I just recently got into flap cards and don't yet own any of the magnetic closures a lot of you are using but I do own a coil of the sticky magnetic strip to use to hold my nesties ... so I punched two small magnetic dots out with the larger hole of my COD and THEY work thru 2 layers of paper. Voila - flap card closure!!

what a great idea thanks i dont have any of the basic grey snaps and am sitting here trying to figure out how to make a sample card to show a customer tomorrow
My Dollar Tree had packs of thin magnet sheets. There were either 5 or 8 sheets in a pack (about 3 1/2 X 5 size). I bought about 5 of them. I'll have to try this tip out (i was just going to cut them.....wonder if the CB would work on them. If you want to make a purse looking flap card you could possibly do die-cut little shapes to make the decorative clasp. Hmm.......off to create i have to go!

Dumb question--I have some of those thin magnet sheets that came with advertising on them. They stick fine to the refridgerator, because it is metal. But what do you use on your flap cards or magnetic bookmarks for the magnetic piece to stick to? Am I making any sense? When you put the magnetic piece on the card, what holds it closed?
Okay so I love these ideas... However, I can't say I know exactly what a "flap" card is! I know... I probably know what it is but call it something different. I have got to see some examples... Thanks for the tips... Off to the gallery I go to look up Flap cards!
I have been collecting these magnets from mailings for a while... now I have this use to use them up!

GREAT idea! I've had a flap card done for weeks, with nothing to hold it close. I've been meaning to get some of the magnets, but never did. Now I will just do this! THANKS! Great!
I made little scrapbooks that look like purses for my daughter's birthday party. I've been saving the advertising magnets for a while and was thrilled to be able to use some of them for the purse flap closures. I used two pieces attached with double stick tape so that the magnets hold the purse closed. My magnet pieces were 2" x 1" and 2" x 1.5" to close a booklet of 6 layers of card stock, including the booklet covers.
However, there are several things that I learned about magnet closures with this project.
1) Some of the advertising magnets are stronger than others. I went through my shoebox of them to find the ones that had the strongest attraction. I did this by just putting two together and trying to slide them apart. They all slide, of course, but some held stronger than others. You'll see what I mean about some being stronger than others when you try this with enough of them. Also, the thicker ones were not necessarily the strongest.
2) The magnets seemed to prefer sticking to each other in some positions better than others. I can't remember my physics magnetism lessons, but it seemed like there were bands of positive and negative magnetism maybe. So when I was attaching the magnets to the paper, I attached the first piece (and in my case it was the larger piece) with the double stick tape. Then I placed the second magnet on the first in the position where it wanted to be, added the double stick tape to the second magnet, then closed the flap on top. This resulted in the two magnets being positioned correctly when the flap was closed.

Magnets stick together

Did you pick up from reply #20 that most magnets will stick to each other. Even if you have only the one scrap (advertising) magnet. Cut it in half and you will find that one half will stick to the other half. (If it seems to repel then flip one side over and it should stick together!)
I tried 2 different kinds of magnets but can't get the card flap to stay down. (The magnet was exposed on the underside of the flap and the other side was hidden by thin cardstock.) I did check to see that the 2 magnets sides were 'attracted to each other' but when I stuck them on the card the flap would not stay shut. Use magnets from a sheet (when I bought them, the packages were attracted to each other on the display stand but not on the card) and a roll type. What size did you cut/punch for your use?
I've been toying with the idea of using the thin advertising (dental appointment reminders) magnets to create one of a kind fridge magnets by stamping something pretty/verse then adhering my artwork to the magnet by passing it thru the Xyron....maybe even coating my design with crystal or crackle glaze.

I was at Walmart at lunch and found magnetic "buttons" in the craft section. They are about 3/16" thick and labeled super strong magnetic. I am going to try them. ($2.94 for 4 buttons.) I think I will try the thin magnetic business cards punched into a circle and see if they stick. I'll let you know how it works.
I can't find any site that has the Basic Grey magnets in stock. They were my first choice.

I tried the business card ones and they didn't work, they were fine until I put one layer of designer paper between them and they didn't attract anymore.
I have several of the advertising magnets, and NONE of them stick to each other, regardless of whether I put them front-to-back, front-to-front, back-to-back (whew! Did I name all the possibilities?) or rotating them. I guess I will just have to keep my eye out for some other kind of free or inexpensive magnet. Great idea--just didn't work with what I have!
I bought a strip of magnet that was self adhesive at the Flower Factory. It's for vendors only, at wholesale prices, but others would sell it too. I can punch or Cropodile it into circles easily. I took it to a retreat with me over the weekend and it worked great on my cards.

They didn't work for me either. I guess the ones I tried didn't have a strong enough magnetic force. (Sounds like my love life!)
Just a word of advice. I used xyron scraps (ones large enough to fit the case)and glued them to a CD holder. They did not hold my spellbinders (Nesties in this case) and may not hold a card. The strength is not enough to hold them in place. I know this is kinda off line but It just goes to show all magnets are not made the same:mrgreen:
Great idea. I passed on the recent flap card challenge becuase i didn't have any!

I found a roll of 1/2 inch magnet strips at Joanns for 59 cents. It has sticky tape on one side and magnet on the other.
I just cut little squares to use on my flap card and it worked through one layer of cardstock. I put one piece inside the flap and the other under a piece of pattern paper on the outside front, not inside like the original Wednesday tutorial.
Like others have said, you may have to rotate the strips to get them to attract to each other though. It is not a really firm hold, but just enough to keep the flap closed.

Okay, I tried these magnets from Walmart. They are a little thicker than I would like and are REALLY STROOOONG magnets. They didn't work quite the way I wanted them to. I will keep looking for other choices. I am like the rest of you with the advertising magnets. None of the ones I had were strong enough to attract through a layer of paper and if I put them on the card without a decorative cover, they were ugly and still not strong enough to suit me. Oh well, onward and upward!!

I just ordered from this site last night and they shipped today. They have everytype of magnet available. The chart is very handy listing size, power, etc. It also explains what each type is and does. I am making magic hold bud vases out of 3/8th inch tubing for Mothers day gifts and needed something thin & small but strong to hold the tube to the steel plate through a table cloth. I plan on covering the tubes with pretty paper.
Not to hijack this thread, but I was looking for ideas on how to close a flap card for my Mom's mother's day card. Now I have the idea to use those ugly advertising magnets to make her some pretty fridge magnets with the left over matching cardstock, paper and ribbon.
