts.
Thanks for all the Great information. This is the best group ever. I have finally got one tape to stay on. I think I will return the other tapes because the little white disk in the middle will not stay in the tape spool. I hope this will be worth all the work when I finally get the hang of this new tool.
I was having a similar problem (with the takeup roll being loose). It turned out that I did not have the full roll (on the left) "hooked" down under the two little clips. So, now I push gently on the full roll until I hear a click....this means that the white spindle has been hooked onto the gun.
ok now I've been jinxed I just raved about how much I love my atg and it just broke :( the lid broke off, it is still useable but I think i will have to duct tape it shut, oh well it wasn't ever pretty any way!
