I had a brain wave and tried this--and it worked! Maybe someone else has already thought of this, but I haven't seen anything so far, so here goes:
I used a punch (it happened to be of a frog) to punch the shape out of heavy-gauge Mylar (tranparency material would probably work too). I glued it down to another sheet of Mylar using Dimensional Glaze (Crystal Effects would work I'm sure). After it dried, I took the original sheet of Mylar and lined up the punched-out shape with the glued-down shape so they matched exactly. Then I taped the two pieces together along the top edge. Inserted a piece of cardstock between the two layers and ran it through the Cuttlebug (sandwich was as follows: Part A, Part B, 1 piece of cardstock shim, embossing folder plus cardstock, Part C), and presto! The image was transferred to the cardstock.
Other ways to cut the stencil would be to use a Cricut or Wishblade. I have a vinyl cutter and was able to get it to cut the Mylar by making two passes at a high force setting. The problem is, I ended up with a kind of complicated stencil that was difficult to glue. Still working on this...
So, my plan is to write up this process with photos sometime this weekend, if there is interest.
Clever thinking! I can see how it would work since the bought folders are an impression and a reverse impression. I'll have to give this a try when I have some time.
Great idea! I'm always looking for ways to make things myself. I don't have a Cuttlebug but I'm sure others would love to know how to make their own and save $.
You are my HERO!!!!! And, yes, definitely interested in a tutorial!!!! The things we could emboss are now going to be endless.....like stamped images cut out of the mylar....someone else was just 'wishing' to be able to emboss all her stamped images! YOU ARE INDEED A GENIUS!!!! TFS
I don't own a cuttlebug, but I use the embossing folders with my Sizzix w/converter. I would be interested in the instructions to see if this would would work in my Sizzix also.
Thanks!
Wow this sounds so cool! Yes, please share your detailed instructions when you get them done!

Very neat idea! After seeing your photo, I understood what you were getting at. Now to check out my punches and see what would look good embossed! Thanks for the idea!:-D
Wow, Cyndie, genius!! Yesss, I also want your tutorial!!! Please tell us here where you post it so we all can find it. TFS.. you may just have taken SCSer's up yet another step!! My DD has a Sizzex and if we can do this right, it'll surely stretch the Sizzex limitations! Ooooo, I'm sooo excited. Thank you again. God bless, Stormy

Wow, consider it done! Although, as I said, I won't have time to start on it until this weekend. I plan to include all the possible ways of making a stencil, including:
--punch out with punches or die cuts
--hand cut with craft knife
--trace a stamped or hand-drawn image with a stencil cutting (heat) tool
--cut with computer-controlled cutter (eg Cricut, Wishblade, Pazzle, RoboCraft, etc).
I wonder if a Print Gocco (I've got one of those, too. Can you tell I'm a gadget nut?) would also work? Hmmm....
Duh!!! I have both a 'Hot Marx' AND a 'Versa Tool'... neva been outta their boxes.. (I collect tools/gadgets too, lol). One gets hotter than the other. You're mentioning '..with a stencil cutting (heat) tool' reminded me of them. I think one of them does have a stencil cutting tip. This is what happens when old stampers don't have a real life dedicated 'Craft Room'!! I have stuff crammed in closets, cabinets, etc. and outta sight, outta mind here. Hmm.. wonder if I can get taxes done so I can play with them before I have to paint my chairs...

Hi Folks,
Just wanted everyone to know that the tutorial has now been posted, in the Downloads forum, at this location:Forums at Splitcoaststampers
Enjoy!
Cyndie
I tried the link and it said "requested file cannot be found". Hope this can be remedied - I really want to view this tutorial!
Hmmm... You're right, the link didn't work for me either. Unfortunately I cannot edit my post, but if you just go to the Downloads forum, it is a very recent posting titled "Make your own embossing folders." You can't miss it!
Good luck,
Cyndie
TFS!! I must try this. Something I've wanted to do, but time and the mind could never get together to work this out. Glad you had your thinking cap on.
