Have any of you actually punched something heavier than paper? Will it work to punch chipboard to make book covers? I have a comb system right now that won't, so I'd like to know before making the investment.
I am heading for a divorce because of this board. lol You guys are always coming up with neat things. I had just talked my husband into getting me the xyron (which I use like crazy) because I had to have it. Then the prismacolor pencils (which I haven't used yet). I think if I buy another thing my husband will divorce me. We are suppose to be saving to buy a house. hahaha. I am still wanting the sizzix & now this. Oh well. I will just have to see how this can work to his advantage. lol.

Thanks!
I don't think it will punch the chipboard. I'm pretty sure if you check out the link I posted on the FAQ's that the question is answered in there and it says no.
No! No! No! I CANNOT get another item!!!!! I am TRYING to save for a new laptop, after paying for Convention.
STOP TORTURING ME!
Resistance is FUTILE, Jules. I need a laptop. I MUST GO to Convention. And I have a Rubi . . . . granted, it's currently taking up space on my stamping table, pitifully neglected.. . . .but I *have her* for when I need her!
Stop being so freaking responsible! You *need* it!
HEY!!!! When the house is full o' gaseous odors, because the family has been relegated to eating BEANS due to my lack of self-control, SOMEBODY has to take responsibility.
Therefore, because I do indeed wear the pants (and crown) in the family, it falls on me.
AHA! Betcha never considered THAT worse case scenario, did ya'???? ;)
ROFL!

We always sang; Beans, beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot! The more you toot, the better you feel. So let's have beans for every meal!
Oh yes... we like that one too, but for some reason, my boys think the word FART is just SO flipping funny! Toot is good.... I like toot!

OK, Rubicoil experts, could you please explain what the crimper tool is and if it's necessary? I see it priced for $38.00....I can't believe I'm even investigating this...please, somebody, tell me why I think I can afford it, lol??? There must be some experienced rationalizers out there that have thought up EXCELLENT reasons why we NEED this??? Besides the "cool new toy" aspect, I mean?
Betsy,
Did you ever find out about the crimper tool? I was wondering the same thing. I've eyed the Rubicoil before, but I thought it was too expensive. After seeing the prices on some of the sites posted here, I'm beginning to think it's affordable and it's time to take the plunge. I would have so much more money if I would just stay off of this site!

Mine doesn't get here until Monday. Where I bought mine the crimpers were free. If no one answers before I get mine I'll let you know if they are anything more than a pair of pliers
Oh I got mine today and it is awesome!!!! So easy. The directions are only 1 sheet and most of that is pictures. I think the hardest part was getting the durn thing out of the box. It's a heavy sucker. I haven't mastered the crimper-plier thingys yet, but my dh likes 'em. They are different from pliers.
Got a great deal from www.filmsourceinc.com. $169 includes the crimper, machine and $24 worth of your choice of coils. They have plenty to choose from.
Hooray! I have skills! Sweet Rubi skills! Buy it! Gosh!
Here's a pic of what I made within minutes of getting the sweet rubi out of the box:

Okay, you temptresses! I can feel myself caving too, but only because I have bought BOTH the desktop Rollabind punch--neat gadget, but I don't use it--AND a Carl Tozicle comb binder--used three times. I can't get past the fact that comb bindings look cheap. . . So, for what I've spent in the last year trying to AVOID buying this Rubicoil, I could have almost had one. . . Now *that's* frugality! BTW, I said all of that just in case there are still some of you on the fence about getting a lesser tool to do the job. ;)
So far I've just used index cards (both 3x5 and 4x6) and cardstock for the covers. I love using the index cards cuz they have lines on them! My next order of business is to make one with cardboard covered with designer paper and copy paper for a journal. I'm going to use 1/2 a sheet of 8.5 x 11 and turn it tall ways. Boy that's clear as mud, huh?
I just can't get enough of these sweet books!
Here's another one!

