I got my MM Slice today with a couple cartridges. Love it! For the most part, everything is great with it. Easy to use, cuts good. As had previously been mentioned, with the smaller shapes (circle, heart), it does distort a bit. It's currently napping (charging) for the second time today. I'm happy with it.
the Slice! I have done nothing but cut cardstock, and not a problem, all good cuts. The smaller shapes are a bit distorted, and I noticed some of the geometric shapes are not "perfect," but truthfully I think that is not the prime use of the machine.
Tonight I cut out letters, stars, frames, scallops (they are not as good as the nesties, but since I don't have nesties at least I have something now), and I love how you can cut out so many sized shapes so quick!
Also, I really liked that I could use almost my entire sheet of paper with very little waste.
given that I have such a small craft area the Slice fits my needs PERFECTLY! it is really an amazing little machine.

I have had my Slice for about a month. So far, it does everything that I expected it to do. I do have the Cricut and use it when I want to cut small shapes and make mutliple cuts. The Slice is great when I just need one shape. It is very easy to use, I barely have to rest my hand on it when cutting. I have cut on Bazzill and have had no problems. I am not familar with SU cardstock, so don't know if it is thicker than that, but Bazzill cuts just fine.
I bought it online...would not recommend that company, but have bought a few discs and the handbag at Hobby Lobby and used the 40% coupon without any problems.
Oh, and I just used their adhesive just once. I wrapped the cutting mat in a piece of waxed paper and I have not had to reapply the adhesive, yet!
Received my slice for Christmas..... can I say........ AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE IT! A little issue with the adhesive that was in the box, it was all dried up, so I couldn't play until yesterday. I have the basic shapes 2 as well. I think my next purchase will be the noteworthy. I love the spatula. Especially if you are using a lighter weight paper. Did I say that i LOVE my slice.
How do you "home" it? Mine has never done that and so far is working great.
If the blade housing is positioned from the corner rather than the side, you just turn the machine off, then back on, then I think, hit select twice. I could be wrong. It's not right in front of me. It is in the directions, though.

My DH got me a Slice for X-mas. His question to me when I asked for it was how many machines do you need, as I have Cricut Expressions, Big Shot nd now the Slice. A girl can never have to many toys.
Does anyone know if Michaels carries the Slice I also got one with dried up adhesive.
I know Hobby Lobby carries it so hopefully there is one near you! I was going to buy some to have on hand when my small tube is gone but wonder the shelf life if some people's have already dried up. Has anybody tried an alternative to the glue they supply?? Alene's Tack it Over and Over?? Spray adhesive??

I've just been using the Tombow repositionable adhesive...I had read that there were many problems with their adhesive ahead of time, so I just went this route!

