I have mine wrapped around Cropper Hopper ribbon cards and in plastic shoe boxes on my shelf, the ribbon that is not long enough to go on cards goes in a tin bucket next to the boxes.
This is what I have. I like it because I can see through the sides of the jar to the exact thing I want, instead of going through bins or boxes which was a pain for me. I'm visual.
To avoid the ribbon from getting tangled, I have it all together in a bundle and knotted in a big knot every 24", or so. Often I snip off an end as I use it, but occasionally I undo a bundle, pull out the end I want and re-knot it. Not a big deal.
Just, for an additional idea, the little jars in front of the ribbon are my colour coded embellishments. I also found that I could not be bothered to go through every bin, box, container or drawer to see my embellishments, so I put them together by colour. Invariably, I look for embellies by colour anyway.
I like both ideas and I got them from other people who have posted their stamp rooms.
I used some mason jars that I had bought for gifts. I sorted by color and love it! I love the idea above of the little jars for embellishments. I may have to get some!

I make little individual bundles of ribbon by wrapping each one around 2 fingers and then I keep them in the plastic containers that the Papertrey stamps come in. It stacks nicely!
I also wrap thin ribbons around empty toilet paper tubes and keep them in a box.

I have the puleeze purse and I really like it. It holds a TON of ribbon and I haven't had any real problem with tangling. It's very convenient.
That being said, if I ever get a "real" craft room, I want to do something like momof2stampers' picture. I just think it looks so cool and I would feel like a kid in a candy store if I had all my pretty ribbons and embellishments in glass jars where I could see them.
I liked the idea of ppl poking holes in baskets and such - but didn't have anything appropriate to use. I did have heavy duty glad freezer zip bags...
Poked holes in them using my papersnips, then loaded 'em up. I have them hanging from my "curtain rod" where my punches live - and they're kinda cute - looks like I have fraggles (you know, the ones from "Rock"...) hanging there....lol...
It works, and I didn't have to go buy anything....
I seen the best blog the other day and now I don't remember where i was looking but she put hers on 2 1/2 by 2 inch cardboard and then wrapped it and put a rubber band around it and put it in those 3 drawer units you can get at Target, Michaels or Joanns. It was the best storage she said that 3 drawers held 400 rolls of ribbon i think with 5 yards.

For all the loose ribbons, I just bought one of these Ribbon Storage Boxesfrom Oriental Trading. Their idea is to use it for spools of ribbon, but it holds a LOT of loose ribbon. I haven't had it very long, but so far the ribbon pulls out quite easily and I haven't had any tangles.
I learned this from someone else and I LOVE it...I store mine by wrapping them around the "round" clothespins and putting them in a "mini milk crate" ( 50 clothes pins $3.50, crate .97 from walmart)
Anything not long enough to wrap around several times, goes in a clear acrylic jar for "display"

I don't have anything beautiful from the outside but what I do is keep all my scrap ribbon in zip lock bags. They are all labelled by color and sit nicely in a wicker basket. All I have to do is pull out the basket and grab the color I need. Since I started doing this I find I always go to the basket first to see if I have a piece of scrap that will work before I cut a new piece.
I just posted how I store my loose ribbon on my blog. I like doing it like this because I don't have to untape any ends or anything to get what I need.

I bought a bunch of little 1" styrofoam balls at H.L.. I stick the ribbon to the ball with a straight pin, then wind it around, finally hooking the end of the ribbon with another straight pin. Then I dump the little balls into a big jar. It looks adorable - kind of like those old rag balls.
I wrap mine around those plastic embroidery floss cards and use a container (I can't think of what you call it but it has the separated areas, I know you all know what I'm talking about!! a floss box?? lol) to store them. They are actually color coordinated. I love using them like this because I can take the box out and have them all at hand.
I have the Puleeze Purse too, but am finding I'm not that fond of it.
First of all, no where did it tell me to keep the ribbon lengths to three yards or shorter, so now a bunch of mine are tangling, and I'm going to need to go through and take some out, cut them, and put them back in. If that doesn't work, then I'm coming back here to find an alternative.
I have mine in 2 big clear glass jars, they look almost like huge fancy glasses.. i would post it in this thread, but I don't know how to do that. I have pics in my gallery tho
What are your dowels attached to (and how?)? I can't tell from the picture.
I just used loops of ribbon to hold up the dowels. So the top dowel is hung off the shelf supports, and the next dowel is hung of the first dowel, and the third is hung off the second. You can just barely see the purple ribbon loops in this close-up photo.

I've done three things. I wasn't going to spend a lot on storing my ribbon so:
longer pieces are wrapped onto dollar store clothes pins and stored in a lovely Walmart glass vase.
shorter pieces are tossed into a "colander with a lid" is the best way I can describe it. Believe it or not, I purchased this at the 99 cent store or Dollar Tree? I can't remember, but it has square type holes all the way around and I just tossed my ribbon in, had it poke out through one of the holes and it is readily available. I have it poked out and organized by color.
those on bolts are stored in a short narrow basket on my bookcase.

I have 9 glass jars (from Target) on a shelf, each with a different color, for loose ribbon. I've never had a problem with tangling, and some are very long. Plus, I love the look of all that wonderful color on a shelf in my craft room!
I store my small pieces of ribbon in some inexpensive rose bowls . I try to put similar colors together. These stack nicely as well and look decorative.

Thanks for the close-up photo. I know my original question was about loose ribbon, but I like this idea for ribbon on the spool. Bonus ideas for me!!
I read on SCS once to get a ribbon holder from Walmart or any craft store when one of the store ones is empty - they will let you have it for free - I'm talking about the cardboard display thing that they have them in on the shelf for sale - - - - this is very easy to find right after Christmas - I got one a couple years ago that has 4 shelves for ribbon and love how much it holds -
Hope I'm describing this well enough.......

Go to to Oriental Trading and search for ribbon storage container. Their's is $9.95. It works on the same principal as other storage bags but is less expensive and containers can be snapped together for increased ribbon storage.

I've been storing my ribbon in all sorts of ways, but one of my favorite and least expensive, is putting it in large Miracle Whip mayonnaise jars, and I make the lids look prettier by covering them with pieces of fabric that I've cut into circles and tie some ribbon around it.
I store a lot of my brads, buttons, primas, etc. in the plastic containers that you get at the supermarket when you buy salads from the deli section. They're transparent, so you can easily see what's inside of them, and they stack on top of each other nicely. Again, it's inexpensive and a great way to recycle the containers.
I'm one of those people who finds it easier to come up with design ideas, and tend to use my embellishments more, when I can see them all in front of me, so I'm quite fond of storage containers that are transparent.
I used my sizzix scalloped tag die and cut tags out of cereal box cardboard and then I wrap the ribbon on the tags and store them in an embroidery floss type storage container from the dollar store. This method works well with 1 yard long to 5 yard long pieces. The really short pieces I put into a jar.
