Actually I just got this so I'm not that experienced at it. It seems to work well though. I traced some tags that I wanted to layer and they came out great. I have been covetting (sp?) it for quite awhile. So I'm happy with it! Good luck!

Not that I recall. But it's very easy. I used a mechanical pencil, stuck it in the whole in the center of the disk I wanted to use (3 disks sizes to choose from). Then you just butt the disk to the object you want to layer, trace around it, cut it out and vooola you're set.

You need to be good at cutting out things to use the layer ease and be happy with the results. Using layer ease is easy, just as Angela said. My difficulty comes when I go to cut out the images. I just can't get the cut smooth enough for my picky tastes. So layer ease isn't the problem, I am--but it's something to consider for you.

Sell me on buying Layering Ease... Do you like it? How do you use it? Looks kind of complicated to me... I am very curious!
I have one of these from when they first came out. I haven't used it very much though. I don't have the patience for it. I am not a very good salesperson on this product, huh?
You do have to be a good cutter. I thought maybe mine was sloppy because it was new ( I had hopes of it looking better with practice). Now, it's not horrible, but definitely not as clean a cut as you'd get using your trimmer, rotary cutter, coluzzle, die cut. I haven't used it enough to give up on it yet though cause I like the concept.

I really like the layer ease for making mats. They are pretty simple to use.
For those of you who consider yourselves NOT good at cutting, what kind of scissors are using?? I use a pair of itty bitty fiskars with blades that are about 1" long. I had these even before I started stamping. I read in a scrapbooking technique book that these are a "must have" item for people who will be doing a lot of hand cutting. These scissors are great for cutting into and around small areas. I actually enjoy cutting out images. I just thought that maybe you aren't as bad at cutting as you thought... maybe it's just your scissors.
Take care, Brenda
PS: If you want to see an example of something I made recently with layer ease look at the first item in my gallery.
Brenda, thanks. I have been thinking of getting SU!'s paper snips, and see how that goes.
I do have issues with my hands shaking a little when I'm doing fine motor skills. I don't color much because of it, I'll be going along fine and then my hand will spazz a little and I'll be outside the lines. I seem to have inherited this from my dad, who is 80 and healthy as a horse. But you should see his handwriting.

Well, I am not convinced this is for me then... I am a crappy cutter and that was my reasoning behind getting this... maybe sometime I will get it, but not today! Thanks for all the help everyone!
Help! I'm not having trouble with the cutting out--I'm having trouble with the tracing! Any tips. So far I'm disappointed. It looks so cool, I've got to be making this harder than it is.
It is easy but I am lazy so I haven't used it as much as I should. It is like anything else if you use it you will love it and not want to work without it. I have two stamping friends who swear by it. Mine has been used maybe twice.
Use a very light touch. I thought the Layer Ease was so hard to use, but I was putting the "fist of death" to it. Use a soft lead pencil and barely push it against the item you are tracing. It should be very easy and very fast.
As for cutting, did you know that you are supposed to move the paper, not the scissors. That may sound strange if you haven't tried it, but it works like a charm. Of course, if you are doing a straight line, you will move the scissors forward, carefully. But if you are cutting a curve, you open the scissors, place the paper against the blades. Start closing the scissors, but do not curve them around the arc. You hold the scissor position stationary and move the paper through the arc. You will be very surprised how smooth your curves will be with just a little practice.
Here is a link to a card with a butterfly I cut out. I didn't use the layering tool, but you can see the smooth curves on the wings.
I think I'm going to get this tool when I place my next order. I made some cards with All I Have Seen and free handed the layering cut out. It looked okay, but I think it would have looked much better if I would have used the layering eaase tool. It is true, you should move the paper, not the scissors when you cut. It really does work.
another suggestion I heard out there but haven't tried yet it is to get one of the magnet sheets and put that underneath to help you trace better . . .