I contacted MM regarding the adhesive and they found that with the colder weather (around freezing and below) it will ruin the adhesive, depending on how it was shipped. They suggested if you cannot locate a dealer near you, that a repositionable spray adhesive that is water soluable would work fine. They did mention Krylon. I did go a get the MM slice adhesive and it works great! But as a back up I bought the krylon as well. A girl can't take chances. ;)
I've had my Slice for three days now and love it. In Australia, it has only just arrived and I think I was the first buyer as they were still putting it out on the shelf. I bought the Basic 2 and 3 cards and will go back for Noteworthy today.
I have used it constantly over this time and read numerous blogs, forums, etc. A few things I have picked up:
1. I struggled with some similar problems as others with cutting, after adjusting the blade. Lesson - plug it in and home the blade. If you have been fiddling with the position, finger tighten the housing with the little spanner and turn back one quarter turn. Home the blade again.
2. I've tried cutting all different stock i.e. paper, card, transparency, vellum, metallic. They all work, but not with every shape. For detailed flourishes, it seems to like sturdier stock.
3. I've been leaving mine plugged in. Read somewhere, I think on official site, that this was good, but confirmation of this would be comforting.
4. If the card you are using isn't cutting through, you can cut twice. After first cut, don't move machine, just start the cut again. This worked really well on light card for a flourish.
5. Haven't tried it yet, but one suggestion was to create a template so that if you want to position your cut exactly, e.g. to cut out a printed greeting, you can put your template down, line up the message, remove the template and then Slice. This sounds like a real winner. It was in a YouTube video.
Anyway, hoping this helps someone, as I would have loved all these pointers to be available 3 days ago - it's a pity the Making Memories site isn't better in this area. They don't mention anywhere, instruction book or on site, what to do if you get an error message when homing the blade. Their video instructions are aimed at the kinder market I think. Keeping it simple is one thing, but giving us credit for some intelligence would be nice.
The other thing which I think we all would love, would be the ability to create our own images to use. One that springs to mind are all the folded flowers and shapes from templates. That would be a dream to cut those out automatically. Silhouettes of family members - wouldn't that be cool.
Anyway, I do love it. I also have a Cuttlebug and wouldn't want to have to give that up as I love the embossing and I do have a lot of dies. Although I love my Nestabilities, I may not be so obsessive about getting more basic shapes. Some of the shapes on the Noteworthy card look quite similar. I thought the Slice's half inch increments could be too big, but it makes a rather good size difference for matting.
What a great idea about making a template to cut exactly where you want it to be!! Do you have the link to the Youtube video?? Going to have to check that one out!
Go to http://www.whyslice.com and click on How to Videos. Scroll down to Cutting Photos and click on that one. You'll see how to make a template to cut where you want.
Thanks for the link above - I'm sure that wasn't there yesterday. However, the one I had seen is below. The hint about the template is about half way through the snowman project.
I've used mine on 2 different occasions now & I'm thinking of selling it. I like haveing a die cutter and if I sell it, I'll be back to nothing again but I don't like cutting 1 letter at a time. My last cutter was a Sizzix and I had to do the same thing with that. I should get a cricut but the cartridges are pricey...I'm thinking about getting a cuttle bug or a big shot. I don't know....
I just used the above instrucitons on using a template to cut the words out of this picture.. I kinda like it! I cut the word enjoy out of the clouds and sand the switched them around..
Well I just purchased my Slice on Ebay. I hope I didn't make a mistake. I will have to subscribe to this thread and refer to it when it arrives. Thanks for all of the great tips!!
Well, I got my Slice two days ago and nothing is cutting right with it. All of the circles and scallops are lopsided and more like ovals. At first I thought that maybe I hadn't charged it enough so I let it charge overnight, but there still was no change, even when I plugged it in. I changed the tension on the blade then changed the blade altogether and still no improvement. I'm so frustrated with it. I guess I'll have to call Making Memories tomorrow. I hope it's just a lemon and they can either tell me how to fix it or get me another one. I waited almost six weeks for it to be shipped from Joann.com and can't exchange it (they make you reorder it and they don't have it in stock...plus I refuse to wait another 6 weeks for a new one).
Has this happened to anyone? Any quick and easy fixes?
I had this problem when the glue ran out on my glass. After I reapplied it worked just fine.
Got this for Christmas and haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I did watch all the tutorial's on the Slice website, so I have a better idea of the steps involved before starting.

If you get a Cuttlebug or Big Shot you wouldn't be any further ahead. At least with the Slice you can cut out different sizes of letters. Unless you splurge for a Cricut you will be limited to the sizes of dies the companies offer. It can get pretty pricey to buy individual alphabets to get different sizes. JMHO

Java_jenny: I totally agree. I have 2 alphas for my cuttlebug and never use them. It is 1 at a time w/those as well. I may try to sell the alphas. It sounds like you need a cricut.

I think one of the best features of the Slice is the alphabets. I could never bring my self to pay the $150 they are in Australia for an alphabet set to use in my Cuttlebug. I did buy a Cuttlekids alpha, but it's all capitals and no numbers. So for me one of the biggest benefits with the Slice is not only a full alphabet for a fraction of the price, but a number of them and at different sizes and I love having numbers.