Also, since I know I'm making some of these for personal use. When the insides are gone can the coils be re-used? Gotta get the most bang for the buck :0
I have been using about 15-20 index cards and have used the 6 and 8 mm coils.
Judi,
I think you could re-use them. Your project would just have to be a little narrower because you would have to clip the ends of (because of crimping them so the first project wouldn't unwind).
Julie and Kar,
Resistance is Futile. Repeat after me...... I must order a Rubi...... I must order a Rubi........... I must......

I've been dying because I couldn't get back into the forum till just now.
I ended up with a refund instead of having to pay out to Uncle Sam, so I rewarded myself with a long-desired RubiCoil. I ordered it from Laminator Warehouse on Monday & received it Friday. As soon as I took it out of the box, I made a quick booklet out of 3x5 cards. This thing is the coolest tool I've gotten in a while & it is worth the money. I hunted around & the only better deal I've seen referenced was the one from StampinShelly. Hers was $169 including the pliers and $24 worth of coils. I paid $139 plus $18 or $20 for the crimper. I then went to Bonnie's Best Tools (coilconnection) and ordered coils because she offers combination packs. I ordered some of the premium colors (metallics) and they are GORGEOUS.
By the way, the crimper is not a "regular" pair of pliers. It has two prongs on one side and one on the opposite side. I found directions on line at a different site. I will try to include here:
I suggest that you all run right out and buy one of these new toys. Why should I be the only poor stamper on the block!!
Add me to the list... I have held off until soon...LOL SOON I will get mine! I wanted to be sure we could swing it and now that we have a REFUND on its way from my good ole Uncle Sam in DC...I think I will get it. Shelly I was actually thinking I would wait until June and save the shipping money...then I thought...CAN I REALLY WAIT THAT LONG TO JUST SAVE 16.00??? LOL
I have a feeling I will just pay the S&H!!! LOL
Prepare to be assimulated! Resistance is futile. The Rubi-borg will hunt you down! Just wait till I get my paisley stamp this week and coil bind something cute with that!!!
To tide you over, here's another sample. While watching tv this evening I cranked out 12 of these. They are 2.75 x 5. I used copy paper (that I got free from Office Depot when I turned in an old ink cartride) for the insides.
StampinPixie,
Thanks for the terrific directions for the crimper. I can do it now! Hey.... did they name the new pink after you????
Keri,
You could always come over and play with mine whenever you're in Deltona. Personally, I couldn't wait!!!!!!!
Resistance is Futile...... You know you want it.......... lololol

I have decided that the only way to eliminate my pain and agony over the wanting of this item is to BUY ONE.
I used to have access to one of the MACK-DADDY coil binders at my Parents Resource Center in the school district. I could go and coil bind all day long at 20 cents a coil. Was a great deal!! Sometimes my projects were small enough that I could do 2 for the 20 cents. Now I have moved and there is no one in town with a coil binder that I know of. One guy does the combs for a couple bucks each.
So, just wanted Cami, Jenn and Beate to know that yet another SCS has fallen victim to the RUBI-VIRUS. Rest easy, girls...I figure from the discussion on this board that I should have it by the first of next week at the latest. I have a strong feeling that the pain and suffering will all but disappear at that point.
Just a little side note, DH has been working like a dog...weekends, nights and traveling through the week. Then it is turkey season right now and fishing weather.....With all the time he has been gone lately, he didn't bat an eye when I said I wanted to pony up for the RUBI...
So, JulieHRR, the laptop may have to wait....RUBI-VIRUS can only be cured one way. Happy Coiling....

That is right Cami!!! We place all blame on HEATHER!!!!! LOL
Shelly that little yellow pad is soooooo cute!!!!!!! I was making some cards tonight with PAISLEY, in BASIC BROWN on MINT MELODY...all I kept thinking was...this would look sooo COOL as a little note pad.... I will be uploading to my gallery soon!! LOL
I have put in for a large order of various sizes and colors of coils. If any of you are interested in coils of various colors and sizes, sent me an e-mail at [email protected] and I can let you know what I have left. Just so you all don't have to be purchasing 100 of one color and size!
Yippy, mine finally came!!! I can't get over how easy it is to use I had something whipped up in just minutes of gettting it. I love it, love it, love it I can't believe I got through life without it. LOL I think every household should have a RUBI!