I think you both are right. The same thought had crossed my mind. I think the cricut would be better for words & titles - I just wanted the cuttle bug or big shot to do embossed back grounds but that's a little pricey just for embossed backgrounds.
I tried the card that came with the Slice because I read that some of those cards had problems. Mine cut fine, though the flowers are not perfectly symmetrical at the smallest size. That doesn't bother me, though, since real flowers aren't perfect. I can see where it would be a problem if I wanted them to nest perfectly, but I have Nesties for that.
I'm addicted to tools and have other cutting systems, so this wasn't a necessity (as non-crafters define "necessity" ;)). At first I was a little disappointed with the smallest cuts. I figured I didn't have to put up with that and thought I'd return it. But then I realized that my Nesties will take care of the nesting problem and now I'm happy with the Slice.
For the price (especially the price of the cards, which can still be bought with coupons), I think it's a good machine. The fact that it cuts in a few different sizes is such a wonderful thing for a system so small & compact. A single Sizzix alphabet is $75 (with a 50% coupon) and cuts the alphabet in only one size. You can buy 3 (almost 4!) Slice cards (with coupons) and get 3 alphas and a ton of other shapes & words -- in 7 sizes.
And the whole dang system fits in a cute handbag. How neat is that?!
I agree. The pros out weight the cons. I have contacted customer service at MM and they are aware of the issues and are working on them. Hopefully it is an easy fix. MM has great customer service.
hi all ,
i preordered mine and my friend her slice by franticstamper , they where shipped to the netherlands and they where in faster than the dutch company,s who sell them .
they are working fine , i am realy happy with the slice , i din't own a cricut of other machine ... i wait till the slice come out and for me its the number one die cutting machine.
For cardmaking, I've found that the Cuttlebug and/or Sizzix alphas are about the only things that will cut thin letters in such a small size. I'll always keep a few of the die alphas around because I make cards & small craft items and need tiny letters. I also like that I can place the paper exactly where I want on the die so it'll cut the exact part/pattern of the paper I want.
This is how I'm justifying keeping my CB & Sizzix/Sizzlit alpha sets, anyway!
The Slice alphas/design cards are such a good deal, though -- seven sizes plus all the extra shapes for a fraction of the cost of a die alpha! I haven't cut all the alphas at the smallest size, and I assume some letters won't cut well at 1 inch (and 1 inch is too big for some of my needs, anyway), but I still think it's a bargain.
And I'm holding out hope that MM will go back to the intent of the original designers of the Slice and allow us to create our own design cards. I first saw the Slice (I don't think it was called the Slice back then) in a video quite a while ago. Back then, it was being introduced as a machine for which you could either buy design cards OR create and your own designs on SD cards. Then MM bought the machine/rights and now we can't do that.
I hope MM didn't do anything permanent to the machine to disable the ability to use our own designs. I hope it's something we'll be allowed to do in the future without having to buy a new machine. Even if I have to buy the specially-formatted SD cards from MM at a ridiculous price (considering blank ones cost only a few dollars), I'd love to be able to use my Slice the way it was originally intended to be used.
BTW - Many CB alphas are on clearance at my local Michaels. This may mean that Mike's is clearancing them chain-wide. They're $59 right now but may go lower as time goes by.

Has anyone gotten their machine replaced by MM because of the cutting issues? We are in Canada, and ours was bought in the US, and I'm not completely happy with the cutting.

Actually, it cuts all of the letters just fine at 1 inch. However, they aren't the same as the larger letters. Take the A for example. In a 2 inch letter the A is very crisp, but in the 1 inch A the middle is not a triangle, it's an oval. Works for me, though. I agree sometimes you need something smaller, but I'll use other things for that. I cut out the word 'Merry' in the 1 inch size for my Christmas cards, though, and it was lovely!
